Shepard must die at the end of ME3. (He/She) is too big of a hero. The first human specter , the savior of the cidadel and the galaxy.  destroyer of the collectors. Shepard has to die at the end of the series. the only way to have a hero like that to go out. in a blaze of glory, NOT finishing (his/her) military career, settling down, retirerment, then aging into a senior citzen with (his/her) LI. NOOOO!!!! SHEPARD MUST DIE!!! (and not like a **** either) its the only way the game can end. 1 life for trillions.

I can see what the OP is saying, but Shepard doesn't really have to die.

Mass Effect doesn't have to end with Mass Effect 3. This could branch out into all sorts of spin off games, with Shepard being mentioned in the background of some of them.

Perhaps they should make 2 really good cgi endings for Mass Effect 3. One for those who want to see Shepard live, and those that want to see him die.

I can see Shephard and Garrus travelling the galaxy and fighting crime in a "Lethal Weapon" kind of scenario. It would make a great game.

Bull****.

To say that there is only one way to have a heroic ending shows that you really need to crack a book and have some different strories presentedto you.

Well, they've already said that Shepard's story ends at the end of ME3. Wether he/she permanently dies or not, something has to happen.

That's kinda silly to force a stereotypical ending. IMHO there ain't nothing wrong with saving the galaxy and carving out a bit of hapiness for yourself at the end. That being said. This is Mass Effect and this is Bioware. They'll give us both options, those that want to die can die and those that want to live can. Totally calling this one, you wait an' see.

This. There's no reason that Shepard can't survive and go on to live peacefully after what he/she's gone through for the sake the galaxy. The "tragic sacrifice" is cliché and irritating to me.

What this ultimately boils down to is Bioware giving us the final call. You want to see Shepard die? I don't. Considering one of Mass Effect's core elements is choice, there's no reason we shouldn't both get what we want, especially since this is the big finale. I, personally, would feel shafted if I was forced to watch Shepard die after getting to decide his/her fate in the second  game. How are you going to give me the decision in ME2, but short change me in ME3?

Honestly, I'd be very surprised to see a fixed ending in ME3.

It should be an alternative ending. There should be various endings with big repercurions, an ending where Sheppards LI sacrificies for the greater good, an ending where Sheppard's and his/her LI doesn't sacrificie but a lot of innocent people die(or a fleet?) dies and en ending where all fails and the reapers win.

Exactly. Shepard's death could simply be part of a few outcomes, but there's many more where he/she lives.

I want to see a gamut of outcomes; from everyone survives to Shepard  taking on Saren's role and decimating the galaxy. Shepard being killed (by the Alliance, Cereberus, the Shadow Broker, the Reapers or Morinth) or sacrificing his/her life to save someone (either their LI or civilisiation) could be anywhere in between.

I'm pretty much sure that it'll be up to the player to decide Shepard's ultimate fate. Just as it should be the player who decides what happens with Shepard afterwards. I think the stupidest thing BioWare could do, is provide an official or canonical ending and announce what Shepard's retirement plans are. I don't want to know that stuff. I want to make my own choice at the end of ME3 and I want my imagination to decide what Shepard's gonna do next. Whether it's going to the beach and get a tan, or breaking the Hanar siege on the Citadel, killing Blasto in the process. Or both.

i totally agree the hero dying at the end of an amazing saga is a great ending. It provokes a profound and poignant conclusion to a story. However I would like to proffer a slight alternative. In 90% of the possible endings Shepherd should die in some manner (heroic or otherwise) to save the universe however maybe one ending could be the cowards way out and striking a deal and you see a flash of shepherd as a mindless husk surrounded by reaper destruction and the cycle continues

Well, maybe the paragon option will be to die, and the renegade will be to send someone else piloting the kamikazee missile of ultimate destruction into the midst of the reaper armada.

I don't mind if there is an option for Shepard to die at the end of ME3, but rather than the ME2 style where the death was a sort of failure, but rather a choice done in the same way as DAO.

Honestly there should be various endings depending on the player's choice.

Shepard going out in a blaze of glory would be apotheosic but there are many people that are looking forward for him/her to have a happy ending so it wouldn't be fair to them.

I totally disagree with the original post and would be very disappointed if this was forced.

A lot of games/films have ended with the heroes death, its not hugely original. And I'm not sure it's better. Fallout 3, for example, forced me into a radiation chamber, even though there was my mutant ally who was immune to radiation STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO ME! Saying "this is your sacrifice, you must do this." Why? Forcing someone to commit suicide doesnt seem to me to be the best ending.

I expect that, just like Shepherd could survive or not in ME2, I expect that same choice in ME3. In fact, I expect a full range of endings for everyone based on your decisions throughout the trilogy.

I would find a more happier ending, with Shepard training new soldiers.

Just because he is a hero, doesn't mean he cannot enjoy a pint and nurse wiping his arse in his older years. My uncle was a hero during WW2, and now he is 80+. He sits there enjoying his horse racing on tv, and you know what? He's still the same hero who risked his life on a daily basis all those years back.

I think even though Shepard has been screwed by the Alliance and Cerberus. He is still a soldier at heart, and a proud one at that. He would be perfect to train the new recruits and make them the best force in the galaxy. There will always be wars in a persons lifetime, I am sure Shepard won't get too bored after Mass Effect 3.

My Renegade Shepard does not do self-sacrifice, no matter what.
