Mass Effect doesn't have to end with Mass Effect 3. This could branch out into all sorts of spin off games, with Shepard being mentioned in the background of some of them.
Perhaps they should make 2 really good cgi endings for Mass Effect 3. One for those who want to see Shepard live, and those that want to see him die.

I can see Shephard and Garrus travelling the galaxy and fighting crime in a "Lethal Weapon" kind of scenario. It would make a great game.

To say that there is only one way to have a heroic ending shows that you really need to crack a book and have some different strories presentedto you.

This. There's no reason that Shepard can't survive and go on to live peacefully after what he/she's gone through for the sake the galaxy. The "tragic sacrifice" is cliché and irritating to me.AntiChri5 wrote...
Bull****.

What this ultimately boils down to is Bioware giving us the final call. You want to see Shepard die? I don't. Considering one of Mass Effect's core elements is choice, there's no reason we shouldn't both get what we want, especially since this is the big finale. I, personally, would feel shafted if I was forced to watch Shepard die after getting to decide his/her fate in the second game. How are you going to give me the decision in ME2, but short change me in ME3?
Honestly, I'd be very surprised to see a fixed ending in ME3.

Exactly. Shepard's death could simply be part of a few outcomes, but there's many more where he/she lives.rastakore wrote...
It should be an alternative ending. There should be various endings with big repercurions, an ending where Sheppards LI sacrificies for the greater good, an ending where Sheppard's and his/her LI doesn't sacrificie but a lot of innocent people die(or a fleet?) dies and en ending where all fails and the reapers win.
I want to see a gamut of outcomes; from everyone survives to Shepard taking on Saren's role and decimating the galaxy. Shepard being killed (by the Alliance, Cereberus, the Shadow Broker, the Reapers or Morinth) or sacrificing his/her life to save someone (either their LI or civilisiation) could be anywhere in between.

Shepard going out in a blaze of glory would be apotheosic but there are many people that are looking forward for him/her to have a happy ending so it wouldn't be fair to them.

A lot of games/films have ended with the heroes death, its not hugely original. And I'm not sure it's better. Fallout 3, for example, forced me into a radiation chamber, even though there was my mutant ally who was immune to radiation STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO ME! Saying "this is your sacrifice, you must do this." Why? Forcing someone to commit suicide doesnt seem to me to be the best ending.
I expect that, just like Shepherd could survive or not in ME2, I expect that same choice in ME3. In fact, I expect a full range of endings for everyone based on your decisions throughout the trilogy.

Just because he is a hero, doesn't mean he cannot enjoy a pint and nurse wiping his arse in his older years. My uncle was a hero during WW2, and now he is 80+. He sits there enjoying his horse racing on tv, and you know what? He's still the same hero who risked his life on a daily basis all those years back.
I think even though Shepard has been screwed by the Alliance and Cerberus. He is still a soldier at heart, and a proud one at that. He would be perfect to train the new recruits and make them the best force in the galaxy. There will always be wars in a persons lifetime, I am sure Shepard won't get too bored after Mass Effect 3.
