Grey Wardens are supposed to be just that: Grey Wardens. It doesn't matter if you used to be a criminal,  noble, a mage, whatever. Still, the Warden is only one of two Grey Wardens left in all of Ferelden and they and Alistair know very little about what it actually means to be a Warden (and arguably Alistair knows less) so they can play it however they want to and once the Blight is over and they're a hero they can do whatever it is that the want to.

None of my characters ever managed to be selfless enough to remain with the Wardens. Sure, defeaing the Blight was the first priority no matter what but after that...they either never wanted to be a Warden in the first place or else the situation that that drove them to the Warden had resolved itself nicely so, barring a six-month or so stint as Warden-Commander to get the new Order situated, they all went on to bigger and better things and they were certainly never able to really let go of their pasts.

Who actually played a Warden who, despite whatever earlier reluctance they had, was really willing to be an all-out Warden and leave whatever remained of their former life behind forever?

Could never do it frankly at the beginning i hated being forced into becoming a warden but gradually i started to like it. It really gave you a spectre feel you know get the job done no matter what point is like yours my character went back to his roots as a noble.

Last play through my City Elf fought the AD, Alistair died and she named Shianni as Bann for her boon. She remained a Gray Warden.

So did she stay with the Wardens or did she just want nothing more to do with the place that refused to acknowledge that she had been to Orzammar before being a Warden (I couldn't believe the Shaper actually said that), thinks you're an abomination with no ancestors who should have been mercy-killed as a baby, and that still contains people who are suspicious of you because you have an unfortunate tatoo even though you're a Warden?

None of my PC's stayed "wardenish". They treated it as something that had to be done and went on with their lives. If they continued being wardens, well they would fight the darkspawn where they found it but really once they go back to the deeproads and the blight was over what was left to do? None of them wanted to go back into that hellhole (Sticking my head in the car door and slamming it a few times sounds less painful).

You can't really go back. Once you leave your experiences change you in ways you can't begin to understand till you try to go back and see you don't fit there anymore. Rather than going "back" my PC's always move forward with their lives.

Its all anyone can do really.

My Dalish stayed with the Wardens - but she left her clan out of duty too. For her, duty is all-important and once she realized what her job would have to be, she dedicated herself to it even though she missed her clan. She went back long enough to tell her Keeper personally that they had a homeland again, but afterwards stayed with the Wardens.

My HNF would have been, except this pesky thing of falling in love with and marrying a king sort of derailed her. >.> all characters are dedicated to an extent, but none completely so.

My circle mage went off to be a warden with Alistair. My Cousland married him, but wanted to stay a warden as well - I always played my PCs as though being a warden was what they wanted - especially my Cousland because it was either be a warden for her or get married and be a lady.

I'm playing a Dalish at the moment and I think she'll probably want to go back to her clan at the end.

Me, on several characters, I will use my current one as an example.

The Cousland line is down to two people: Me and Fergus. I am a Grey Warden now and nothing I do will change that. As such, it is my duty to stop the blight, which I have done, and am a warrior at heart so I'm always looking for a battle. Warden Commander is perfect, I can continue to serve Ferelden and find all the fights I want.

Fergus, on the other hand, is still alive and returns to Highever. So he can clean the place up and maintain it. He also has better chances of fertility then I do, (due to the taint) so I leave it up to him to continue the line. That doesn't mean I won't check up on him every once in a while, but I cannot simply return to my old life for reasons above.

As a Cousland my HNF is an ardent royalist dedicated to the preservation of the Theirin line and the well being of Ferelden. She is dedicated to stopping the Blight but doesn't always agree with the theory that the ends justify the means.

My CE's like that. She finds the identity of the Grey Wardens empowering, I think, so I'm not sure if it's out of the good and dutiful nature of her heart, but she's the only one who didn't think the job was a pot of ****** at one point or the other.

Let me see...

Cousland is with Leliana. Plush she hates the sneaky Warden ways. She will however temporarily return to her duty if something is threatening someone close to her.

Amell is a selish, womanizing bastard.

Mahariel is back with his clan and Merrill.

Brosca is still busy stealing ****.

Aeducan, in all his insane glory, is just slaughtering the darkspawn somewhere in the Deep Roads for the hell of it.

Tabris is with Zev. Not really a fan of helping humans.

Hell, even Caron. While a Warden-Commander, he still does everything to benefit himself.

So no. Can't say I have any "real" Wardens.

On my first F!Tabris playthrough, I made her Warden-Commander. The second time around, I made her Bann of the Alienage, but I actually think that she'd be relieved when she has to go be a Warden again six months later. As a Warden (The Warden) she's respected by humans, dwarves, and the Dalish--who are normally condescending jerks toward the city elves.

At the same time, many of her own people don't trust her. Some still blame her for Howe's purge and for "getting above herself". Many are uneasy over her relationship with Alistair, and wonder how long the improvement in their lot will last once her human lord gets tired of her. And honestly, Valendrian's shoes aren't a good fit for someone who's answer to almost any problem is "apply Starfang; repeat as necessary".

While she didn't exactly choose it, being a Warden got her out of the Alienage and--though she hates to admit it--out of a marriage she didn't want. All her life, she'd felt trapped; being a Warden was the first time she actually felt like she had any control over her life.

Maybe it's just that my main playthrough is a DN but she's used to more than just respect and has been itching to return to Orzammar since she was exiled and now has Paragonhood and possibly a chance at the throne to look forward to so why would she throw all of that away for a job the Orlesian Wardens are perfectly qualified to do? She still intends to strike at the darkspawn if only to keep her home safe and there are plenty of darkspawn nearby to kill.

I largely felt the same. With the DNM having a son, and can return to life as he knew it with some changes. And he becomes a paragon!
It's like the reasons to live just keep pouring in as the years pass, rather than the opposite.
His identity being fleshed out farther and farther away from just a Warden.

My DN does see being a Warden as an inalienable aspect of himself, but other obligations take far greater precedence.

Plus they really need to take responsiblity for who they put on the throne as Harrowmont's weak and could drop dead at any minute (and needs a successor) and they'd be an idiot to trust Bhelen again.

My mage Crowley saw himself almost exclusively as a Warden. Life in the tower tended to blur together, day after day of instruction. It was effectively his pupal state. He didn't even feel alive until Duncan chose him. A year as a Grey Warden saw him betrayed, hunted, redeemed, fall in love, mature, triumphant, and exalted. A lot of good, a lot of bad, but in the tower his most important decision was whether to read "How to Flavor Your Spirit Balm" or "The Toxicology of Deathroot." He had one friend, two tops if you count First Enchanter Dumbledore.

Being a Warden might suck. But being out there, deciding the fates of kings and demons, that is the only *real* life that he has ever known. Everything else was just static.

I played my young male Cousland, Astin, as a respectful good guy who, after given a speech by his father that all Couslands do their duty, set himself to be a Grey Warden first, and a noble/friend/lover second.

I didn't let Loghain be executed either and instead had him be a Warden with Alistair and Anora on the throne.

Afterwards, rejoined the Wardens to help build the Order back up in the epilogue, because who knows, with enough soldiers and Wardens, maybe one day everyone can get together and mount a massive invasion into the Deep Roads.

My mage didn't exactly leave the Wardens, but after kicking the archdemon in the stones and telling it where to stick its Blight, she decided to go wandering with Alistair and Zevran. And she told Anders that she'd leave.

I ended up playing it that originally she and Alistair were both seriously gung-ho about being Wardens and saving the world For The Good of Ferelden™, but after being faced with the reality of who Wardens are willing to take on and Amell dealt with Warden politics in Amaranthine, they took off for better places.

Funnily enough, most of mine stay as wardens, except my two Couslands (who both married Anora) and my rather naughty blood mage (who became chancellor). None of them have ever travelled or gone in search of Morrigan.
