dunno about the rest of you, but fully completing ME1 felt like a chore. it was so bad that it got to the point where i had to force myself to finish it, even though i ended up hating it. on the other hand, i have finished ME2 6 times completely. game set and match ME2
That's exactly how I felt. I love the fighting system in ME2. It's like Gears of War with super powers. Win/Win

ME1 had a good single story arc and more realistic characters who would talk to you even if you weren't romancing them and wore sensible clothes in combat.
ME2 had lots of short discrete stories that felt very contrived and combat oriented, characters who hardly said anything unless you romanced them and a representation of women designed to please immature men.
So from this rpg fan's point of view ME1>ME2

(Those who read this and think, "hiss, he's one of those pew pew 'SPLOSHUNS gamers," based on the above text should be further educated that I am a comprehensive gamer who, having grown up with a controller in his hands, likes to spend more time enjoying games and less time kvetching about how they're dumbed down and imperfect.
Plus, it's technically my brother's game, so he's the one who has the Cerberus Network access, not me. The free DLC that is coming out ultimately makes little difference to me unless he grabs it first.

Iliked the slow paced, you enjoyed each level and felt like you had to outflank your ennemy to break the stalemate. In ME2 you ar ein a corridor, always and you can run and leap across each fight like an acrobat...javierabegazo wrote...
Talking about ME1 however, I disagree. Combat in ME1 was stale, and slow paced, and not intuitive, animations were, for the most part, klunky. As for replaying ME1 to get varying storylines, those are MUCH more limited in variation than what we've got in ME2.
As for limited variations, You're joking right? In Me1 you can kill off three of your companions, the Council , a race , a whole colony and a bunch of random people. While still completing every single mission.
In Me2 as long as you complete Every mission and do all upgrades every one is safe and noone dies. Plus you had real origins in ME1 where as in ME2 the origins change nothing, no side quest , nothing.
There are many choices to make, yet you still feel far more directed than in ME1.And then there's the combat in ME2, with playing with different evolutions of powers, playing battles with different heavy weapons, and such, then of course, with the suicide mission, and different people to bring, and of course with the greater variation in ME2's plot.
RPG wise Me1 has a ton more replayability than ME2.
On the action side, I wish ME2 had a pinnacle station style DLC so we can jsut play and replay shooter missions for fun. Whereas in Me1 Pinnacle station was a waste since the lack of action wasn't an issue since we had tons of missions to do.

Well, most of us HAVE been playing the jesus out of this game, it's only natural that we'd get tired of it.

Taking Archangel to go recruit Mordin nets you a lot of different dialog than taking Jacob, persay, just as much as taking Zaeed and Grunt to go recruit Archangel nets you interesting conversations, that would NOT be there with any other character.

It sounds like you're just upset at losing upgrades with NG+, which well, so am I.
I beat it on insanity for the second time, and I can say I am done with the game... Kasumi is likely to be the last squad member, and I could care less about random DLC "pfff Liara", i may play it a few more times when ME3 comes out, but I am not a completionist, I play the game until my own experience with it is complete, and I feel like it is...
A few more lines of dialog is not an incentive for me
Then again ME2 was worth the money, but without a multiplayer the replay value drops a LOT.
with nothing else to say I am out

As long as the story is okay and the characters are great, like in ME2, then I am thrilled. In ME, story was a tier up on okay, but the characters were nothing more than a info. kiosk for the most part. ME's characters, IMO, were lifeless and dull aside from a few.
The inventory issues do not bother me. ME2's variety was much better for me and seemed more plentiful. ME1, there was only 1 sniper, 1 AR, etc... and they were the Spectre Weapons. None of the others mattered and same goes with armor. ME2, I have played alot with both pistols, the 3 SMGs, and etc.... and I actually had to decide what was the better sidearm for me or which AR was better for me.
So for me it goes like this...
ME2 cinematics > ME1
Gameplay > ME1
Character depth > ME1, by a huge margin
Story < ME1, not by a lot
Weapons > ME1
Level progression > ME1
Scanning = Mako. Honestley, both are really bad. Forced busy work (scanning) is terrible, but with import characters I can bleed 10-12 Rich planets and not have to worry about it. Mako was just so damn boring. At least Scanning went quick.
Ultimately, ME2 is holding my interest a lot more than ME. IMO, ME2 is a far superior game than ME and each playthrough is fun for ME2. ME got dull after 5-7 and only got the mileage it did for the different builds one could make. It would have got less if I there was a "Retrain Abilities" or "Advanced Training" included into ME.

After beating the game on Insanity, and beating it for the sixth time, I'm starting to stop caring about playing it. I mean I never played a game six times, but I ended up playing the multiplayer. Mass Effect 2 didn't come close to the replayablity of Mass Effect 1. It's more of a pain in the ass to loose all of your upgrades that I worked so hard for at the begining of each palythrough than it is hard. Its not like they couldn't have given us more upgrades and increase the enemies. It just gets old dealing with the same mining for upgrades, opening scenes, and the SAME equipment. Its not that hard to give an extra gun or two at a replay. Mass Effect 1 could be replayed even without DLC, and it seems the Mass Effect 2 its basing its replay value COMPLETLY on their DLC. Until someting else gets released, I'll be playing other games.
I think the replay-value is still extremely high in Mass Effect 2, and more DLC is definitlry on the way. I'll just have to wait until then. Because it hard to keep interested unless your constently waiting for something to be added. But there are rumors of Liara DLC!
Well it´s a singleplayer game. I can´t remember any RPG I could be bothered to play as often as you played ME2.

I beg to differ with you. ME1, at the time it was released, got a write up in the WSJ. The first game review for that outlet, ever... It was widely acclaimed as a substantial improvement over most graphics at that time. To compare ME1 to ME2's graphics is not only unfair it is disrespectful of Bioware's past accomplishments. Indeed, I am shocked that a moderator would write this...
Nevertheless, looking at the OP's original message, With Charity, i.e. unbiased, it does indeed seem he/she has a point. ME2 is a VERY linear game, even dumbed down to the point of boredom on replay #3 for me. This is uncharacteristic for a Bioware title. It wasn't until Icewind Dale was spun off from BGII that we saw the same kind of linear game play emerge. i.e. Bioware didn't completely revamp their game style until the game went to, ahem, excuse the comparison, syndication. I would have expected the ME trilogy to be completed without the major revisions the development team made simply to appeal solely to FPS players. IMHO, too much was removed in the transition from ME1 to ME2 regarding content, immersion, thoughtfulness. In the past I was a loyal follower of the Bioware brand because I knew I could expect a cerebral as well as hack and slash gaming experience. Unfortunately this turn to just hack and slash and forget the thoughtfulness has left me and I am sure others questioning the direction BIOEA has chosen to pursue. Perhaps more effort is involved with the forthcoming StarWars release. Time will tell, but I for one will not preorder the next ME game for these reasons and especially if the moderators on these boards can't keep their opinions to themselves.
