If they're aiming at a younger audience, then why isn't Mass Effect 2 a T Rated game?

Maybe they're focusing on younger audience than for ME1, but still not young enough to not keep it M rated.

WHAT A YOUNGER AUDIENCE ???

Mate think about what you just said ...!!!

This game is not FOR KIDS !!!!

Its for ages 16 and UP !!!

WEAK UP ALREADY :s

Dont remind me a young kid i saw the earlier day that played God of War 3

and saw the sex scene with aphrodite !!!!

Kids play only crash bandicoot  and such style games

games with a little violence AND NO SEX

So that is a matter of their noob parents whom cant control them !!!

Cool story bro.

What is it so hard to understand in the idea that for an M rated game the average customer age is not equal to the average of all gamers who can buy M rated games? If that was the case with ME1, then ME2 could've been targeted at ages closer to the actual average age of the mentioned group.

Don´t know about the situation in USA / UK, but in Germany it´s because the people who rate videogames are the biggest dumbasses you can imagine. I wouldn´t be surprised if it´s similar elsewhere.

Yea. They can´t control the internet though. Well they make certain games unavailable at Steam, but Steam sucks anyways, and they can´t control the filesharing sites.

From Greece?...you lucky bastard. :P

How is nudity treated there, with such an abundance of 'naked' art?

You know, America isn't the only country in the world. Outside of America, hard as it may be to believe, Mass effect 1 and 2 have different age ratings.
So can people please stop acting like the only rating system around is ESRB (a system I'm no fan of). In England, Australia, Germany and other countries they are either rated 12 or 15 upwards.
--
On topic, I don't really think it needs to be involved, but I'd have no problem as long as it didn't go over the top and was tasteful-pretty much the ME1 romance scene. They don't really need anything more explicit then that imo.

Yeah, in the UK ME1 is actually 12 - even with the sex scene lol - while ME2 is 15. Apparently here they think sex isn't bad, but cursing ooh no.

And I read that in Germany, the depiction of animal cruelty and blood shed in games are more sensitive issues than nudity. Is this true?

Interesting how each country has it's own taboos.

No offense, but the game's target audience seems to be primarily American. Think of the Bioware Bazaar, for American's only.

DA's clumsily censored sex scene instantly and permanently shattered my sense of immersion. However, I actually rather liked the ones in ME2 - much as it pisses me off that BioWare (or more to the point, EA) decided to actively shoot for a PG-13 equivalent game, rather than doing what they wanted and allowing the chips to fall where they may (as they did with ME1).

Actually, my big issue is simply that BW is no longer pushing the envelope. Thank Christ we've got studios like Quantic Dream that are willing to go there; it's the only way games will ever achieve a level of respectability comparable to film. Shame I haven't got a PS3...

Perhaps the different sensitivities have something to do with religiosity, since religion is so obsessed with sex.... not to go into that but just throwing it out there :DD

I get what you're saying, but that was partly due to issues getting the rights.
@cruc1al I see your point. I think both games are personally probably about 15, but seeing as ME1 is pretty tame apart from that sex scene, I see no real problems with the ratings, even if there is the slightest bit of hypocrisy

@slimgrin: I wouldn't know, but that part about America not being the only country wasn't actually specific to this thread-the rating always being called M generally annoys me. But yes, in Britain it is certainly this way-Heavy rain (features stronger nudity and sex then ME1, but not full for anyone not aware)  is a 15, where as in the U.S it is an M if I hear correct.
The U.S rating system is strange to me. Unfortunately, the BBFC system is less and less used, and being replaced by the ridiculiously strict PEGI system (they give KOTOR2 a language warning where all I can remember is use of the word "damn." Really?)

They did say the Bazaar was intended for everyone but they ended up screwing it because of "legal complications". And they've said they'll bring similar contests to europe etc.

Yea violence is very baaad in Germany. In Videogames anyways. Our government´s dislike for killing didn´t prevent us from joining the war in Afghanistan for example. Apparently killing in real life is not as bad as in a game.

But don´t think they don´t censor nudity or sex here. They still do.
