It prevents a universal consensus, but that's not exactly a possibility.  There's too much information, undereducation, multiracial and ethnic cultures and backgrounds to operationalize things into policy that satisfies both empirical goals and political feasibility...   That's why a federalized system of local governments is a wonderful thing.  Texas may think Jesus partied with Raptors and cave men, but you're very easily able to relocate to New York State or Vermont or whatever to have a rational scientific education...

And that helps the human species how, exactly?
Individuals are irrelevant.

There has never been a weapon humans have invented that they never used on themselves.
'cos it only takes one itchy trigger finger to spoil everyone's party.

If your'e at all familiar with the Fermi Paradox, it's almost mathematical proof (more so than any religion, anyhow) that interstellar travel is impossible.
And if it's only my opinion that says so, that impossibility is largely due to biological constructs being utter failures at rationality.

Self-interest, family interest, collective efficacy among peer groups, and countrymen/culture fellowship comes before any species-wise mutually beneficial considerations.  It's delusional to expect someone to put the aggregate billions of humans on Earth before their own self, their families, or even their countries.

You're living in the wrong civilization if you think the individual is irrelevant... Individualism is one of the few good things about western civ.

How did this turn into a religious debate? If there are two things no one will ever agree upon, its politics and religion. Please don't attack someone for what they believe.
OT: If that's true how does femshep get so many men?

Ah, the quest for proof. What if I don't feel the need to prove anything? Why should I have to search for empirical proof for something I believe to be regardless? I would never deny anyone else's right to believe in what they want, and wouldn't wish to be told that something so personal to me is wrong based on a lack of evidence.

My, but we could go round in circles with this, and I'm not entirely sure the boards are the place to discuss such matters. Message me if you wish to continue this discussion.

Might I suggest this group? debate group

It's my favorite debate place for all things debatable, Mass Effect or otherwise.

I think certain people's need for proof comes from their personal familiarity with how harsh and cruel the world can be. The concept of a God who does not keep bad things from happening, if you've seen those bad things firsthand, is not just disturbing, it's inexcusable to those people.

They need proof that he exists because the depth and magnitude of his lack of intervention is so great and so terrible it's almost inconceivable he's really there.

Sometimes I look at it from the perspective of a god sim player.
You know those times where you cause a natural disaster, barbarian invasion or godzilla attack just for funzies?

I remember Sim City on the SNES you could call Bowser to come in and destroy a good portion of the city. Good times. Even more so if he got to Nuclear Reactors.

My thanks. I think I'll take you up on that offer.

Just to stick my oar in one last time, I think it's pretty much safe to say that most people would at some point question why such bad things are allowed to happen in the world if a higher being had the means to stop it from happening. The counter-argument I've seen suggested is that it's a choice between a perfect world and freewill, in that our ability for independent thought means that [insert deity of choice] is unable to intefere in the conduct of our lives in this realm without infringing on our freewill. An interesting argument, I feel, but I'll stop there...

Shepard is such a lady's man because 14-year-old boys are just discovering their sexuality, and want to fantasize about being a space captain with lots of hot chicks drooling over them. Poor things are in for a rude awakening when they start interacting with actual girls.

That is what they like to say.

However, since God is often set up as a father figure, I feel it irresponsible and unfair that he should create his children and then abandon them - it would be like my mother saying, "I gave birth to you, now go off into the world and don't expect me to intervene, ever, if something bad happens. Free will means you get no help or protection from me ever."

They always say great power comes with great responsibility, but for some reason God seems to be above that rule. God - who, having the most power, should therefore have the most responsibility.

I know!  As I became an adult I was unsettled by my unrealistic expectation for glorious space adventures.

Indeed, and there is the belief that God is manifest in all that is around us, making the whole thing even more confusing.  I think the freewill thing specifically relates to influencing the way people make decisions. For example, if God stopped a man from shooting someone, the man is robbed of independent thought and effectively becomes a thrall, whereas the guiding hand of a parent doesn't reach into your mind and compel you to obey orders (unless you're related to Jean Grey, I guess...). T'is something that I've not entirely formed an opinion on yet, so it's not necessarily what I believe.

Lol @ Jean Grey.

I think it's just a whole other issue conceptually than it is realistically.

We can sit here and say  it's probably logical that God not interfere in free will, and that bad things happening are just the price we have to pay for that free will he gives us.

But when you're standing in Rwanda and children are screaming in terror as men run around decapitating them like animals suddenly logic and all this free will excuse business really doesn't matter.

I agree that we can postulate theories in relative safety and that it all changes when you are suddenly faced with a situation akin to what you describe. For me though, I wouldn't look up to the heavens and ask 'why?' I'd wonder at what process of reasoning, if any, these men went through to decide that they had the right to butcher fellow human beings, particularly those who were innocent of any crime. And I really should stop gibbering on, lest this thread get derailed any further. My thanks for the conversation.
