I noticed that on my system scan it said on my ATi HD audio device that the ATI DP Output was not plugged in. What is that? Could that fix the problem? Do I plug into my speakers. The properties state it is running correctly (just not plugged in). Can someone help the computer illiterate girl please?
Could this fix my problem?

Okay, I am dumb when it comes to computers, but it has been driving me crazy that my new computer has been crashing and emitting a high pitch squeal since installing 1.03 patch in both DA:O and DA:A. I have been searching for any help. I have updated my drivers and end user runtimer for the graphics card (I do not even know what these are) and no luck.

It's something that newer model Radeons can do that not evreryone seems to need, yet. I don't use it with my own HD 4850, but I also don't play games in Vista (never paid to have that on a any PC), or in Windows 7.
Are you monitoring your system temperatures, especially the GPU?
Your extraneous noise should be from your normal audio channels, and probably could be fixed by rolling back to patch 1.02A.
But I don't advise a noob to do that.

Nope, this noob won't even try. Thanks. It seems the noise is coming from the computer, not my speakers. I had hoped I was onto something. drat.

My compter worked fine until 1.03. I can not believe Bioware would let this go on so long without a fix. I am afraid to play the game for fear of damage to my computer.

and i really want you to know that this sound thing i believe was the reason my other computer totaly crashed havent been able to get it going again . the sound started happening more and more to the point it would do it at the start screen . without the game running . i think it has something to do with their crappy codeing and missmanagement of not just the memory but also the CPU use/management this game on alot of systems were running at 100% and those were duel core CPU no game i have ever seen has done that . and ive been playing a long time my first game was pong when it came out . i think this game is killing our systems

it has nothing to do with the speakers its most likely a fdirect result of their crap coding mis management of memory and mismanagment of the CPU this game IMO its frying our computers its already fried one of mine the one that was making that same hight pitch noise.

I tend to agree with what you say.
Without intervention, this game appears to devour system resources regardless of actual resource demand.
My heavily overclocked water-cooled CPU, graphics and ram are all stretched to the limit if left unchecked when running DAO - and that can be at the opening screen!!!
I run many demanding games and no other has so much as taxed my system resources.
So you could be correct in saying that this excessive/unnecessary demand can stretch some systems to breaking point.
I currently play DAO without problems but I believe this is because I have managed/limited what resources the game can access.

What your are referring to is reserved for HDMI cables that transmitts audio as well as video to a TV or a monitor with speakers. Provided that you don't have your speakers connected to the graphics card, your computer shouldn't be using it at all. So maybe try updating your other soundcard driver. If your plugging into your mobo io panel at the back then you'll get the driver from the mobo manufacturer.
I have noticed a funny sound glitch with 1.03. For some reason the sound box area seems to have shrunk around npcs. So before this patch I could hear them miles away and their voices faded & grew proportionally to the distance to the PC, now it just seems to distort out like a funny noise.

You could try disabling the sound chip on you Radeon. I can't remember the exact procedure in Vista, but look for the sound option in your control panel. Should be an option saying ATI DP output. Right click and select disable.
That will help eliminate any issues in the unlikely event that it's conflicting with the sound chip on your motherboard.
Are you having sound issues with anything else? If you're not, the culprit is most likely the patch. Are you playing DAO or DAA? If it's DAO, backup the Dragon Age directory in your documents directory, uninstall DA then reinstall it.
Install the 1.02a patch from here:
http://na.llnet.biow...gonAge1.02a.exe
That should let you finish DAO without too many problems - hopefully by then they'll have fixed the 1.03 problems (don't hold your breath though - Bioware isn't the company it used to be now that EA is involved).
