I was re-reading an old issue of EGM where the cover story detailed some of the elements of Biowares' new game Mass Effect (back in Sept. '06) and it was mentioned that the "all-terrain vehicle" would be customizable - you could "'...be driving [your vehicle] on the edges of mountains and over the edges of cliffs, across icy lakes - it could be anything,' says Hudson [ME Project Director].  'That's where some of the modifications come in.'  Since the driving mechanic is completely physics-based, you can give your ATV better grip, more power, better handling, and other special modifications that will help you get to locations that you wouldn't be able to otherwise reach [emphasis added]." (EGM September 2006 p.88).  With this in mind - and knowing that ME came out Nov. 20 - what changed their minds about having this customization feature? Considering you can switch out mods for your weapons and armor, tricking out a vehicle sounds elementary - and probably would've changed some people's minds about the Mako - myself included.

Just some food for thought.

They probably thought, "We spent so much time on combat and story that we don't really need to work on the Mako", hence the crappy driving mechanics and tedious exploration. The only thing I hate about this game is...the MAKO!!!

The mako was awesome, and had they added the ability to customise it further it would have been perfect. Putting on your own paintjob is essential (for the Go Faster red stripes).

The Mako should've had more firepower but it was fine otherwise.

It was better than ME2's tedious scanning.

The Mako deserved the kind of environment layout that you see in ME2 and never see in ME1. Pity the developers didn't realize that.

I had no problems with the stearing at all but the planet exploration with the Mako got old fast. I doupt adding customasation wuld have changed that for me.

If EGM indicated the Mako was going to be customizable/upgradable per info they received from Casey Hudson then my guess is that the ME development team later realized that players would have to spend enough time in the Mako as it was. Making certain areas unreachable without an upgraded Mako would require the player to make a second trip to a planet post-upgrade. Perhaps they realized that would make gameplay more tedious.

This. Personally, I hated every second of the Mako. On most of my games, I skip all the UNC quests because of the Mako. I was so happy that it wasn't in ME2.

However, I think that if they had added upgrades for better handling and stuff, it would have been more interesting. And I wish the planets were more than just the same map with different textures. You could have been put on a water world and the Mako could adapt to allow water-travel. Or something to that effect.

I loved the Mako. I hate to say it, but I actually think its one of the more fun parts of the game. But then again, and this is 100% true, I also enjoy the scanning mini game.

I just wish there were party member comments about my driving from time to time while using the MAKO. I was out in it last night and I can only imagine, with the way I drive, the inside is soaked with vomit.

Mako on the pc was a blast.(I hear the x-box controls were...broken a bit)

Getting that puppy to 1080* down a cliff, land it on its roof and then watch it hop to right itself...

Funniest moment in the game. Then again I gotta kick outta seeing how much punishment it could handle.

The Mako is atrocious. No ammount of customization would have made it better (no, not even red stripes)

Scanning planets for resources was an improvement over hunting those 2 mineral nodes and managing terrain to get to a mummified salarian. I admit I dis liked the Mako. But it made space exploration more tangible.

Finding the best approach angle to a base using terrain to my advantage was fun. I appreciate the ferocity of a thresher maw because of those battles on different worlds. I felt like I was visiting different planets not just a major city or port aka map with multiple transitions.

I appreciate ME much more going back again.

I just guess most people never found out they could snipe with the mako...(doublezoom)

Thats why they dont like it.

There was also nothing wrong with the drive controls.

Wasn't the mechanic Turian on Noveria meant to be able to provide upgrades and repairs to the Mako at one stage?

Yeah, and I liked the Mako too. I didn't have much problems with the driving at all.

I really like the Mako. The only improvement I can think of is a small turbo boost that makes you go faster. Sometimes the Mako is slow as hell :P.

Y'know, I was driving around in the Mako last night and tbh, it would be cool to see a standalone game set in the ME universe all about the Mako (well, A Mako). Maybe about surveying a previously uncharted part of the galaxy, upgrading it (finally) and basically just having a vehicle-based combat game.

See, I only found out about this like last week, on the forums! The sniping made everything so much more bearable. But I still hate the fact that the Mako is expected to be a mountain goat amidst all the high elevation on each planet.

Mako wasnt the problem, the terrain was. Why did they have to put so many montains everywhere ?
