The only reason my HNM willingly became a Warden was because of his father. From the beginning of origins to the end he matured a lot. After putting his name in history and stopping the Blight he thinks that he has fulfilled his duty both as a Grey Warden and a Cousland.
Although most things turned out well he really disliked being a Grey Warden. He had rebuild Highever with his brother, served in Amaranthine as a Warden Commander and managed to save both Amaranthine and Vigil's Keep despite huge losses. Later he decided his time was up, continues to serve the crown for years until he disappears. I'm hoping he is looking for Morrigan.

He was glad to leave the wardens but still misses many people he had left.

Only one of my PC's did this.  It was the one and only time that Alistair killed the AD.  At the time I had no idea I could leave him at the gate.  I had thought that I could overrule Alistair on this just like my male PC's did but no, the jerk just wouldn't have that, took the decision right out of my hands.
At the Landsmeet I had Alistair King and I was to rule beside him, then had the talk with Riordan about how the AD had to die, I said I'd take the finale blow, refused Morrigan's ritual, took Alistair with me to kill the AD n damn he broadsided me with that damn kiss and took off before I could stop him.
My PC was so devistated, so heartbroken, so she did the only thing she knew Alistair would of wanted her to do.  Continue fighting the DS.
I was going to play her in Awakenings sometime but ah that ending must of been to much, I accidently deleted it lmao.

My HNM never really bought the idea that he should abandon everything to only be Grey Warden from then on. He was forced against his will and only accepted because of his duty to his family. At heart he is still Cousland first.

My mage did leave her former life behind, but she wanted to put as much distance from the tower as possible. I'm not putting her through Awakening as I doubt she'd have any interest in being Warden Commander of Amaranthine.

My mages usually do.

They hated living at the circle tower and being a Grey Warden gives them freedom. It also allows for some true magical research without chantry oversight (they get along great with Avernus). Usually take the option to become to Teyrn of Gwaren too.

Magic ruling over man? Yes :D

I suppose fighting the darkspawn and being a Warden is something they care about, but is also a means to an ends. definitely a new life though..

A mage risen from obscurity to be the Hero of Ferelden, Teyrna of Gwaren and Arlessa of Amaranthine, all the while furthering research into tainted blood magic.

Oh hell yes.

I almost always choose to stay a Grey Warden. Once you've completed the joining, being a GW is not who you are, but what you are. This is seems to be the most logical thing to me. However, there is always a more compelling secondary motivation.

For my Dwarf Commoner it was first time in her life she was respected and respected herself. She felt she owed Duncan a debt for giving her the chance to be better than she was in Dustown. Staying with the Grey was the obvious choice for her.

For my CE, for the first time in her life she had choices and authority. All of this came from the Grey. She's not about to give that up just to be another"knife ear".

For my HN it was a matter of duty. It was the only time her family ever asked her to put duty first in her life. She wasn't about to let them down.

For my DN, it was the first time in her life she had a choice. Her noble life was all about duty and fulfilling that duty. The Grey allowed her a freedom she could never have in Orzamar.

Grey Wardens are supposed to be just that: Grey Wardens. It doesn't matter if you used to be a criminal,  noble, a mage, whatever. Still, the Warden is only one of two Grey Wardens left in all of Ferelden and they and Alistair know very little about what it actually means to be a Warden (and arguably Alistair knows less) so they can play it however they want to and once the Blight is over and they're a hero they can do whatever it is that the want to.

None of my characters ever managed to be selfless enough to remain with the Wardens. Sure, defeaing the Blight was the first priority no matter what but after that...they either never wanted to be a Warden in the first place or else the situation that that drove them to the Warden had resolved itself nicely so, barring a six-month or so stint as Warden-Commander to get the new Order situated, they alll went on to bigger and better things and they were certainly never able to really let go of their pasts.

Who actually played a Warden who, despite whatever earlier reluctance they had, was really willing to be an all-out Warden and leave whatever remained of their former life behind forever?

Lynneth granted the Dalish land and went back to her clan.  /shrug

Most of my characters were never actively seeking to become Wardens in the first place, and the more they find out about the questionable deeds committed by the order, the less they actually want to stay there. Let's take my personal canon character, Tristan.

A HN, he only became a Warden because it was his father's dying command that he do his duty, and it also bought him a chance for revenge against Howe. But throughout the main story, he became best friends with Alistair and took Zevran as a lover. By the time the Landsmeet rolled around, he'd set Al up as king. After the Archdemon died, he wasn't about to leave his friend's side. So he stayed on with Al as Chancellor, with Zevran remaining too. He'd done his duty as far as his father was concerned. Now he could go onto politics and the business of being a noble, albeit in a different way than his previous life had been conducted.

About the only characters I can RP as wanting to stay in the Wardens are my mages of questionable moral fiber, mostly because their power is so restricted outside the Wardens. Everyone else has too many reasons to want to leave once the AD is dead.

Commanding respect, admiration, and fear across a nation? No longer living under the whims of noble lords who can purge your home with barest excuse? Able to show everyone, shem and elf alike, what some thin-boned knife-ear is capable of? Empowering his people more than he ever could before while being some simple pauper (and thief) from the Alienage? Pffft! It may not have been his choice, but becoming a Grey Warden was the best damn thing to ever happen to my City Elf, and he’s not leaving.

See, my character takes the whole "serve for life" thing seriously; it doesn't matter that the Archdemon is dead and the blight is over; you're a Grey Warden till the taint takes you

none of my wardens have stayed with the wardens (my Mage goes after Morrigan,My Dwarf Noble returns to Orzammar,my Human Noble Married Anora, and My City Elf goes on a journey to explore the world) but I might make my current playthrough (Dalish Elf) stay with the wardens because frankly why would he want to go back to being a Dalish elf and plus he would provide an example to little dalish elf children lol

Why? Did they feel it was their duty, did they think no one else could rebuild the Wardens, did their old life suck, did what happen in their Origin convince them they wanted nothing more to do with wherever they came from, did they fail to identify with their people anymore during their homecoming treaty? Some combination of all of these?

They realised they've changed, grown away from their previous life. So, those of my Wardens who don't make the US embrace their new lives as Wardens.

I played my mage as never having had reluctance to join.  I also see her as a fully committed Grey Warden, although that hardly means she burned her bridges with everyone from her "old life" (ie. Irving).

Sylveria stayed a warden and even convinced Zevran to help train the next generation.

For all of her daydreams of adventured as she grew up among the city elves, trained as a warrior by her mother, she never thought she would actually live out such childish fantasies but instead resolved to be happy as best she could.

Now, well the reality is much darker and drearier than the reality but it's an important duty that must be upheld and it's where she fits. Her skills make her at home on the battlefield and her truthful but elegant words gives her a weapon when the blade suits the situation ill. A natural leader whose words and actions can shape or save a nation... well where else would she be than defending it?

My HNM - Thaelon - didnt want to become a Warden first. Not that he thought it was a great honor, but in the heat of the moment, the Cousland line came first and vengeance against Howe. He didnt know if Howe had something set up for Fergus, and if Fergus died at Ostagar it would be up to him to carry the line.

But after defeating the Blight, he was reunited with his brother and he was relieved to find that he was alive. With Fergus becoming the Teryn then and having a better chance of making an heir. Thaelon put his best friend Alistair on his throne hardened and alone, and then embraced his duty as a Warden. But after the events of Awakening, he decided to seek out his love Morrigan and his child, so he traveled east into Orlais...

But at times he did wish he could've remained a noble alongside with his brother in his home, and to have a....normal wife and family. But duty comes first for him.

How dire is the need for Wardens? Obviously during Origins they're the only hope Fereden has and during Awakening they need to help finish the clean-up from the Blight. After that, however, no matter what you do as far as the Architect is concerned the darkspawn retreat from the surface. That means that the Wardens just need to be established in Ferelden again and then there's nothing really pressing that needs to be done until the next Blight which could very well be centuries away (or might never occur if the Architect lives and can be trusted/has any idea what he's doing). Are the Wardens going to start leading expeditions to the Deep Roads to try to help the dwarves/understand darkspawn better/actually do something between Blights? If not then it seems like a really dull life and being the Warden-Commander basically means building up an army of people who have to give up a great deal that aren't really needed for anything.

I will start off with my two "canonical" Wardens:

-Arthas Cousland: For now, doing his duty as a Warden and as a Cousland have entertwined, but he did the DR, which I guess is not a very Warden thing to do. But he does respect what the Wardens represent. And he is pragmatic enough to act like one.

-Arcturus Cousland (the slightly more canonical): More individualistic. Still does his duty as a Warden and Cousland, when they do not compeltely oppose his own personal interests. Respects the Wardens however and shares their pragmatism.

The other 3:

- Alim (Elf mage): perhaps the most devoted Warden character I made (in theory). Still, he remained sympathetic to the mages. In practise, the guy was a moral absolutist. So he might have problems with Warden ethics.

- Salazar (human mage): he doesn't give a **** and if it was up to him, he would have never been a Warden. Hardcore individualist that one.

- Thaine Aeducan: Being a Warden is just instrumental. His personal ambitions (like becoming the chancellor for a weak unhardened king) was his primary motivations. In addition for securing the interests of the Dwarves.

I guess it's almost impossible to play a hardcore Warden. It's like Loghain said, the past remains with us (paraphrase).
My Orlesian Warden in Awakening was hardcore Warden, but that's because I have no idea about his origins.

Insofar as I've been able to infer, there are always some issues with darkspawn- random bands that occasionally attack the surface. I'm guessing some Wardens occasionally traipse into the Deep Roads before their Calling to help keep the problem in check. And I imagine that a Warden who isn't on active duty is allowed to live their own lives.

I suppose they could go down to the Deep Roads although the dwarf origins made me think the presence of a GW like Duncan was a bit of a rarity as he said he was their specifically to check to see if there was a Blight and because there was all this ceremony just because he'd arrived (not to mention he claimed not to know much about dwarven ways when the DC is surprised he's being so respectful).

I didn't really get the impression that darkspawn were a big problem on the surface until shortly before the beginning of Origins as every non-dwarf origin gets the option to say that darkspawn were just a dwarven problem and many people had thought the darkspawn were extinct because they hadn't been a problem for 400 years. Not to mention the Wardens up at Weisshaupt clearly had nothing better to do than get involved with politics.

My Dwarf noble was all too happy to shed his former life after settleing things with Bhelen in Orzammar.

Seriously. Older brother hated him, younger brother betrayed him, and his father left him for dead. It doesn't get much worse. Korto Aeducan was rather thrilled to be able to forget about all the political bullcrap in Orzammar and focus on the blight.

Matthew Cousland, which I'm current playing as left his life as a human noble because he felt that being a noble didn't suit him anymore, He can't get use to the noble parties and duties anymore and left in search for his child conceived by Morrigan leaving behind both the Wardens and Nobles in hopes of living a drifter's life.

Seeing this through the eyes of my main character, Astin, he is bothered. I don't see the sense of, once defeating your enemy, you let them go to regroup or recuperate their losses and than come back another time, just boggles the mind if you ask me.

It seems to me that those highest in the ladder are not so concerned with the darkspawn to the point that they'd go to means to raise up an army and invade the Deep Roads with their Dwarven allies. Easier said than done I know, but seriously, I think the Darkspawn should have been wiped out centuries ago if people actually made some extra effort to take the fight into the Deep Roads after a Blight when darkspawn are scattered and in disarray. Even if most nations aren't willing to send troops, I'm sure the Grey Wardens could have made do with just the Dwarves, especially when they had golems, to reclaim most of what the Dwarves lost.

Just my thoughts, but what I see about the Wardens leading the Order in the Anderfels seem to be neglecting their true duty of killing Darkspawn and the Order could use a change in leadership.
