Mine seems to be locking from transitions and when a lot of people talk at once in rapid time. I talked to 3 people in quick succession (I talked to the wrong person, and quickly went to the right one), and will lock up 3/4 of the time doing this.

Also, the GF had it happen to her when she talked to someone and then zoned into another area via a door. Every time we've had to dry boot the PS3, but no data lost. This is the only PS3 game ever to lock up like this. The least you could do is give me a BSOD so i don't feel as bad :P

I actually deleted all my game data, and started a new game twice.

It helped considerably, I got through about 6 hours of game play, but once I got to the end of Redcliffe it froze once...then again in the fade in the Circle Tower.

I'm going through again with another fresh character without changing my settings at all, because it seemed like it froze the first time right after I turned off Auto-Save.

I have a 1080p TV w/ HDMI connection, and it changes to 720p for DA:O I can downgrade my graphics and see what happens.

I was thinking of uninstalling everything on my machine, and attempting to reupgrade to 3.30 manually as some other users have suggested....

In an effort to recreate the problem I played both times using a trophies account and non trophy account using a female elven mage.  The spot where it froze for the trophies related game was in the first room right after talking to Jowan while randomly walking around.  The follow game in which I created a completely new account I have been able to get to the point where I walked Duncan to his room.

I've had freezes at the exact same spot under the exact same circumstances - if its any help narrowing things down..

Hi everybody,

Thanks for all the useful posts. We've got a lot of QA on this, but we're still trying to narrow down what causes the crashes. I'm reading through this topic to find patterns, but more information from you will be very helpful in moving things along. If you have a moment, message me directly with answers to the following questions:

- what class is your character?

Rogue

- what is your character wearing? Do crashes ever occur when you're changing gear?

chainmail, yes.

- for store crashes, what action exactly are you taking in the store when it crashes? (e.g. looking through your junk tab)

buying staff for morrigan.

- for save crashes, does it crash during autosaves or regular saves? If regular saves, what part of the save process? (e.g. selecting the save slot)

both. for regular saves, it crashes after saving the file.

- for Circle Tower and Fade crashes, what exactly are you doing when the game crashes? (e.g. killing blow on Hunger Demon)

Buying stuff from quartermaster.

- for leveling crashes, what class of character are you leveling? Are you autoleveling them or manually leveling them? When exactly during leveling does the game freeze?

Manual since im new in playing DA.

As many details as you can give us on any crash you experience is helpful. Even details that seem irrelevant are often important.

It randomly crashes. It's my 1st rpg for ps3 and it's a pretty bad experience for me.

Again, we really appreciate your help figuring this issue out. Unfortunately, we don't receive firmware updates from Sony until everyone else does, which makes it impossible for us to catch this prior to it wrecking your stuff. But, we're trying really hard to sort this out.

Thanks,

Bouvier

- what class is your character?

Warrior

- what is your character wearing? Do crashes ever occur when you're changing gear?

Shielded Dwarven Armor - No.

- for store crashes, what action exactly are you taking in the store when it crashes? (e.g. looking through your junk tab)

All crashes thus far have not been store crashes

- for save crashes, does it crash during autosaves or regular saves? If regular saves, what part of the save process? (e.g. selecting the save slot)

All crashes thus far have not been save crashes.

- for Circle Tower and Fade crashes, what exactly are you doing when the game crashes? (e.g. killing blow on Hunger Demon)

Usually I am just walking from place to place then then the game just freezes, quite frustrating.

- for leveling crashes, what class of character are you leveling? Are you autoleveling them or manually leveling them? When exactly during leveling does the game freeze?

All crashes thus far have not been leveling crashes.

As many details as you can give us on any crash you experience is helpful. Even details that seem irrelevant are often important.

It randomly crashes when my characters are walking from place to place. Never in battle or in any of the menus. Usually in towns - Denerim, and Redcliffe Village thus far.

Thank you

I did have Dragon Age already installed when I got the frimware download.

- what class is your character?

Warrior

- what is your character wearing? Do crashes ever occur when you're changing gear?

Crashes do not occur when changing gear.

- for store crashes, what action exactly are you taking in the store when it crashes? (e.g. looking through your junk tab)

Crashes have not occured while in any store.

- for save crashes, does it crash during autosaves or regular saves? If regular saves, what part of the save process? (e.g. selecting the save slot)

All crashes currently  have not been save crashes.

- for Circle Tower and Fade crashes, what exactly are you doing when the game crashes? (e.g. killing blow on Hunger Demon)

Crash only occurs when running or walking through citites.

- for leveling crashes, what class of character are you leveling? Are you autoleveling them or manually leveling them? When exactly during leveling does the game freeze?

Crashes do not occur while leveling.

As many details as you can give us on any crash you experience is helpful. Even details that seem irrelevant are often important.

So far crashes only occur while characters are running or walking usually though a city. Currently the game is crashing  while exploring the Dwarf Village (can't remember the city name off hand). Crasahes occur randomly, in other words, i am not doing anything specific at the time except running or walking. The camera is always on the main character when the crash occurs. Party memebers are not in the scene. There is no warning when the crash will occur..ie, the framerate does not drop, the graphics do not change...etc...it just freezes.

There is audio when the crashes do occur. There is also not a hard drive problem. I have plenty of  storage space available.

For the devs:

There is one area where i had the game crash constantly, i couldnt even finnish that part of the game.

Location: Denerim
Just after all the backalley encounters you go into a house and there you are attacked by lots of mobs.

class: Dwarf commoner, Rogue with Momentum active. Party was Wynne, Ohgren and Alistair.
Equipment: Thorn of the gods and Roses Thorn daggers i belive was their names. All other gear was magical, studded leather or leather tier 6 or 7 i think.

Before i deleted the whole game and all saves i could not finnish that house.. i tried about 10-20 times before i gave up, but the game always froze and music still played in the backround.

The PS3 really struggled to keep the game running at all in that house, but i dont know with other chars because i werent near that location with any of my other chars so i cant confirm that it will freeze at that point for everyone.
I havent tried to reproduce it, because i had done a fair bit of the game, about 20 to 30h, I was in Orzammar playing that char when i downloaded 3.30 and after that the problems started with random crashes.

My game has frozen up quite a bit. Once during auto-save, once walking around in Orzamar, once in the walking around in the Circle of Magi, and the last one is on a new game I started last night, about 3 hrs. in when i was talking to Flemmeth just after she rescued me, it froze during our conversation. Also my ps3 froze on White knight Chronicls and Deamon's Souls yesterday, granted my ps3 was in use ALL day but still, this is very annoying!

Sony update after Origins reinstall

Unstable online - Crash every few minutes

Playing offline

character Mage?

- what is your character wearing?

Reapers Vestments, Helm of Honneleath

Do crashes ever occur when you're changing gear?

NO

Store crashes, what action exactly are you taking in the store when it crashes?

I have seen crashes moving quantity bar on craft items

Crashes on making potions or traps quickly

Save crashes, does it crash during autosaves or regular saves?

Not regular just 1 time on Auto

Inactivity seems to get it to lock up most

Just hit select to pause or set controller down

Circle Tower and Fade crashes, I have not seen one there

A big intensity of graphics fighting and casting a lot of spells - Sometimes you get a pause of video

other times a lock up entirely.

Buying stuff from quartermaster.

No different from store - Selecting large amouts moving the bar

Leveling crashes, None

Does anyone else feel like were beta testing again? Anyhow here is my crash info for today Bioware.

Crash#1: Crashed when going through each character's stat menu w/ L1 or R1. @ the time 2 characters could level up. This happened in the deep roads.

Crash#2: Game froze/hung trying to enter Ordan Thaig but didn't deadlock the system as i was able to quit out with the PS Menu Button

Crash#3-4 Both times this has happened to me and i said screw it for the day. Deadlocked the system at the change party screen at camp when you get ready to leave the campsite. Seem to start it after i started Morrigan's personal quest.

Hi, The freezes seem to have stopped for me after turning off PS Upscaler and PS Smoothing in Settings: Game Settings. It was freezing about every 10-30min, but I've played for a couple hrs without a freeze since turning off the settings mentioned. Just a fyi - may be worth trying.

This solution works for me.

Froze 6hours signed out after autosave.

Froze after being hit by an fireball caused me to freeze in the fade while signed out.

Froze while randomly walking in a newly loaded area.

If im online it freezes within 15-20minutes.

Signed out i can have 4-6hours of gameplay before crashing and it usually happens when loading an area, being hit by a fireball, and being attacked by a group of 5-6people after 6 hours signed out but if signed in the minute i see 6+ enemies and ingage them i crash.

Crashed in the deep roads in rucks area with the spiders twice in 5minutes.

Thats about the extent of my crashing.

It seems my crashes occur when I try to unload some graphics intensive spell. I always wait for the save icon to stop flashing.  I've only ever played the same character and am nearing the end of the game so I can say with certainty that the game was not behaving like this before the 3.30 update. I'm going to try the above hotfix and see if it works, then report any findings.

I thought i would assist.

- what class is your character?

Female Dwarven Warrior, just picked up Champion on this character

- what is your character wearing? Do crashes ever occur when you're changing gear?

Juggernaut Armor and a couple dragon scale pieces

- for store crashes, what action exactly are you taking in the store when it crashes? (e.g. looking through your junk tab)

N/A

- for save crashes, does it crash during autosaves or regular saves? If regular saves, what part of the save process? (e.g. selecting the save slot)

I have not seen it crash while loading a save or saving a game

- for Circle Tower and Fade crashes, what exactly are you doing when the game crashes? (e.g. killing blow on Hunger Demon)

I was just walking around and working on the summoning quest. When it finally crashed I was not interacting with anything, just walking to the next item.

- for leveling crashes, what class of character are you leveling? Are you autoleveling them or manually leveling them? When exactly during leveling does the game freeze?

N/A

I crashed while doing the Flemeth battle after about 10 minutes i would guess. I crashed while fighting a wolf pack random event (while engaged in battle), I crashed while walking the streets of denerim (the market zone), I also crashed in the caverns for the urn quest while walking down one of the paths.

Hope this helps

Just a few things I think may be helpful:

class: Human Male Warrior

Played for about 2-3 hours today without freezing and then it froze when I tried to re-enter the Dalish Camp from the Brecillian Forest.

I most frequently experience crashes when I'm scrolling through the stats menu's for my characters, when I'm trying to level up, or when I'm fighting a large number of enemies.

So far I've had it crash in the following places:

Denerim-
Brecillian Forest-
Redcliffe-
Orzammar-
Deep Roads-

As well as a few other places.

Often when it freezes the music continues to play, and other times it completely stops. Everything freezes up, I can't even open the XMB or anything.

Ah, just had my first crash in 4 hours of play.  Before it happened every 15-20 minutes.  This crash occured at the character selection screen of all places LOL.  Apparently the problem is not 100% fixed (and they need to do something), but it is much better.

My game will freeze aprox 60 minutes after playing. Of the times it's frozen, it most often freezes on the character select screen. I have everyone possible recruited, up until landsmeet option, including stone prisoner dlc. It has never frozen during combat, and when in the open world, it freezes when entering and walking around.

Anyone that is hating Bioware for this problem, do not place the blame on them. I logged well over 100+ hours in this game, froze maybe once during that entire time. I installed v3.30 of PS3 firmware, all of a sudden I can't play without thinking "when will it freeze next." The transition to 3D and Move is creating this problem, whatever Sony is doing, screwing with the reliable system we once had. I don't care about 3D, and if I wanted motion, I'd buy a Wii. I want my PS3, but Sony keeps screwing me out of it.

Sorry for the rant.

Just for the record I tried this as well, game froze five minutes after, while I was trying to buy something at the Bar in Denerim.

Im sure here no one minds sony loves to mess with us and make us there beta testers somthing always goes wrong like that last PSN clock bug that made everyone so no one could sign in. Kudos to bioware for atleast knowing we exist if we didn't have this fourm dragon age would remain unfixed forever. I want a PC now :/

Doesn't seem to work for me. Tried turning the Game Settings according to aumichael's and it lasted not 10 minutes during gameplay. Reverted to my default settings after a few tries and found the game ran better in comparison. Running Dragon Age: Origins on a Sony Trinitron 27-inch SD TV.

I realized while playing that when engaging enemies during combat, majority of my crashes came about when I switched to my ranged party members and aimed (or tried to aim) a spell/skill at a target WHILE the radial menu was up. Game would freeze instantly as soon as I'd select a spell/skill. In real time however, with Tactics enabled/disabled, there were no problems. Have not encountered a crash thus far with reference to my melee party members and their respective skills while targeting enemies with the radial menu.

Anyone else getting this, or is this a one-off?

While I applaud BioWare for trying to fix the part of this issue that affects their game(s) I think it is better that we all acknowledge there is a much bigger problem here and BioWare is better off using their contacts at Sony to fix this update issue all together.

Lord knows its nearly impossible for the consumer to get Sony to acknowledge anything let alone do anything about it.  There are bricked PS3 systems, PS3 systems that won't get on the internet, PS3 systems that freeze in certain games or, as in my own case, PS3 systems that won't use blue-tooth any more.  Two PS3s, one phat and one slim, that won't respond to a bluetooth remote in any way.

Please BioWare, talk to Sony for us!  I've not read this whole thread due to its size but I have read pages 11 through 16.  Is anyone on these forums aware of the wide array of problems not even related to DAO that are plaguing PS3 systems since the 3.30 update?  If BioWare fixes their game (again, applause for even that effort) what is keeping Sony from breaking the game again if they fix the broader issues here.  You might have to all go through this again.  Go to the source and get Sony to fix it!

p.s.  No I don't own DAO for the PS3, I bought it on STEAM for my PC.  Can I still post here?  :)
