Blood Mages doesn't necessary mean you have an immunity against the calling, avernus experimented a lot on warden blood and the darkspawn taint which means he could have just postponed the calling for about another 200 years or found a way to block it.

Other Warden mages have developed immunity to the calling for example Fiona.

Is what I meant.

He mentions the Calling in his journal, if you read it. He's obviously found some way to circumvent it.

ah yes..."the Calling"..we have dismissed these claims.

it only affects Wardens that aren't needed for plot purposes long-term.

Plot armor provides immunity to the calling.

I'm going to say probably, it does mean that if you let him live and teach you what he knows, you could delay the Calling. There are possibilities that he has survived/resisted the Calling because of the location of the keep and a connection to the Fade, but he seems like a smart guy who can confidently state that he circumvented the Calling and extended his life through totally rad crimes against humanity.

If he's right (I think likely), and you're a Blood Mage, high score! But you have to get over the squick factor. I think there comes a point in every mage's life when they have to ask themselves whether or not they want to use their powers for Good, or for Awesome.

Wow, I love how you put that.

Also, I noticed that he was out of test subjects after around three months. The intervening two centuries spent extending his life via blood magic was hence subject-free, which means he probably had to find some way to manipulate his own blood to extend his life.. Then again manipulating the blood of Grey Wardens was what his research was all about, so messing around with his own was probably perfectly suitable.

Right, say he was a warden (I always kill him at the tower & get Sopphia to close the veil), what implies that he is a blood mage?

He says he uses blood magic and you can ask him about it. Leliana also comments on this if you bring her with you.

I romanced Leliana as a blood mage and she never said anything. But she can tell Avernus is one just by looking at him? Weird.

No, she can't tell just by looking at him.

She can tell because the veil has been breached and she saw those "mystical afterimages" of the past, where Avernus was clearly summoning demons. This was followed shortly by Levi mentioning that the Wardens were summoning demons, and the option for the PC to say that Wardens don't forbid blood magic.

You had plenty of evidence that he was a blood mage before you meet him, and even if you didn't have that, he flat out states that he uses blood magic. In fact, I need to play it again but I think he says that before she chimes in.

I imagine even normal wardens could survive longer with Arvenuse's research, not 100 years as a blood mage but still.

OT: Aisynia it's good to see a fellow Zaeed fan.

You mean the Powers of Blood stuff? Yeah I have a feeling that drinking that potion has some pretty dramatic effects aside from some crappy powers.

Well, crappy for warriors, okay for rogues and awesome for mages :P

And Zaeed is .. well.. sexy.

Okay, so I was revisting Soldier's Peak tonight and this suggest that extending one's life & urges from calling may infact not have anything to do with Blood magic.

I thought blood magic was heavily implied.
