from the devs, the install should be about 16-17 gig, end of line.

It's just RAR files, same as Mass Effect. The game is manufactured on DVD9s and my current English install is 15.2 GB (16,403,644,805 bytes).
I'm expecting a digital download of around 9 to 10 gigs. Crossing fingers no surprises or having to re-download corrupt files. Once will be enough under Australia's current internet pricing and plans.

DVD-9 can hold approximately 7.95 gigabytes of data, even though marketers like to use the 8.5GB value instead, but this is misleading and is calculated by using so-called "Japanese gigabytes" which means that gigabyte is calculated as 1,000 megabytes, but in real computer terminology, gigabyte is 1,024 megabytes.
So, we should be looking at about an 8GB download, not counting the DLC.

well, what I had was also from Derek, even though quiet a long time ago, I can not find the thread right now. But at that time he stated "something around 16 gig". Anyway, has it been confirmed that it was only one DVD9...? that would be low, baldur's gate 1+2+extension is already 8gig, considering the space textures take nowadays, I would feel it normal (considering an equal content) to get a 15+gig file. This being said, time to wait and see...

BG 1 and 2 plus the expansions is going to take up much more space than if they were a single game, like DA:O. You have overlapping game engines, sounds, and art assets that are being counted twice, since a lot of that gets reused between the two games. Even so, the space the game takes up installed is double the two BGs combined, going by the number given by Derek and your number for BG. But we aren't downloading the installed and unpacked game, we're downloading a compressed installation file. If you follow the link to the full reply by Derek, he's replying to someone that was surprised it was fitting on a single disc. Derek says it's the same as Mass Effect, which was a single DVD.

What surprises me about Derek's statement is the use of RAR compression, I would have thought it time to embrace the 7z compression format or some other modern equivalent.
