The problem with famous name people voicing games is that they can be less convincing because they are so well known in their other role.
I would put Marina Sirtis in this category as Benezia in ME1. I'm not saying she wasn't good. What I am saying is her role as Deanna Troy kept popping into my head which was distracting.
I'd be interested to know to what extent Bioware sees famous VAs as an asset to the game beyound be very good VAs. I presume EA views their fame as a marketing advantage.
I ask the question because if they aren't actively used to sell the game is there any point in paying them their undoubtably higher fees over equally talented, but unknown, VAs?
I have to agree with you in part about actors lending their voices to a project. For example, the movie
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was troublesome, because I recognized Ming-Na, Alec Baldwin, and Donald Sutherland. The only character I was able to disconnect from and enjoy was James Woods' villain. Using popular voices is a double-edged sword in that if you advertise the project based on the talent and less on the collaboration of work. Take the Pixar movies; they promote the story and characters as a priority. The trailers for
UP,
The Incredibles, and
Cars are void of credit sequence naming the actors, unlike the animation projects of Dreamworks (e.g. Shrek, Madagascar).
In my mind, that's both a PR and consumer problem. The folks at EA/Bioware should hold off on releasing the cast information as close as possible to the release of the next game. With both Mass Effect 1 and 2, I didn't learn about the voice talent until a month before street date. I like trying to recognize different voice actors in video games but refuse to go further. I don't want to compare the performance of Cree Summer (Tiny Toon Adventures - Elmyra) and Steve Blum (Cowboy Bebop - Spike) to the other roles they have played in video games (e.g. Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Origins).
EA has to sell the game based on the fame of its voice actors; that's just good business. In a fair world though, they should give props to people like Cree Summer and Steve Blum because they do 2 or 3+ roles each.
