Anything else? I know you can just put up what you are reading, but what are your current thoughts on it? Do you suggest it to anyone else?

You know, I read somewhere that about 25% of adults read no books at all last year.

Yeah, it's strange. Not one book...though it's not surprising really given how many things are taking up our time - gaming, internet, longer work hours, TV, etc.

Less TV imo, hate the thing. I didn't have TV for years, finally got it again and I have to say I was better off without. I do like being able to record shows I want to watch though. Hate commercials.

I don't watch as much TV but I'm in-tuned with popular culture enough to understand what people are talking about but only on a superficial level - like I have no idea how Glee is different from Fame.

Everything seems to be recycled anyway - like the tomorrow's Nightmare on Elm Street.  I wasn't sure how I felt about the new appropriation but Jackie Earle Haley as the new Freddy's pretty scary.  I’m sure it’ll evolve into its own thing.  There have been many books that I've been disappointed to see as films - can't think of any at the moment - the mental block must have worked.

Um...sorry to have killed your thread :pinched:

So, back on books...Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn is pretty fantastic if you like old school fantasy tales.  I saw the cartoon when I was really little and came across the book (yellowed and torn) at a used bookstore my first in college.  I still have that copy, though the pages are now dog-eared and much more fragile.  It's a lovely story with a deeper storyline than the film, though Beagle did write the screenplay.

Though the voice acting is awesome - Christopher Lee as King Haggard is perfect and decades before he played Saruman, but he's always played good villains.

Hey What do you guys think about The Mass Effect books? I read them a while ago and uhh I think ME books are great too.The first book "Revelation" is a prequel for the first game.It is about Anderson and his relationship with Saren. The second book "Ascension" prequels the second game and it is about Cerberus and its tests on human biotics mostly.I really liked those books.Ever since I played Knights of the Old Republic I've been obsessed with Bioware and these books really helped me improve my English over the years.

Oh and by the way there is another ME book coming up.It's called Retribution and it will be published by july 27th.In this one The Illusive Man obtains The Reaper Technology and he does his evil thing with it I guess.Whatever I'm so exticed about it but meanwhile I need a book to read.

I was thinking about Elder Scrolls:The Infernal City by Greg Keyes or Star Wars Darth Bane series by Drew Karpyshyn (writer of the ME books)

And I hate TV too.We have a lot of commercials here in Turkey and I found the solution in not watching TV at all.I occasionaly watch shows like Psych and The Mentalist. The Pacific is a current favorite of mine. It's a shame there is only gonna be 10 episodes.

Sorry for writing this much I finished The Calling today and I have nothing else to do :( By the way That Maric guy needs to keep his penis in his pants.Cailan will be mad when he learns how many brothers he had.Oh sorry spoiler that is :P

I read that it was pretty interesting, it wasn't remarkable in any way but I wouldn't say it was bad

Can't wait to be finished with Assassin's Quest. I just got through the long and relatively boring middle section. It has picked up again, but I wanna see this thing finish strong. We'll see I guess.

/bump. I just picked up a book called Age of Ra by James Lovegrove. Judging by the cover and blurb on the back it is military sci-fi plus Egyptian Myth. The Egyptian gods appear, beat the tar out of the other gods and put themselves in charge. Naturally, people fight back. I can't help but feel that this could be terribly awesome or just terrible.

Has anyone else heard of James Lovegrove? Seems like he's a UK sci-fi author (explains why he has only 2 books in the States out of a rather large list), but has anyone read his stuff. I'm curious.

Wow, that sounds a lot like the Stargate Universe, at least on a superficial level. It could work, Stargate was a good movie.

For popcorn books, my latest suggestion is the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. The first book in the series is Her Majesty's Dragon, or something like that. Usually I don't like books about dragons,, because they're kinda dumb, but these actually work. It's not high fantasy, it's actually historical fiction based in the Napoleanic wars. Britain VS Napoleon's empire, except they have dragons along with galleons, cannons, muskets, etc. I personally really like the setting of the late 18th century. And BTW, the series is one of the favorites of Tycho, from Penny Arcade.

For a more series, thoughtful book, I read "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving a few months back. Fantastic book. It's kind of like a slice of life book that meets a dire consequences plot. Like most of Irving's books, it's really hard to describe, but I definately suggest it.

I'm working my way down a list of older books I should've already read, but haven't. Just finished Nineteen Eighty-four. Probably about to start on The Once and Future King. Anyone have any suggestions for classic books everyone should read at some point?

I tried to get into the Temeraire books, but they just didn't work for me. I'll have to check out that John Irving book though.

The Age of Ra (in response to the Stargate comment, though I haven't actually read the book yet) is part of the Pantheon Trilogy. The second book is called The Age of Zues, and it kinda makes you wonder what particular religions gods are gonna be in the third book. Hinduism? Ancient Sumarian? So many options.

Kordras, I've heard that the Gormenghast books by Mervyn Peake are really good (Tolkein era classics I believe), but I haven't yet read them. So I guess I can half recommend them to you since I want to read them, just haven't forked over the cash yet.
