The history of art disagrees. And thank god it does.

I know many people prefer Mario bros. and Pokemon. That doesn't mean the entirety of video games needs to be relegated to twelve-yr-olds.

I really hope someone at Bioware sees this thread. Don't make ME3 for 12 yr-olds. Please.

And for those who think nudity = jacking off: you are twelve, at least at heart.

Listen, people on here don't want nudity for any other reason than they want to see the character naked. That's it.
The jacking off would be the result of a greasy little teen watching naked aliens have sex with shepard.

Please don't compare video games to art. Mass Effect, however great and entertainin it is will never equate to Da Vinci's works, you're mad if you say so.

Well, that is a traditional attitude to say the least. I'm not comparing Mass Effect to
DaVinci. I am well aware that Davinci and the rennaissance are in essence responsible for some of the innovations we see in video games (perspective, anatomy, etc..)

I'm not the one who brought up masturbation, anyway. Many others here seem to think anyone who appreciates the human form just needs to get their rocks off. Not true. Again, look at painting and sculpture.

And video games ARE an art form. Who designs the environments, plumbers? Who do you think comes up with the character designs...must be construction workers, I suppose.

Sorry, but are you telling me design is art? Are you saying archetects are artists? They are srtists, sure,  but they don't create art. It isn't art, so stop saying it is. It's like saying transformers is art because someone drew a robot. It's not the same. Comic books aren't art, a drawing in a toilet isnt art.

Why are you comparing plumbers and builders to artists? They would be the pencil or brush, surely.
People look at art to get their mind working, they realise things about themselves through looking at the work. Mass Effect is entertainment, Star Wars is entertainment.

You must be able to see the clear differences between art and mainstream media. Yes? No?

No because the scene was already trashy as all hell. That would just make it trashier.

I believe that was the point I was trying to make there.

I'm talking about ME2

You are comparing it to ME1.

slimgrin wrote...

And Uzivatel, are you against nudity in general, do you think it should not be included in games at all? How about movies?

uzivatel wrote...

I dont mind nudity in games, but I am not sure its actually a good idea in this case. Sure, it gives BioWare/EA some extra publicity, but does it add anything to ME?

Again, I do not mind nudity in games, my problem is the way it is done, which in many cases feels pretty immature. It seems like many devs do not know how to use it (you could say the same about many film makers, but there are double standards).
I think devs should not fear nudity (that would be Dragon Age), but they should avoid using it for the sake of having it in the game (that would be Saboteur). I think ME1 did it about right (again, I am not you could call it nudity).

Granted its kind of hard to see (no zoomed in pics?) but yeah. Seriously....wtf BW. Now I can understand the no nudity during the love scenes (they're trashy enough as is) but censoring the statue of David? *sighs*

Those are the best I could find on google with safe search enabled, and I know better than to disable it. (rather not see Animal Crossing Hentai *shudders*)
I own the game myself, as well as some of the paintings/sculptures myself, but I'm not ejecting Monster Hunter 3 and putting in AC:CF just for that.

But here are the IRL Paintings/sculpture seen in the screens of Animal Crossing I posted...

You are talking about high and low art. Graphic art and illustration are generally considered "low" art. Davinci and Andy Warhol are considered "high" art. Personally, I've gotten by just fine without Warhol.

I just think it's a fallacy to differentiate between 'high' and 'low' because society thrives on both. This is straying off topic - again - but only because the human form is inextricably bound with art, and any tastefull representation of the human form is considered art. The alternative might be called porn.

If the naked form scares people then let's do what was suggested earlier, let's have an M-rated version, and a Kiddie-rated version. That way all can enjoy. But why stop there? let's do the same for movies and tv. Let's do it for books too, just to be safe. We shouldn't take any chances here...

To be honest Andy Warhol, in my opinion, is pretty much useless. I have no time for pop art. This is a sci-fi game and nakedness is completely unnecessary, I don't even know the term but it would be a form of self-indulgence.

Movies and TV should have nudity if it's called for, but not so some horny little loser can pleasure himself to a made up species. It's pathetic, sex scenes usually mean nothing in movies. They're dropped in for no reason other than to attract idiotic fools to watch. Just look at Twilight, it's a perfect example.

Sex in videogames is completely pointless, at least Bioware makes it feel like a part of the story. It's tastefully done and at no point do you feel that it could be improved by some alien ****** or ****. It cheapens it.

The point was, nudity is fine if it's called for. Usually in art it is. In TV and Movies it borders on pornography, it's smut. Can you see the difference? I'm starting to repeat myself, but I think you can get what I'm sayin'.

Nudity is abused, yes, I think we can agree on that. But I don't want to make assumptions on what is appropriate or called for in a given medium. I say this because if you look at art history, there are MANY occasions where taste or decorum was forced onto an art form. That is wrong.

Sure, nudity in games and tv and movies is often exploitative. But I will not say that nudity is not the domain of video games. Who knows what role it may play in 20 yrs or so?

I don't know, video games are interactive and are becoming even more interactive. If sex/nudity becomes more accepted in games in the near future then it can lead to some pretty weird things. Imagine Natal with....

It's dangerous territory, nothing is wrong with nudity but there are always people waiting to abuse whatever is there. I know for a fact there are weirdos who actually are in love with these characters in games, it's just going to get worse and worse. Video games is probably the most sensitive of all these forms of media because of it's interactive nature. See what I mean?

Some people collect sex dolls. Very realistic ones. I don't think its healthy, but I'm glad they're not collecting corpses.

Its not my business, really, if some guy wants to hump a Tali doll. That's his personal thing. Not mine. But its not illegal so far as I know. I don't see any of this as dangerous territory. I don't think it will slide into some freakish free-for-all orgy that would consume the globe...although that might be fun.

And generous slopes.  :D

I may wax philisophical, but I can turn into a twelve year old myself, I must admit.

Good times.

Stopped reading right there. Comics are no less art than books or movies are. They're mediums. You can have a comic that's trash and a comic that's art, the same way you can have books that are trash and books that are art.

More on-topic, I actually would prefer romance scenes more like ME1, or at least more balanced amounts of nudity/sensuality; the fact that all the others are fairly chaste aside from Jacob and Miranda really makes them come off as shallow fanservice romances. GO HERE FOR BOOBS, etc. It's really strange that ME2 is supposedly the more 'adult', mature game--more swearing, more blood, more explicit violence--but most of the romance scenes were really toned down.

I suppose it can be partly marked up to laziness (Liara was the same body model as Ashley and Femshep, just blue), since none of ME2's romances can share a body model on account of most of them are aliens/require unique, detailed textures (Jack's tattoos). Still, it's kind of annoying.

And no, I don't want ****** material in Mass Effect. It shouldn't be porn. But a bit of romantic, appropriate nudity is hardly porn. I don't know a single person who fapped to the romance scenes in ME1.
