Will I miss out on anything if I can't hack datapads?

I've never been able to hack the first datapad in the game, and I don't think I ever will be able to master hacking.  So, although I loved ME 1 and really want to play ME 2, I don't want to continue if this will cost me later in the game.  On the other hand, if the only consequence is increased medigel consumption, I think I can live with that.  So, what's the scoop?

N7: MSV Strontium Mule: Heavy Skin Weave
Garrus: Eye for an Eye: Sniper Rifle Damage
Jack: Subject Zero: Biotic Damage
Mordin: Old Blood: Heavy Weapon Ammo
Tali: Treason: Geth Shield Strength
Legion: A House Divided: Geth Shield Strength

These upgrades are the ones you get by hacking terminals in Mass Effect 2 that I can remember.

Or just go here

Hope this helps

I'm curious as to why you're having problems with the hacking minigame. Does it scroll too fast for you?

For me, hacking was much harder to figure out than bypassing. You have to find the piece of code that matches the sample piece of code in the upper left section of the display. Each time you match a code, the sample in the upper left changes. Move the cursor around using the arrow keys (on PC) and avoid the big red X's.

That would be the worst part of the problem, yes.

You can get the hacking upgrade in Omega - that doubles the time allowed. Also, always save the game before you try a hack - that allows you to try again.

also don't worry about the time constraints,  just focus on the task at hand.

As other people have already said, the hacking upgrade on Omega should help with the time limit. If the beeping as the time winds down is grating, I'd also suggest hitting the mute so you can concentrate.

Thats weird, I think the hacking in ME2 is far more easier then decrypting in ME1, at least on pc.

Just narrow it down. Like two blue lines in a row, half green lines, etc. Shouldn't be that hard.

...And if you're good enough, you pick out which blocks of text are comments, which are function/method declarations... anyone see any macros in there?

you're not colorblind, by chance? so much of the UI in this game is based on that ugly orange/green scheme that someone cb would find it much harder.

Actually, yeah that minigame might be a real pain for the colourblind. Hell, isn't orange and green just about the worst possible combination for colourblindness?

Im colorblind and i can hack just fine :P Ok i am not 100% colorblind as in seeing things black n white... i had issues first few times, but then i changed the way i looked at the blocks...

Most often i look at the very last line, or block. You have smal lblue line, a bigger one with 2 // infront, small yellow... Thats how i identify them now. I do hate hacking now tho.. been trhough the game like 4 times now and getting VERY tired of having to hack everything

I stopped really paying attention to the lines and saw the thing as an abstract image of colors. Then it was just like any other matching game.

This does help, and I also saved when I first started out.

I have trouble seeing the different colors sometimes.  I started picking out something from the original that I can focus on and looking for that one thing instead of trying to remember the whole picture.  Like large white block of text in the center or two blue lines at the top square shape. Violet on the top right, blank space so on.  I still miss them occasionally but I do have better luck breaking it down rather than trying to focus on the whole thing.

Yeah I go by "ok small purple in top left and orange in bottom right for this box", rather than looking at the lines per se.

Arent there any mods out there (if any mods atall :P) That disable the need for hacking/that other thing

It adds nothing... well never had, but after 1 or 2 playtroughs its just a useless gimick

Same on the 360 for me. I always fail the odd decryption minigame, but I seriously can't remember the last time I've failed an ME2 hack, and I never get the upgrade anymore because it's a waste of cash. But then I've always sucked with QTEs, and that's basically what that decryption minigame is.

OP - it'll get easier. I failed a couple at the beginning too.

Once I figured out how the mini game worked it was a breeze, but for me the first playthrough, it took me FOREVER to figure out how to do it, but now it is really easy, much better than decryption/bypass in ME1

I had problems with it at first too to be honest, but I learned it. The more you play it, the easier it will become, and you will be able to quickly recognize the patterns the way Pacifien said: "I stopped really paying attention to the lines and saw the thing as an abstract image of colors. Then it was just like any other matching game."

Good luck!

it's pattern/shape recognition rather than color matching, really.

i had trouble until i realized that they wanted me to use WASD to move the cursor. :P
