Does art even have an official definition?

I do not know but I am positive at one point art critics were saying that movies will never be art...

At one point music wasn't an art.

Well, if art is supposed to induce certain feelings into a human being, I'd say games are already there.

Roger Ebert co-wrote Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. I think we can readily dismiss his opinion on movies let alone things he knows nothing about.

I don't think that anything that elicits an emotional response is necessarily art (if I chase you with a knife, you'll likely feel scared, that still isn't what I'd call art) but I think great art does necessarily have to create that emotional response, even if it is just awe over the epicness of what your'e seeing, like with a great classical sculpture or God of War's titans. So, depending on how you define art games might not be art, but they definitely have that element going for them.

Yes, you should regret asking that. What a strangely terrible film. I loved it.

and those people are morons. anyway, i guess video games can be art, but it's pretty weak. movies and plays make sense because they are performing arts. video games don't fall into that. to me it's one of those borderline kind of things.

Who Decides ‘What is Art’?

Funny thing about the Twitter-verse, when a well-known pundit Tweets some off-the-cuff commend like “Video Games Can Never Be Art,” one is apt to take it personally. Because what is Twitter for, if not to allow celebrities to speak directly to me.

So, for the most part when a Twitter-er shows signs of being an idiot on a pretty consistent basis, *coughAdamBaldwincough*, I am sad for a moment, then I un-follow and go on contentedly with my un-celebrity life. Maybe it’s because I come from a place where politicians regularly think that they get to decide ‘what is art’, but something about Roger Ebert’s definitive statement sends a shiver of apprehension down my spine.

One of the broadest definitions of art I ever heard was "something created in a state of heightened consciousness," which enables any hack to call his own bowel movements "art." And the critics buy it. But that's another rant entirely...

Most of the "video games aren't art" assertions come from fossils who still see games as childrens' toys, which is why so many of them also get a bad case of red-ass when video games have adult content. They refuse to acknowledge that video games have evolved into something other than just "toys." The very best games, like the best films, entail multiple forms of recognized art: good writing, good acting, etc, etc. I'm not even certain some of these critics have actually spent any time with modern video games first hand, relying only on rumors and misinformation from people like Jack Thompson and the fine folks at FOX news. And oh god, I'm rambling, aren't I?

I believe cynicalsaint was the one who referred to Silent Hill. I completely agree. In fact, I'd go so far to say that ever since playing the first two Silent Hill games, horror movies have done absolutely nothing for me.

Anyway, all I really meant to say here is that these annoying old sticklers will kick the bucket soon and the arts will see the zeitgeist move on.

Topics that people find interesting and would like to talk about are also subjective. That is what a public forum is for. Particulary an off topic part like this one we are in now.
Are video games art is the topic at hand and it is a fair question to discuss. Your opinion is that art is subjective but how does that include video games? Is it the same for video games? Each person decides on their own if this individual game is "art" or is the medium as a whole "art"?\\\\
If you do not want to discuss it fine. That is your right but do not tell others they cannot.

Edit: Looking around at your recent posts in this and other threads it is safe to assume your a troll. Have a nice day.

I do wonder why Ebert seems to care. It isn't like the gaming community is saying that film isn't art because video games are. Aside from publicity it seems like this argument is not for him to make, he doesn't know a thing about games. His argument (the longer one on his blog) seems pretty good, but he doesn't have any real evidence to help him out. He should stick to movies so I can ignore what he has to say about them. Leave video games to the ones with an interest in the subject.

so you think dissected animals or turds thrown against a wall is art? to me it's an attention thing, not about art. besides it being just plain silly, i also think it's not art because i think something needs to be created. taking some stuff and putting it somewhere just doesn't seem like art to me. acting is bringing a movie/play to life, i'm on the fence about video games, but again an experience is being brought to life, a story is being told, etc. sculpting, painting, acting, i guess video games too to an extent all do this. music is art. you bring something to life, the song, with your voice/instrument. something is created.

I remember at the Tate modern art gallery once (or somewhere else) that someones submission was a brick.
