I don't envy the developers on this one - it seems very random and can sometimes take hours to happen. Been trying hard to find a reproducible case, no luck.

It went away for a couple of days while I did the quests in Orzammar, then it came back right after Oghren joined the party and we got to the first cave in Carridin's Crossing. This is the cave on the top left of the map, with a trench in the middle, spanned by a stone bridge. The crash was happening every few minutes in this cave, and it seemed to calm down after I cleared all the mobs up to the Hurlock Alpha that stands on the arch of the bridge. Once the cave was fully cleared, I didn't see a crash again until some of the other caves.

It's going to be rough to track this down, it might be some sort of threading/IO/concurrency thing, something with how the memory pages line up, etc... who knows. A couple of times the PS3 crashed with the bluray drive stuck spinning.

Good luck. Sucks on Sony that we can't back out of patches. Never thought consoles would start to need "restore points".

I had somewhat of a reproducable problem.  It was outside the Radcliffe Castle in the courtyard and seemed to be occurring because I was aggroing the archers on the steps when they couldnt see me.  Seemed HAL was getting all hissy about going from "attacking/no I cant cuz I cant see em".  But it is occurring elsewhere as well with the only noticable occurance being a quick change to the screen and status of the party all at once as if the PS3 was saying "hell i cant do that" and freezing.  I hope this gets changed fast!:crying:

Hehe havent actually googled it Posted Image

Ok I have reinstalled everything and been playing since I last posted and so far the game's been running smoothly so maybe for people who had DAO installed from pre 3.30, uninstalling everything and reinstalling can fix it although I dont know if its gonna last but at least its something

My game seems to freeze after I use the R1 or R2 buttons. I'm sure it's a coincidence, but it's a weird coincidence.

Well i'm gonna do what Scorpgul did and uninstall it and make a fresh install of it. I'll let you know if it improves or if i opened up pandora's box.

This made me think of something. Not sure if anyone mentioned this as I haven't read every page, and since I haven't update the firmware on my PS3 I can't check this myself. (As I am not having any problems at the moment.)

Question for the devs: Is it possible the game is locking up while attempting to update character information on the Bioware Social Network site?

That might explain the seemingly completely random nature of the crashes. Well it's a thought anyway.

It´s sad that such problem ruins the game for those who just bought DA. For those who just wanted to play it again and maybe test some new DLC´s like me, its bat but not that worse as for new gamer cuz they wasted their money until this problem is solved.

Hope Bioware can fix this problem soon :?

I envy those people who have been playing the game prior the 3.30 update. I can't really be satisfied and enjoy  this game knowing that I have to save every 5 mins. and hoping there's a 0.00001% of it freezing while doing so.

but yeah.. this was really indeed the worst timing  for a someone who's picking up DAO for new and old gamers alike.

I don't think so I had the same thought and tried playing the game completely offline not even logged into psn or connected to the internet at all, didn't change a damn thing

So earlier I tried a full uninstall, signed out of the PSN, and then reinstalled the game. As it finished reinstalling the base game, a message came up that my profile had been corrupted and fixed, and that the game default settings were set.  Dont remember the eact message.

I had to go to work , and didnt have a chance to play.  After work, downloaded and installed all the DLC, disc based Awakenings, and had four hours of play till it just froze on me while trying to level Nathaniel.  When I installed Awakenings, got the same error message about corrupted profile data.

Grrr.  The frustrating thing about this is that this is the only  game I own for the system. At least I get free PS3 game rentals at my job.  Time to try my hand at God of War 3 I guess

I've been a silent voyeur of this thread, probably mostly because I'm only mildly affected by this problem. After reading this thread (and others at different forums) my conclusion is that the only real common denominator is firmware version 3.30.

Examples:
For some people it works better without PS Smoothing, while for others that setting does exactly nothing.
For some people it works better with the network turned off, while for others that doesn't help much at all.
For some people the crashes tend to happen during graphic intensive gameplay, while for others (including me) it happens during the least graphic intensive moments.

I have a 40gb (upgraded to 250gb) PS3 (2nd gen, I think). DLCs: Awakening, Prisoner of Stone, Blood Armor, Return to Ostagar, Warden's Keep.

I can play the game without crashes for hours. I've never had the problem of it crashing several times in a short time-span. When it has crashed it has mostly been in "calm situations", like when forming the party, or when tinkering with the equipment, and then sometimes during normal "exploration". It has _never_ happened to me in combat.

"Delete and reinstall" sounds like it's grasping at straws, to be honest. I can't possibly see how that would fix anything - and I've seen people having done that, saying it doesn't work. It's a common "recommendation" whenever you want to buy time and give your annoyed customers something to tinker with for a while.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Bioware is at fault here - Sony is. Unfortunately, I think it would take a firmware update/rollback to fix this issue (and several others I've read about) and with their attitude towards problems - that might take a while.

I have had 2 crashes in all my DA gaming and they were both pre-3.30. I have played 100+ hours in all and always logged in.

I have the original 80gb fatboy and have all the DLCs installed, though I haven´t played Awakening much.

This is definitely anecdotal ...

Once I hit the Tower, issues began. I disconnected from the Internet (Ethernet) seemed somewhat to help - then several freezes. I then did the PS Smoothing trick and since then, no issues. That is with 2 hours of game-play in. Anecdotal and not definitive, but there you are ...

I assume (hope!) that Bioware (with EA's weight behind them) are working extremely closely with Sony on this problem to understand what went into the 3.30 firmware update and how this might have affected DA:O. This would be normal practice for a 3rd party software developer out in the general IT world when, for example, a Microsoft OS security patch breaks a 3rd party application - I have personal experience of this!

Let's hope they come up with something soon!

My own feeling on this is that it won't be a patch from Bioware (this would most likely involve a massive recoding/regression testing effort if something has fundamentally changed in firmware 3.30) but is more likley to be a further firmware update (3.31 anyone?) from Sony.

oh well i'm back to freezing again! Managed 5 hours before it happened again, this time in Denerim whilst attacking the second blood mage in the abandoned building. I went to activate a lyrium potion via the round menu and it froze just then, Bah!

May give the smoothing and upscaling options a tweak next as this seems to be having some positive results.

Has anyone else got an email from the Lead QA? They've asked me for really detailed information about my PS3 and what my habits are when playing DA:O so they can try and replicate the problem. Hopefully this will eventually lead to a fix.

I think it's just that the update stuffed a lot of things up, not just DA:O, according to various reports, that's why I have a 360, at least our updates don't brick consoles...

Seems Sony is under pressure atm on top of having to correct this fail update they are being sued for removing Other OS feature with 3.21

I'm from Germany and sure enough my game freezes now too occasionally. I'm playing a mage, and noticed that whenever he uses the ice weapon thingy or telekenetic thing the game freezes more often. Maybe this is just a coincidence though. I contacted Sony and EA, but no luck there. I also posted on the Facebook site, but nothing there yet either. So hopefully Bioware or Sony comes up with a fix fast! I love this game, and have been playing since November without issues, and now this... bummer...

Well, either way, it's just more fuel for the 360 gamers to fire at PS3 owners. They bag us about our almost non-existent RROD problems, we give them hell about 321...patch o'death and the clock of doom error.
