No, it can happen at any time. My buddy has been trying everything, including totally disconnecting his PS3 from the internet, and it still freezes. It's something being caused by 3.30 so going offline won't help.

People's games are freezing. Playtime varies. I could only play for 5 minutes before my game would freeze up. A friend of mine could play for over an hour before his game froze.

Yeah, the problem with that is too many freezes can corrupt your save data... as my experimenting buddy found out. I'm too paranoid to play right now. I don't want to muck up my save data... though maybe it's too late for that ^_^;;;

Someone told me, why don't you format your PS3?
you will delete every firmware and updates.
And don't update your system after the format, just leave it until there is an solution for it.

I think we can play than? (put every data on a Stick)
I did't try it because i don't know if that really will work.

It's impossible to downgrade the firmware on the PS3. This holds true for a lot of hardware btw. Firmware upgrades are often definitive. Firmware is not installed on a harddisk, it's installed on a chip somewhere on the PS3.

And still no solution... the weekend is almost over, back to work tomorrow... great.

Edit: last time i'm ever buying a Sony product. I got a frigging console because gaming on the pc is always about fixing problems to make a game work right. And now i get this **** on a console too =_=

Well I had a good session last night with no freeze. Just save regularly and you will be fine, well I was.

Every thirty seconds ? I tried it yet again last night and I got in and out of inventory once and took two steps forward then *bam* freeze.

Don't know why people are not playing the game when saving regularly avoids freezing.

Because saving regularly does not avoid freezing perhaps? My friend saved practically every five minutes and that did not stop the game from freezing nor did it stop his save data from being corrupted.

@Chrissy: Darn. I guess we'll have to wait till the weekend is over. Do you guys in the US have a holiday this Monday too?

@brammers_01: No we do not,

Wtf, btw its not Biowares fault that our games keep freezing.  Its the boneheads at Sony, or is it Sony...  Im thinking its a conspiricy, its Microscoft trying to make it a Exclusive like they did with Mass Effect.  Its treason i say!!!!

No.  It's not BW fault.  But BW is the only one that seems to be trying to fix it.  Sony has completely denied that there is any problem at all.

What holiday do you guys have on Monday, brammers?

Its the first Monday of May, so apparently that means we have a holiday :P All the banks close so EVERYTHING else does too :P
btw, sorry for the late reply. Stupid time difference...

I'm just throwing this out there. Maybe I'm wrong about this. But, since the freezing is totally random, could the problem be a heavy system load (overloading the processor or memory in some way)? Maybe the last firmware update allocated more of the normally available system resources to other PS3 system processes (in order to accommodate 3D support), which leads to a (unexpectedly) reduced access to system resources by the game with as a result the random freezing?

Actually the new firmware is smaller thus giving your PS3 a little bit more available memory.
Besides I even had the game freeze while simply standing in camp doing nothing.

As I said before most probably we have to deal with at least 2 problems. One being some problem with playing logged into PSN and the other one might be related to the new 3D support, which might explain that the game hangs up on heavy effects load.

The change in the SDK(which should have no direct effect on us players) might be the reason why BioWare can't reproduce our problems on devkits.

Whatever the case may be Sony surely shoudl hurry up and fix it(or at least give BioWare enough information so that they can fix it)...cause I'm not sure how much kicks in the nuts the PS3 players can take.

i am on the fringe of trading in my ps3 and getting a 360 might sound crazy because of one game but the apparent lack of concern from sony is whats putting me off staying with playstation who knows what problem will surface next

FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUU =@

I only got the game yesterday!

The freezing is ridiculous, I loaded a save a second ago and it froze after about 2 minutes of walking around.

Luckily I have the receipt!

For some people going offline helps but the freezes still happen for me it didn't do a damn thing

And there is no real pattern a few people get 6 hours a few get 2-5 and some (like me) cant get a full minute

 What the freezes seem to have in common are three things.
  • They happen at random
  • The music continues to play, but the gameplay freezes
  • A number of things we have done make the freezes, albeit sometimes, occur less often. The things we have done are in essence the exact same thing, they remove some functionality. (No network, No auto-save, etc)
The PS3 uses numerous processor cores, probably not all of them are used while gaming. Example: We can access the XMB during gameplay, which would probably indicate that it might run on a seperate core from the game we are playing.

Dragon age is most likely designed to function in the same way. Example: It would be foolish to let the audio and the actual game run on the same core(they are probably split. 1 core handles audio, 3 cores handle the game, 2 cores for the PS3 itself). I didn't design the thing or dragon age, I am guessing. However, if i would develop an actual game, i would definately split the load of the game amongst the different cores. I believe the PS3 uses 7, or or 8 cores.

This would explain why the music is still playing, even though the game has frozen. I could go deeper into this, but it would just bore you.(Google 'Multicore Threading' if you are interested). You can also learn a few things from the uncharted 2 interviews on the game disc, under extras. There is so many things happening all at once in that game, they split everything amongst the cores.

It would seem to me that the resources that were available to dragon age(before the update), are no longer available. The PS3 already had a hard time running dragon age with the framerate drops, and occasional lag spikes.
DA seems to be running out of available resources, and the game now freezes because of it. I believe the update aggravated whatever problems DA already had... in which case we would be screwed... unless they find a fix for the performance issues we already had.

A somewhat educated guess, but still a guess...

Yeah I agree with you, It's a really awesome game. However I read some comments on this site and on boardus.playstation.com and most people seem to think It will take around 3-6 months before a patch to fix the problem is released and that really puts me off :unsure:
