I recently started a Hardcore Sentinel FemShep, and I also recently upgraded my computer's video. I decided to record this playthrough in 1080p for posterity... with my mic on.

Obviously this video series is full of spoilers. It's also full of gameplay tips, anecdotes, and hopefully a laugh or two. I know there are several gameplay walkthroughs on YouTube already, but some of them have dubious video quality and others are incomplete. There are a few good ones though. Why watch this one? It's in 1080p, max quality, it's focused on combat and gameplay, with tips from someone who's played through the game multiple times.

Last summer my BattleForge gameplay walkthroughs were well received, so hopefully people will enjoy this series, too.

The playlist for this video series is here: Mass Effect 2 One Mission at a Time
Latest mission: #23—Ardat Yakshi
I'd be happy to answer any comments or questions here or on YouTube.
Enjoy the videos!

Why do you call it an edurance run???

I should do one of these youtube vids for a speed run. I'm guessing I can beat insanity in under 5 hours.

Because I'm going through the entire game. Also because I'm shamelessly copying Giant Bomb's video walkthrough idea. :)

Hey, I liked your vids. Mind if you share your PC spec and your rendering software/method? 550 megs for 20 mins of 1080p seems incredibly good...

Do you capture at 30fps? Or higher?

Sorry, many questions at once but I'm really interested in the answers to those.

My first try at a speed run was 7 hours and 15 minutes. I know I can take an hour off that, and probably two.

My CPU isn't all that great, couple years old Core 2 Duo E6750 at 2.67 GHz. I'm running Windows 7 x64 with 4 GB of RAM and a couple of Hitachi 7200 RPM terabyte drives. I use onboard sound (SoundMAX, I think) and my video card is a Radeon HD 5770 (XFX model HD-577x-ZNFC, 1 GB DDR5 RAM, no overclock), driving a Samsung Syncmaster P2350 (1920x1080 native).

I use FRAPS to capture at 30 FPS. While I'm recording, the framerate isn't all that great. It varies between 25 and 40 FPS. The video capture loads the system a lot--normally I get solid 60 FPS in ME2 with all the graphics goodies turned on. Also, if you look closely, you can notice some hitches in the video, when FRAPS switches to a new video file it sometimes takes a couple frames to catch up. It's possible that if I captured at 24 FPS it'd be more solid, but YouTube 1080p video is 30 fps.

For editing and rendering the H.264 video, I use Corel VideoStudio Pro X3. I used to use Adobe Premiere Elements, but the latest version (8) kinda sucks. Premiere Elements 8 doesn't support 1080p H.264 (AVC) output, but Video Studio Pro X3 does.

The rendered files are about 2 GB for a half hour of video, and that takes hours to upload to YouTube, depending on the time of day. Episode 3 took 6 hours after 3 multi-hour partial transfers failed... it was a pain. My Comcast upload speed sucks.

Glad you liked 'em. I'm hoping to get up at least one per day, but I'll probably miss one or two days here and there as things come up. It only takes 20-30 minutes to do a mission, but the editing, rendering and uploading is time consuming, and I want to be able to use my computer for other things, too.

Thanks :) I've been rendering in Sony Vegas 8.0 using the WMV9 codec and a decent bitrate (like 10M) but the file size is huge... 1GB for a 10 min movie. I'll have to compare the h.264 with similar bitrate and see whether there's a difference.

Never understood the point of speeding through a game.  Especially a
story based game.  Kinda like fastforwarding through a movie 100 times
doesn't mean you've seen it 100 times...[smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/whistling.png[/smilie]

I don't know, I think a ME2 speedrun would be fun. After you've played through the story a few times, you know it. The gameplay and combat in this game are just as strong as the story, if not stronger, so you could still have a lot of fun even if you skipped most of the dialogue.

Endurance run is more for something that is "hard to do", mass effect 2 is fun to do and never a pain, therefor there is not as much to "endure".

Now mass effect 1, okay that can be endured.

Try doing commentary for 20 hours of gameplay and then say that. :D

Still a lot of fun, though!

#6, Citadel, shopping and meeting Kasumi has been up for a couple days, but I forgot to make a note of it here. I have also finished Kasumi's recruitment mission, and will be uploading that video tonight. TONS of combat in that one, and I used mostly highlights from the early part of the mission to leave some surprises in the DLC.
