A mature love scene certainly helps
the impact of a mature story. We accept nudity on a daily basis in our R
rated movies without complaining that it's cheap or movie-porn, and
anyone playing this game is suppose to be old enough to watch R rated
movies.
I think ME1 did them perfectly, as it was intimate and
tasteful. ME2 love scenes seem like they were specifically made for
teenager eyes. In fact the lack of blood/gore/nudity when doing things
that should result in such things makes it appear that much of
this game was designed with "teenager-appropriateness" in mind. Don't
get me wrong, much of the subject matter in the game is VERY mature
(Jacobs/Jacks loyalty), but the violence, and particularly intimacy, was
not.
I hope ME3 is completely aimed at adults, but probably not.
Regardless of what the game is rated, teenagers are where the most
money is at in the gaming industry, and EA knows it.
Well said, I've been wrestling with how to reply to this topic without either sounding like a someone sex-starved and looking for boobies or like I'm having the discussion wth the voices in my head.
But yes, in the case of Mass Effect 2. For a game rated M (or 18+ in Europe) some aspects were a bit too teen-friendly. If it were a movie a PG-13 rating would have been much more likely than an R. Like Homey C-Dawg says though, there were some pretty dark subject matters.
A game aimed at an adult audience should be like a show on US cable, you don't HAVE to curse and show skin, but the option to use it is there should it be desired.
I dislike politically correct moralists telling me what is and isn't appropriate entertainment.
