I don't think it's weird. Jade Empire has something Dragon Age and Mass Effect both lack: it's beautiful. Both games have superior graphics. That goes without saying. However, most areas in Mass Effect have that futuristic look to them that is lifeless and sterile. Even filthier looking areas have that quality because really, how many times can a person see the interior of a space station or ship before they begin feeling redundant?

Dragon Age suffers from a serious case of drabness in part due to some horrendously ugly textures that pull me right out of the scene, but also that Ferelden doesn't feel that inviting. Its often overcast and even when it isn't, several areas feel shallow. This is going to probably get everything I wrote dismissed, but I found a few areas in Neverwinter Nights 2 more full of life and personality than Dragon Age. The one exception is the Brecilian Forest which looks genuinely pretty to me, but one area in a whole game isn't enough. I also like Orzammar, looks wise, but the area design isn't inspiring.

Jade Empire has personality. I explore its maps and feel like I'm peeking into another world. The bright areas like Two Rivers, Tien's Landing, and the Imperial City are so colorful and full of personality. I *still* carry a mental image of how Tien's Landing looks after being flooded. It was just that beautiful to me. Another thing is the areas look lived in: take the Imperial City, for example. There are people walking *everywhere*. Granted many of them are built using models with inferior shading and you can walk right through them, which is a bit silly, but it makes it feel more like a city. Compare that to Denerim or the Citadel: there is no contest. The Imperial City isn't as glorious as Baldur's Gate or Amn in terms of scope and layout but easily has more life and style than anything else BioWare has done.

I think what it comes down to is artistic style. Jade Empire is older and it really shows at times. But it's also impressive from an artistic standpoint. The same reason Baldur's Gate 2's backdrops still hold up to this day is because, like Jade Empire, they are unique and lovingly crafted. You can tell the artists enjoyed their work and cared about its quality. It's everywhere in Jade Empire, from architecture, to clothing design on your various party members, to even little things like the way your character's face contorts into a snarl when choosing an angry response or becomes pouty when showing sympathy.

In other words: what scyphozoa wrote exaggerated upon to ridiculous degrees. ;) (Last time I go AFK in the middle of writing a post. :P)

@blueL yes i think youre .. or at least you didnt recodnize the bugs ..

Kotor ,i have my doubts bout that going mmo, cause mmos are black holes for the mentally ill imo and even BW gonna have a hard time battling those never happy folks day in day out.. but hey thats just my opinion.

Now to JE

JE was something out of the classic rpg pattern , thats why i was drawn into it ..and why i did appreciate it

As an expirienced gamer one thing i always do is turning the difficulty to max..so i di with JE ...and

boy that what some challenge lemme tell you

Eh? Dragon Age is quite a beautiful game.

Sure it's generic and one or two parts don't look so great but overall the game is quite beautiful looking.

I already wrote a whole post on the subject so no sense rehashing. I'll just add that yes, Dragon Age looks alright graphically, but the area layout and color choices more often than not feel drab and dare I say, generic... and that's in more than one or two parts in my opinion. For me it sort of peaked in Ostagar and then went downhill with the exception of two or three areas.

Jade Empire was one of those games I just never finished. Not because I thought it was bad just because... well I guess it just did not pull me in and hold me there. Maybe it needed more waffles? Thats a stupid question everything can always use more waffles!!

I would of course get a Jade Empire 2. That is if it is released for more then the xbox. Which I cannot see why that would be the case.

Are you referring to the color palette by any chance? The color palette of Jade Empire is far more vibrant than Dragon Age's, and some find that brighter color palette preferable. That's a matter of taste, however.

Yes, that´s one thing. But I actually think the face animations are a lot better, too, as well as the movement.

And anyways I prefer that Asian heaven look over the sad, dirty look of DAO.

JE faces lacked texture, but DA faces had so much dark texture (bags under eyes) it made completely normal, human NPCs look like sleep-deprived-zombie-methheads.

I'd like to see a second Jade Empire. I didn't care about the characters or plot in JE, but it was nevertheless a very beautiful and atmospheric game. Hopefully, the Mass-Effect-Effect, where the universe is built for the first episode then developed in the second, could result in a JE sequel that improves on the original.

I hope they make a JE2. I liked the first one a lot. It was gorgeous and fun and had great music and John Cleese's character was hilarious. It's too bad the PC port has some debilitating bugs that were never patched, but then BioWare didn't do the actual port, so hopefully this time around things would be better and they'd actually give the PC version some technical support.

right as if only graphics quality makes a good rpg..BG/BG2 still owns them follow ups like NWN1or2or nowdays DAO..hand on heart ...the looks might be better nowdays but at the same time the games get shorter and much more unchallenging.

that said can we pls stop comparing JE with other BW titles?

//Support for this thread and idea.

How can JE be the least selling of BW titles? It's amazing, my favorite game (well, haven't played BG series YET, or Nwn, but w/e).

Anyway, an interview of Greg and Ray, they said that JE held a special place in BW's hearts and would do something with it eventually. I know, I know, link or it didn't happen, I'll try to dig for it, but I wouldn't be surprised if BW did another Jade Empire sometime. Aw, that would be awesome!

I agree with that.  Other than the Brecilian Forest Dragon Age was pretty drab.

I also Agree with this.  Although I finished the game and it was an interesting and original concept I could never do another playthrough.  I tried and couldn't continue after a few hours.  I can't quite put my finger on it but it didn't really pull me in as you say Addiction21.
That being said I would still get JE2 if it came out.

i've always said that bioware games, by design and by quality, are too good to be compared to other games. the only thing bioware games can be compared to are other bioware games.

just imo.

In my opinion, Jade Empire should have a prequel... sorta...

Ever since Sky mentioned the tales of old legendary people, I imagined JE2 being set before the Empire was born, or during some civil war.

It would be awesome to cut a mountain in half (with or without explosives)!

I loaded up Jade Empire this evening and played it and you are right. Save for some less dynamic lighting the graphics on Jade Empire are very close to that of DA but with more color. The character animations and movements are very similar to DA. It is almost as if the same team that did JE had a hand in Dragon Age.

Jade Empire reminded me of that old show Monkey Magic. I've always considered it Bioware's most inspired game in terms of art and setting.

Strange of you to comment then if you never played Jade Empire, Dragon Age, or Mass Effect 2. :D I played all three of them at maximum settings. The latter two at 1680x1050 resolution. ~Shrugs~

I agree. While DA and ME are technically superior, Jade Empire has the upper hand on beauty and atmosphere. Mass Effect's visuals never did a thing for me but Dragon Age I really enjoyed. Maybe because I read how awful they were and when I finally played I thought 'not so bad'.

Never played Jade Empire, BUT I HAVE SEEN SCREENSHOTS! :P

I'll give you Dragon Age, maybe. The art in that game seems lacking most of the time.

I didn't encounter a single bug or crash in the PC version. Guess I'm just very lucky.
