Game crashing after PS3 Firmware 3.30 update

I'm so happy I found this thread. I've been trying to get back into Dragon Age: Origins, and I decided to update my PS3 so I could get it online to ensure that I have the newest patches and such, even though I was very unhappy that it would remove OtherOS support.

Now, I find that Dragon Age: Origins freezes after less than an hour of gameplay (sometimes it will freeze within the first 5 minutes of gameplay after a previous freeze). Like everyone else, the PS3 completely locks up; I can't access the XMB, etc.

I used canned air on every vent I could possibly find -- not much dust anywhere; my PS3 is less than a year old -- and it still froze. I feared that my PS3 was defective or overheating.

...but other games didn't lock up. So I was confused. I looked at the disc under light for a good 10 minutes. No scratches, fingerprints, etc... game still looks brand new, and acts as a nice mirror!

Now, I can see that it's just a regression due to the new firmware. I'm happy that a patch is going to be released next week. I really hope that it addresses this game breaking problem. I've noticed that it only occurs while I'm moving the camera, so maybe it's some texture loading glitch. I've noticed that the game cannot 100% keep up with texture loading when moving the camera; you see brief moments of white in some places before a texture loads (I'm running the game in 720p, so your experience may differ at lower/less demanding resolutions), so I know the game loads textures when you are moving the camera.

For now, I'm going to try to play more, even with crashes. I just want to be done with this game, tbh; I'm having a hard time enjoying it due to a few design quirks that bug me.

Does anybody know if reinstalling the game mitigates the problem at all?

There's really nothing you can do except stop playing and wait for the patch. Sorry :)

I am not certain if this works with this thread but, I am not seeing another place to post this so, thank you in advance for your patience.

Problem:
Redcliffe village zombie fight before going to Redcliffe castle the first time.  All the undead are killed. Nothing happening. I looked for other posts  and saw some responses for the PC platform not PS3. I've found the issue isn't unique. Apparently PC users can run a script killhostiles or something. I don't we have an option like that.

Actions I've taken:
searched the entire map for straggler undead, doesn't seem to be any. Knights are still alive and so is Thomas, I believe they should be dead but, there is nothing left to kill them. Tried restarting the console at least twice. Tried running all over the map hoping to trigger something - including the green fog. Nothing.

Bummer part:
My last save was during this battle. No other previous saves. I don't even want to restart the game because I could play through and get to this point again.

All suggestions are welcome.

Redcliffe village undead battle - unbelievable. One undead not on the map, standing behind one of the appartments by the lake. Killed the bugger and finally the cut scene. That is a pain.

Surely you have other games to play while you wait.

The game is not going anywhere.  It sucks that its down but we will have it back soon enough

Just gonna say, I don't actually have other games to play, 'cause I only boought my PS3 recently and this is the only game I've got, lol

Yeah this is kind of off topic. I'll try to help anyway. This happened to me on my last play-through. I just waited and eventually the last undead appeared for me to take him out. I think I waited for like 5 minutes.

Hi, I just want to say I recently bought Dragon Age Origins for the PS3. It is hands down my favorite game, I cannot stop playing it. The thing is it was crashing, time it takes to crash was totally random. It could be from maybe 30 seconds into the game, to half an hour into the game or even 4 hours into the game. I play on 720p settings. I know its not the games fault because when I did the research a lot of people had the problem on the 3.30 firmware (which unfortunately, so do I, haha). So just wanted to let you guys know you guys are doing a great job and thank you for not letting this problem go unfixed.

Count me amongst the group that only has Dragon Age Origins and Awakenings and the DLC, but no other games

Well, there are currently 96 pages of posts, so i don't blame them for not reading all of it and seeing the post concerning next week's patch on page 90.

They don't have to! If they go to Dragon Age: Origins Playstation 3 Technical Support and click on the blue BIOWARE they see what Bioware has posted so far on the subject!

THANK YOU!!!

I swear, practically everyone here worships the ground Bethesda walks on and is always saying that Bioware needs to make their DLC more like Bethesda's.
After playing Fallout 3 on PS3, I'm done buying Bethesda games new... I'll wait a year when it sells for $20 used, and pray to God that they patched at least most of the game-breaking bugs. I wasn't even going to get Fallout New Vegas, until I heard Obsidian was developing it.

Fallout 3 actually inspired my GameFAQs sig...
"I imagine Bethesda's Quality Testing Department a big, dusty room filled with cobwebs, and a chimp wearing a Fez banging on the keyboard of a single computer..."

Hehe, yeah...like I said, normal Fallout 3 is acceptable on PS3, but the add-ons make it unplayable. I have never experienced a console game being so damn buggy; basically it seems like an early beta or something, and they never even acknowledge problems or make a statement on their forums.

It often makes me wonder if it is not possible to sue them for selling and not fixing a defective product. Gothic 3 on PC was a mess too, but at least there was some effort to make it better; Bethesda does NOTHING.

Glad Bioware is not like that...

Then please start to get mad now, because the PSN updates on Tuesday (US) or Wednesday (EU), not Monday.

Sony's days for getting things to download like the PSN Store updates and when games need update or even DLC's used to be Thursdays. But recently I think last week they have gone to Tuesdays. That's what that guy was talking about missing the dead line. I would look for Tuesday as to being the day for the patch.

I got my DLC just fine all i had to do was buy that 3 doller combo gift pack and then my free voucher stuff showed up avaiable to download.. And as far as when Sony releases it to us This comming from 3 people i talked to them on their customer support line They stated Its immediate release to public once it was passed to them.. So yeah i agree with some of you why the wait but i just hate the run around with customer support...

So you consider having to spend 3 dollars to get what was advertised as free "just fine?"

Actually Yeah whats 3 dollers nothing really and i understand most dont wanna spend 3 extra dollers for the 15 doller addon to show up that you have a voucher for but Maybe i wanted the gift addon as well i actually spent 20 some dollers in addon i do in all games I spent 120 on DA O and got Awakings and all donloaded content thats how i am i dont waste money in PS Home just spend it in Addons

I don't know if this is the cause, but I have noticed that ever since the 3.3 update, I haven't seen the system error indicating a loss of connection to the PS3 network. Sound is continuing for me as well when it crashes the system. The update and the lack of system error message about loss of PS Network connection are the only new changes I've noticed since the crashes began. I'll read up more when I have time and see what else I can do to help. Used to be in tech support and currently program for a living :)

Just to let you all know that the patch has gone through EA Cert and has now made it to Sony's hands! I don't have an official release date estimate yet, but with a little bit of luck we may still see it late this week. I'll update you when we know more.

The upcoming patch addresses:
- The high rate of crashing on firmware 3.3.
- The issue where redeeming codes was no longer showing the free download items.
- Adds the trophies for the upcoming Darkspawn Chronicles DLC

Once again, my sincere thanks to all of you that posted on here and helped us track this down.

Same problem.  Tried reinstall.  No help.  Hope this patch comes out soon!
