Saving and Loading save game information

It seems logical that all of the information in a savegame (.das) file MUST be passed from the game when you save.

And that all of the information in the savegame MUST be loaded when you load the game.

What functions are used to do this? I have gone thru much of the toolset and online documentation and I'm not sure. Is there a function or set of functions which pull the info from the the savegame and put it into memory? Are there functions that save it?

The reason: I've found I can edit many things in the savegame and then load the game and have the changes there. Many of those changes, however, I haven't been able to duplicate with scripts. For those changes, if I could intercept either the load or the save, I could change those settings without having to use the toolset. This would be useful in creating addons for those who do not understand the toolset.

I welcome any information or ideas.
