Does the 64bit version have any compatibility problems regarding driver support or do all the vista 64bit drivers work on 7?M_arc wrote...
As stated above I'm a computer science student and my university has a MSDN account,
so I've been enjoying the 32-bit version op my laptop and 64-bit on my pc for some time now yes
for free off course
What Vista can do, WIndows 7 can do. The only problems you might encounter are the usuals: that of not present drivers for some devices, but I'm sure that'll be fixed in the future.

Most vista drivers work. I haven't had any drivers issue with the rc 7100 x64 . Will see on monday but I don't think there should be any issues for me with the retail either.

If you don't need the extra features of Pro, don't spend the extra cash.
Microsoft was offering a student deal for any premium or professional full retail 32/64 for $30 usd
This won't be some chessy upgrade disc as you might think, the representive on the phone reassured me its the full install retail disc not the upgrade.
The deal was hinted on their website, which now seems to have been taken off. However if i remember correctly the deal ends january 1st. If that is the case for you and every college student, then your window of opportunity maybe closing especially since they removed the hint at their deal from their site.
I called their number a while back and spoke to a representive and ordered over the phone.
requirements are that you must have a .edu address that is on their list to qualify
There are two licences that i know of oem and retail and iirc they differ on how many machines you can install your copy or ie change parts out of your machine.
They were offering the full retail of home and professional, im a good guy and figured i pipe in and let you know.
i called 1-877-MY-MS-STORE which is listed on the upper right corner of the page i linked
$300 dollars
or
$30
you choose
heres a quote for the price on newegg

Check the license agreement on that, as I'm pretty sure you're obligated to uninstall the OS once you're no longer a student. So there is a catch on that deal.

I begin to think perhaps I'm on crack. I'm sure I read that from a Microsoft source, but I can't find it now. So perhaps I'm wrong. Still, as I said, I'm sure I read it. But yes, you're correct, you wouldn't be forced to uninstall it.Sword For Hire wrote...

For all other people (from Europe) I suggest buying a system builder version.
Who need a quick install guide or free phone support by MS?

They learned the hard way with Vista that an OS should work at launchdate, and so they did with W7.
I have yet to find something that doesn't work, and I'm using the retail version for over a month now.

a bit offtopic, but our university also has msdnaa and it's not tied to computer sciences, every student can use it (i'm studying law atm). I just wanted to say thanks schwinni for the info, i never knew you could use this software also after finishing university!

Okay just to confirm, it seems there is a potential error with DA since I am crashing so much I have lost track since installing Windows 7, this is a clean install from XPSP3. I tried xp mode but its still the same. Man, did I just waste $300.00 out of the drain?
Well, I'm hoping you didn't just buy it to make DA run smoother. Too bad it's not working for you. I run Win7 Pro 64-bit and everything is fine.
