I finally won Origins, and having downloaded Awakening, started playing with my original character.  I got to the point in Vigil's Keep where Oghren joins you, then killed some darkspawn, and went to go upstairs.

Here's the problem: When confirm that I want to go upstairs, the game just goes to a black screen.  The PS3 activity light flashes for a bit, but eventually it stops, and nothing happens.  Just sitting on a black screen.  Any suggestions?

OK, just to make sure: how long did you let it sit when it hit the black screen? I ran into a couple really prolonged loads like this in Awakening, where it took a couple minutes for anything to happen and I was sure the game had just crashed. And, yes, the activity light was off as well. Since that's an indicator of drive activity (or for the other light, network activity), if it's finished loading data you won't see anything, even though the processor is furiously playing catch-up. Other than that, all I can think of is fiddling with graphics options and whatnot. Probably useless, but it's not like you can fiddle with much else on the PS3 in any game.

hit the PS button on the controller, which will pause the game and take you to the XMB, then hit it again to unpase it and it might be able to load it. try that

Actually, very good idea.  If you can access the XMB, then you know the PS3 isn't totally locked up.

I found that out when the dialogue would drop in Origins that trick worked.

Thanks for the replies!

I actually let the game sit on the black screen for a good 15 minutes or so, with no results. And the PS button doesn't respond, unfortunately - it looks like a full-fledged freeze/crash. Any thoughts?

how many times has this happened to you? and may have to go back to an earlier save than the one you're using now.
