In single combat Warden hero vs Loghain I have beaten Loghain down to with in a small fration of his of his life and me with most of my life near full and still he suddenly kills me?????? My character justs stands there while Loghain kills him. I have the feeling That  1) Altaire is suppose to beat him in this battle or 2) I am fighting specified numbers Representing armor type and strength and if they are not high enough then I lose the fight no matter what. This is very frustrating watching my alter ego standing there getting wiped out no matter what I do . Help or some enlightenment  Thank you for any help in this matter. I have completed almost all the quests up to this point.

Um... in all my playthroughs never had that happen before its probably a bug. Look around to see if anyone has this problem.

1) Altaire is suppose to beat him in this battle

No, it doesn't matter who beats him.

Remember, Loghain is a Sword & Shield Warrior. He has Assault and Overpower moves as well as Shield Pummel which can leave you stunned. These combat moves lets him get in a good number of concerted attacks in one fell swoop. So, yes, he can beat you down very quickly if you get stunned or knocked down. As well, he cannot be knocked down and will usually pass any physical checks.

If you're using an S&S yourself, it will be a longer fight. If you're a mage, Cone of Cold will stop him in his tracks and you can wail on him. For Rogues, any means to slow him down or poison him will work. Stealth works too.

Is it just the one hit that kills you? Can you take any hits of his other than this finishing one?

I've beaten him with a: S&S warrior (twice, once with Alistair and once with my Warden), a 2h warrior (my Warden), a DW rogue (Zevran), and a mage (my Warden).

It helps if you've given 1 level of the Poison-making skill to your Warden--I do this with all my melee Wardens, as it allows them to use poisons and weapon coatings. Then you can basically load up on all the coatings you can think of. I'm partial to Concentrated Crow Poison, Quiet Death, and Concentrated Deathroot Extract--all of which stack, and all of which can stun an opponent. Loghain spends more of his time stunned than he does fighting.

If you don't have a previous save available where you can run around looking for a skill book, you can try different runes, although you're more limited in terms of how many you can use. Just try to keep your health up, as if you're stunned, he'll be able to do a lot of damage to you very quickly. He tends to resist stunning moves, but every once in awhile, you can get him with one, so keep trying.

Try Swift Salve. You'll attack more.

Swift Salve, official ointment of Gray Wardens everywhere.

I found Loghain a pushover to be honest; having beaten him easily I was actually worried that if I recruited him he'd be weak. If using a mage, use cone of cold, if using a warrior, use taunt or shield bash, for rogue, I'd use momentum and dirty fighting and if playing an archer, I can't remember the move, but its the arrow that impales the feet making the foot stuck to the ground. Use lots of potions in the fight, and retry the duel, it may be difficult for some and not for others. But once you find something that works for you, go aggro on him and finish him off...FOR FERELDEN!!!

You can win...

Though be mindful that a definition of insanity is doing something repeatedly and expecting a different outcome each time. Maybe try a different tactic... and remember you can use potions.

I have to apologize I was so sure that I didn't make my character stronger or didn't have the rigtht equipment that I started the game over . In many of the games I have played even if you start the game over you could load one of the saves from the fist game. I discovered that in this game your old game is wiped out there are no old game saves. I tried to reload a save from the last game after reading all of the help you all gave me but it was two late. I do thank you all for your help. Next time I will wait. The bright side is since I did most of the quests i should have no trouble getting back to where I was. Thank you all again. Special note to Jax Sparrow I am definitely certified insane .

Huh? Your profile says you're a PC user. Were you doing everything on the one quicksave?

Edit: or did you just not notice that each character you create has his own saves? Come to think of it, I don't think the manual mentions Switch Character.

Did you start over with a new character? All the save games are listed by character. You might just have to change characters to find your Landsmeet save.

What kind of character is it? And what are they equipped with? I've never had trouble with him with rogues or warriors.

Name spelling doesn't matter, he could be playing in a different language for all we know the names change if he's using another language.

Tactic for Warrior, If you have a reaver specialization, Keep him feared and you'll knock him down in a matter of seconds.

The most difficult time i had with him was my Dalish archer, just not enough room to work, but i still managed to get him but i used quite a few potions. Mage, warrior anytype, rogue except for the archer i just whipped him like a naughty child.

The names are set in stone. In every language.
