I briefly entertained the idea of getting an ebook reader (Nook or Kindle, whatever) but never gotten that final push to do it. I'll have to see if I can get a hold of those HHGTG radio adaptations though.

@bzombo: I feel you on the reading time thing man. My bad habit of constanly getting new books plus my rather slow reading speed just makes it seem like I never actually have enough time to finish a long series anymore. Fantasy needs more single book tales, something we should really borrow from Sci-fi and the other genres.

since getting my new job in october it opened up reading for me. my last job was such a grind i never left my desk until they told me to go away and never come back. :( luckily, i found a job and i can actually take lunch and not fall way behind. so, every lunch i read what i can. i just read the 6th sword of truth book by goodkind. i had the book for 8 years or whatever since it was published in paperback. just to give an idea how far behind i am. i read hitchhiker's guide.....it made me smile a few times but i didn't see what has caused the hype. i have the hardcover compendium of the whole series, but i'm taking it in small doses with other books in between. i love modesitt, but he seems to be tough for some people to read. not because he's so complex or anything, just because his writing style you will either love it or despise it.

Never really read any Modesitt actually, though he has been on my list for some time. He's written a lot of books so I really should check some of his stuff out. Couldn't get into the Sword of Truth series, just wasn't for me.

I would not suggest starting with The Silmarillion as it can feel pretty tedious. Interesting read in the end, but not really essential to starting LOTR.

I could not stand a job like that. Good thing you found something different.

As for Hitchhikers. I guess it is just one of those things you like the humor or not. I dunno about the hype... maybe since there was recently a movie? For me I got it out of one of those book ordering things we used to get in Middle School. Strictly because the front cover was neat!!

One I finished sometime back was Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. It is more of a fictional biography of himself.

my finding a new job was not by choice. the job used to be fun. great people, great place, etc. things change the last couple years i was there. my boss was one of those backstabber types. got hung out to dry to save his butt. the pay and benefits were great though. now my benefits stink and i make 2/3 of what i used to, but i'm sure that's not very interesting to anyone on here....

anyway, one book i read and enjoyed that i was unsure if i would or not was one of kathy reichs' bones books, which is what the bones tv show (my favorite show) is loosely based on. i was afraid they'd be really bad, but i ended up liking the one i read. if you like csi/bones kinds of stuff, you may like the books too.

So crazy pissed at the main bad guy of the Farseer trilogy (least the one that seems to be in charge of things so far). There are few things I hate more than outright cruelty and stupidity mixed into one. Prince Regal is such a simpering, power hunger idiot that he sees his kingdoms danger (Red Ship Raiders have some unexplained way to pretty much strip you of your soul, and they keep attacking near defenseless towns) as an opportunity to snatch the throne. So much hate. He better get some kind of justice by the end of this thing.

Good book though :P.

You know, if I could recommend you (yeah, all of you) something... There is that Israeli writer called Etgar Keret. I had discovered him some time ago, and... I was just stunned. He writes almost only short stories, but he is very good at it. Leaves you... thinking.

I am a huge fan of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series.  It's killing me having to wait for A Dance With Dragons to release, it has been five years since the last book.  :(

From the Earth to the Moon is sitting on my shelf, brand new, but I didn't get around to reading it yet. Also the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy wins.

Malazan book of the fallen is in a completely different league in the fantasy gemre. And the best part is Steven puts out a book a year. It does keep your brain very busy, but the reward is so worth it.

Some more easy stuff thats pretty good too:

Assassin's trilogy by Robin Hobb. 3 trilogies out in the same world.

The name of the wind by Patrick rothfuss. Only first book done, but very promising.

The first law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie. Bloody, brutal and fun. And different.

Song of ice and fire by george rr martin. They're great books, but damn.. hurry up george.

Aldous Huxley and H.P. Lovecraft, pretty much anything by them is a solid read. Delved into Karen Travis' books quite a few times, Larry Niven is a good sci-fi author as well if you're into REALLY technical and nerdy world exploration novels.

Oh he does.......

There is a character a bit like him in the liveship traders.....only a bit more sympathetic. The forging process is expanded on a bit in the second trilogy........:crying:

i used to like them but.........i dunno.

Amber and Ashes really sucked......felt like it was jumping up and down yelling "LOOK AT ME I AM DARK!"

I am reading The Ghost King by R.A. Salvator and that has almost put me off Forgotten realms altogether.

All in all Dragonlance and Forgotten realms have lost their magic for me.
