I steal from everyone in the game yet i get only a few silver and the random item every now and them.  Whats broken is that its always telling me "Steal Success!"...but i get no cash or "item recieved".  Ive read tons of people having this issue and the devs havent been able to answer this.

Usually I just get a healing potion.

If I remember correctly, you can't get money by stealing, only items, and only "minor items".

You can definitely pocket a few silver, but my favorite things are gemstones and runes.... Go after people in finery if you can... Haven't yet had stealing say success and give me nothing. Quite often adds another potion or mushroom to the stack though... Could it be you just don't notice 1 more deep mushroom?

You can technically steal "nothing" successfully. It's basically like the person has nothing for you to steal...and you did a steal role and it succeeded..that's all...doesn't have to yield an item....

For me it says 'nothing to steal' if that happens. Higher level characters seem to have more valuable loot and more money, but they're also harder to steal from.

One thing is odd, you can steal from your companions in the camp. stealing is a real time sink in the game and most of the time it doesn't give anything of value.

I stole the quest reward dagger from the master Shaper in Orza. Nothing of note from my other 100 steal attempts, and maybe 1 gold total is all.

I stole a dragonbone crossbow from the vendor in Lothering. I still carry it around.

So is there much chance of stealing anything good?

A dragonbone xbow in Lothering certainly sounds intriguing. What level was your toon at for that?

Pretty sure "Nothing to steal" means you have previously stolen from that person. It is not used for the first successful steal attempt, even if the person really did have nothing to steal.

There are a few decent steals to be had. I think I got an Imperial Crossbow in Lothering from one of the Templars wich is a pretty decent crossbow, perhaps it was from the 'shady' merchant. I stole 3G from and after helping a NPC into a Chantry. I also stole some over 2G from Gregoir at the Circle Tower (it is random, so quick save and load until you get the cash I guess). Also stole a Tiara (gift) from someone in Denerim. Stole a Dog gift from a dog outside the Warden's Keep. And I got a Bad Luck Charm from someone in the bar at Lake Calenhad with the flavor text "This ruby figurine of a chariot is a thiefs worst nightmare, the infamous thief Christoph Filippo stole it from Fairlady Zoe, an Orlesian mage. She cursed it to give him unending misfortune. Even worse, He couldnt get rid of it, noone knows what happened to him, but this figurine is known to find its way into the pockets of thieves who eventually gets whats coming to them."--but have yet to find what it potentially does. Perhaps a random world encounter someplace in my travels, I'll keep a lookout for it (as it sells for nothing regardless).

Overall, I've made plenty of cash and XP from picking pockets. (Some items like crafting ones, you can hand in at the main camp for your allies to recieve XP in return.) Never had Stealing not work (unless it fails (wich has only happened like once or twice and I quicksave before I steal as I don't want Steal failures, hah..)) or the NPC has nothing to steal, in wich case it states on-screen that there was Nothing to steal.

The only 'broken' thing (not really by game design, just by annoyance) for me, is the 10s cooldown on it! I wanna just run through the streets picking pockets left and right, rawr!

What platforms are you guys running it on?On my Xbox360 im getting totally the same problem!I've proof-tested it by ditching every item in my inventory, taken note of my cash, then Steal from the NPC.And we're not talking the odd occasion of "Steal Success" but ZERO GAINS here.Except from Specific NPC's with a pre-set item Steal ie. "The Quartermaster" in Ostagar,im getting waaayy over 50% of my attempts giving me this naff feedback. The next kick in the nargs with this is i've found if you do get a "Steal Success" from an NPC,rather than a "Nothing to Steal", you gotta re-load & attempt again (if your a slightly bonkers perfectionist like myself anyways) as it GUARANTEES 100% that this NPC does indeed have something to steal. At this rate my "Real-Time" played to "Game-Time" played ratio is gonna be insane!
On my PC,i would've expected summat like this.Man i've played n loved all the Bioware games n put up with some pretty annoying glitches on release.I'm gonna so pml if it turns out its only the console versions that has this & not the schizophrenic,halucogenic,pre-menstrual PC version.

Hmm... I have Lilliana on 'enemy any > stea'l, and I have been getting a decent amount of moolah aside from little trinkets (so it isn't broken for me, it tells me nothing to steal when there isn't anything), but I agree there should be some sort of reward for stealing (LOL, only in an RPG), something unique. Ah, I remember the days of Baldurs Gate, where a certain imprisoned mage had a very nifty ring that you could only get from stealing... I shed a tear the first time I succeeded in that...

'Stealing Success' only means you didn't get caught.

I stole from everyone i possibly could my first playthrough.

I don't want to give spoilers so i won't name people, but you can steal 20 gold from one character. You can steal a couple of gifts. You can steal a crossbow, and a dagger. Then you can steal some quest items for a certain quest giver. You also can steal silver/coppers and the odd potion/rune etc.

Overall it wasn't worth the time or effort.

Please don't take this the wrong way,but that just doesn't make any sense at all.By the very definition of the phrase "Steal Success",you (rather your PC) has ""Stolen" something from your target. How can it be a "Success" if after executing my "stealing" skill i gain no loot ,no cash,no NOWT!If you then re-attempt to steal from the same NPC after receiving a "Steal Success" report, you receive 100% of the time "Nothing to Steal".Yet,as i've previously said, the kicker is by receiving a "Steal Success" report & gaining NOTHING,it GUARANTEES 100% that the NPC does indeed have summat to nick........Guv'nor.Cor blimey, feel meself slippin in2 me cockney rogue persona.I'm doin 1 ! !

I have both the PC and the PS3 version of this game, and the stealing seems to work fine on the PC version, but does NOT work on the PS3 version. With the exception of getting a few coppers on every 20th or so successfull steal use. I have NEVER received a single item from stealing in the PS3 version. I have also tried what others have end emptied out everything in my inventory and when im stealing i can confirm that you get NOTHING. And i have tried stealing from just about every NPC (non-combat) in every town/area in the game. what can I say im stubborn like that!

I have a compulsion to steal from everything. I want to buy the big artifacts in the shops, and this helps. I think the cooldown is unnecesary though and just drags things out.

There's a mod for that. Click Here.

I don't like mods. I can only play the game as it was made. Anything else may as well be cheating.

As it is (certainly until you can steal in combat) just a time sink, I wouldn't call it cheating.
