The Collector angle really doesn't work, for Shepard, unless they simply don't require him alive. If they were going to use him as the PCU (Saren)for a new reaper, he might need to be alive, but perhaps not. As for genetic, dead or alive is really moot as long as they have a viable sample to mass produce.
