The point, of course, is to finish the game as quickly as possible, which merely means finishing the missions as quickly as possible and taking the shortest route when choosing the missions. No editing files/hacking. You can arrange your weapons/powers/assign skill points and such at the start of a mission before the clock starts. If you want to restart, you have to do a "restart mission" and not reload from the autosave even if that autosave is at the start of the mission( most times the autosave is actually not right at the beginning but, further into the game)

So far I'm trying with vanguard, though I suspect an infiltrator might be able to finish more quickly. Vanguard won't be anything to write home about right away, but they got a lot of tricks up their sleave for mid/late game. Estimated entire run completion time currently under 4 hours.

Lazarus 3 mins 22 seconds

Freedom's hope 4 mins 3 seconds(+ 1 min 15 seconds end mission "talk")

Mordin recruit  4 minutes 54 seconds.

Jack recruitment 3 minutes 2 seconds. add 1 min for intro stuff.

Kasumi loyalty 16 minutes 32 seconds(+2 minutes chatter before/after, 10 mins is "pre-mission stuff)

Zaeed's Loyalty  3 minutes 5 seconds.

Grunt's recruitment 6 minutes 30 seconds

Garrus's recruitment 12 minutes 30 seconds(+ something like 2 mins for intro stuff)

Horizon 7 minutes (I uploaded a better quality version )

I'll fraps the one(s) that seem the most ridiculous to people. Mordin under 5 mins usually makes people go WTF?? Haha.

Boy, and I thought "can't get a lock" was annoying before ever even thinking of a speedrun. Grrrrr.

Isn't it amazing how easily your name can be mistaken for "gayness"?

Paging doctor Freud.

Hmm. tried FRAPs. Frame rates are so low that some doors won't even open. Seems to slow down my overall playing speed by about 20%, and I even turned the reso all the way down to 800x600. (I get 35-40 gameplay FPS at 1920x1080, so it's not like I have a crappy system or something. I tried doing Mordins but the door to his lab never opens with fraps running.

Here's some tips:

1) Set affinity of Fraps to different cores than the ones ME2 is using. Example: If ME2 uses core 2 & 3 of your CPU, set Fraps to use 1 & 4. Depends on what processor you're using.

2) Record to a secondary hard drive if possible. Set Fraps to store the movies to a hard drive different than the one the game and your operating system are running from.

3) Set the Fraps frame rate to 30 and lock the frame rate.

4) Turn off all unnecessary background processes.

5) If you're still not getting good FPS, set Fraps to record half-size instead of full size. Performance should increase significantly.

Hope this helped.

Doesn't seem to be working out. I can get it to run much better about 90% of the time with the lock feature, but then every minute or two of play I get a huge spike where my FPS drops down to 1-5 for 4-5 seconds, instantly killing me, esentially.

We don't all have quad core CPUs, btw.

That was the model of a dual-core with hyper-threading :) For Quad Core it would go core 0 to 7, making the virtual cores 8 instead of 4. The huge spike that you get once in a while is Fraps starting another video file. Defragment your hard drive, make some more space and it won't lag you that much.

Here is the middle part of it. In order to do it, I had to use my system backup drive, which only has around 1 gig memory to spare, so I broke it into three, when I saw the first one was close to a gig itself =x geebus, now i know why i dont mess with 'em.

Gratz, in your part 2 video you fired a grand total of 1 shot :) When we talk about speed runs on these boards, it means kill -every- enemy as fast as you can without skipping fights. I don't really see the point of just running around and skipping the combat... Whatever floats your boat, though.

Guess you never read The Art of War, eh?

Might want to brush up on your gamer vernacular, too, cause a speedrun means get it done as fast as possible, not kill everything you see. That's a fragfest.

Rut-roh, I did kasumi's in 6 and a half minutes. (about 10 minutes of "pre-mission"-- you know what im talking about if you played it) but technically mission stuff. Cue someone crying about the DLC not being worth it.

It really begs the qustion if the locust is worth the ~20 or so minutes(load/travel time) it will take to get on a full speedrun. Very interesting question to ponder.

Hm, I think I'd like to join in this challenge--it'll be a nice break from doing complete walkthroughs of every mission. You're right about Vanguard probably being fastest, though it would be interesting to try all the different classes and see what you could do. Even with a jumbo shrimp. :o

What the hell? Why would you want to rush through Mass Effect 2? This is just lame.

No, it's not lame, it's another way to enjoy the game.

I've done five full playthroughs, and I'm doing another now and recording it for posterity. I think I've pretty much covered every corner of the story at this point. The combat is still fresh, though.

Why would you want to play an imaginary game comprised of ones and zeroes?

I think better guidelines are in order for speed run timing. For consistency, the timing should start from the beginning of a "Restart Mission" load, after the loading animation has finished, and it should end at the first frame of the "Mission Complete" screen. Otherwise, we really won't be comparing the same thing. I was able to do what I think was vhatever's 3:22 time on Lazarus Station, but that's only if I stop timing when I open the door for Miranda. Maybe an extra second or two to skip through all that dialogue.

If we don't go from Restart Mission to Mission Complete, the timings really aren't very meaningful. Since it should take the same amount of time to skip all dialogue, the times should be comparable even accounting for dialogue. Yeah, it's a pain to sit there and bang the space bar, but that's the price you pay... :)

I'll try to get some youtube vids up tonight.
