Who was your default crew?

So in Mass Effect I basically only used Ashley and Wrex. Ever. Like, pretty much every mission. Primarily for combat reasons. I loved Garrus but his tech skills just sucked, I rather just pounded through everything with bullets and biotics.

I have to say ME2 allowed for much more diversity, to really customize your crew depending on the situation and mission, largely thanks to the vastly, vastly improved class build-up. I still had something of a default crew I used, that went with me on the largest part of the missions, though.
Being an Adept myself, I finally got some good use for Garrus and towed him with me to nearly everywhere. From the new characters introduced in ME2 I have to say they did really well on Mordin Solus. I really liked him and he was quite handy in combat, so he was the other side of my primary crew.

Did you really pick your crew depending on the mission, or did you usually pick the same 2 people to go with you?

I have to say I alternated alot, even while playing the same character. Wrex, Garrus, Tali, Kaidan and Ashley all had their place in my team, the only one I had difficulty with was Liara, while I could say it was because she sucked or whatever but if I am honest I'm not sure why she just never fit for me: as a pure biotic specialist she should have just fit like just like a pure tech or pure combat specialist did, but... Playstyle is my only answer, somehow she just didn't fit.

I alternated quite a bit, but Tali was probably my most heavily used squadmate after I recruited her. She's easy to get along with personality wise, and her combat drone is actually very useful. My second most used is probably Samara. Purely for aesthetic reasons, I typically try to take characters with full pressure suits on any mission that has a hazardous atmosphere, because quite frankly it just feels silly to have Jack or Samara standing in a vacuum with exposed skin. Ultimately I can't think of any situations where I would have been handicapped by my particular choice of teammates, freeing me to choose based on taste rather than pure utility.

Main paragon male, ME1, Ashley and Garrus (LI and tech useful guy). Main renegade female, ME1, Liara and Wrex (LI and "muscle"). ME2, Miranda and Garrus (LI and trusted friend), and Miranda and Zaeed (human Cerberus link and human muscle) respectively.

Garrus and Wrex in ME1

Legion (I modified the saves to allow him to be accessed earlier) and Garrus

Legion--wanted to hear dialogue, and badass

Garrus--badass, and liked the character.

ME1: Garrus & Wrex

ME2: Garrus & Thane/Grunt

Needless to say, Garrus is always on my team cause he's the only one I honestly trust and know I can count on to help... I also like having a Krogan on the team, but I like Thane's character and biotic abilities so I alternate.

Wrex and Tali in ME1. Always.

Tried to take Tali when I could in ME2, but she's simply not as useful as other team mates anymore so she got ditched if I knew the mission was going to be hard and have little mechs/shields.

Usually Miranda and Thane or Samara. Against geth and mechs sometimes Tali and Garrus. Sometimes Tali and Miranda or Miranda and Jack (especialy on the Horizon, before Samara and Thane come along) Never Grunt, Mordin or Jacob except for their missions.

God I miss Wrex.

In ME1, my favorite team was by far Wrex and Tali. I used
the other members for acheivements and specific missions, but Wrex and
Tali were just my favorite characters in and out of combat (Sorry,
Garrus).

In ME2 I pretty much used everyone, tailoring the combo
individually for missions. Like, if I know I'll be fighting the Blood
Pack, I'll take Mordin or Zaeed and someone with Warp.
I say that though, and I end up favoring a certain squad. Like, as a Vanguard, my general purpose team
was Thane and Tali. As a Sentinel, I'm using Miranda and Zaeed a lot.

For ME1, Kaidan and Ashley. Kaidan for the powers, Ashley for the brute force. After Virmire, Wrex for brute force.
In ME2, I mixed things up a lot at the lower difficulties, but on Insanity, pretty much Miranda (Warp + Overload = Win) and Zaeed exclusively, later Kasumi instead of Zaeed.

For ME1 it was Wrex and Tali all the time.

For ME2 I used Grunt a lot because I like a powerhouse on my team. :D Didn't really stick with a particular secondary teammember.

ME1 Infiltrator: Garrus and Tali

ME1 Sentinel: Liara and Wrex

I'm just trying to max out one aspect (tech/biotic) and see how it feels

Completely shutting down enemy weapons, techs and biotics with sabotage and damping on all 3 characters (IIRC) was actually pretty fun and effective too

Now in ME2, for the infiltrator I mostly had Miranda and someone else to switch depending on the situation (usually mordin/grunt)

Like others, I alternated a lot too. I think BioWare did a really good job with the team members in ME2 (except for Jacob as I found his abilities replaceable by someone else more powerful). I had a lot of fun mixing and matching with each mission. Here are a few of my teams.

FYI, I use an Infiltrator with Enhanced Cloak, Agent, Incinerate, and Geth Shield Boost. I try to optimize my power cooldown periods.

War Team: For brute force, my war teams can be Grunt + Zaeed, or Grunt + Garrus.
Anti-husk: Usually have Kasumi. I've found Kasumi + Tali/Miranda/Samara all effective anti-husk teams.
General anti-merc: Mordin and Thane. Lethal combination.
Anti-Blue Suns : To get through their shields as well as take advantage of their vulnerability to biotics, I combine Miranda + pretty much everyone else. I have disruptor ammo as well.
Anti-Blood Pack: Zaeed + Jacob worked well for me in Mordin's recruitment mission. Jacob pulls krogan after I take down their armour and Zaeed's grenade burns vorcha to crisps. Miranda + Jack/Thane for their warp. Mordin + Zaeed for incendiary damage.
Anti-Eclipse: Miranda + Jack to get through barriers. Or Miranda/Jack + Mordin/Samara.
Team Illium: Thane + Samara are good as an anti-Eclipse team, I find. And they've been strong as an all-purpose team. Good balance of weapons and substantial biotic power.
Anti-geth: Tali + Legion, although they aren't my optimal team. I've wanted to test out Tali + Garrus with squad AP rounds and area energy drain. Kasumi + Tali also effective. Capitalizing on their biotic vulnerabilities, Miranda + Samara, Garrus + Jack.
Anti-Collector: This one's a tough one for me and I'm still figuring it out. The most effective team I've had for this is Jack + Thane during the first part of the suicide mission. Garrus + Grunt were good on Horizon.

Plainly: I try to mix up the teams as much as possible, but notice that I end up using certain squad setups more than others. In Mass Effect 1, my Infiltrator usually took Garrus and Kaidan as backup. Powers were used liberally, particularly the tech versions.

With amusement: My Adept usually took Liara and Kaidan because I used Lift probably too liberally. But hey, Saren/Sovereign never touched the ground once during the final battle.

With equal amusement: Tali and Legion make a fun pair with their Combat Drones.

With a bit more seriousness: Kasumi has proven a powerful ally.

Slight annoyance: I might not make it a whole day talking like an Elcor.

Garrus and Wrex on ME1. I prefer them over specialist that tend to die more often.  I never use Ashley, will never use her, i find her annoying, she die on Virmire all the time.

In Mass Effect, I used Garrus with fully upgraded tech powers and the Spectre Assault Rifle. To compliment his lack of awesomeness at close range, Tali excelled at close range with a Spectre shotgun and full Electronics and Sabotage.

In Mass Effect 2, I persisted with Garrus and Tali whenever possible. Whenever it were unsuitable to use in the combat situations later on, I was likely to use either Grunt, Zaeed, or Mordin.

Me1 - I used different team mates for each mission, but Liara and Wrex got used most

ME2 - Garrus and Wrex  Grunt for nearly everything regardless of Sheps speciality (I play femsheps as adept or sentinal or infiltrator)

ME1 - Took Tali everywhere due to needing her to hack for me. That was so annoying.

ME2 - Took everyone equally based on my need for that mission. I find it humorous that some people speak about trusting said teammate more than others hence their choice.

I'm currently a ME2 soldier, so even if I just took Jacob "I say shotgun, priiize and die" and Garrus "Oh my f.uckin knees! I can't bend down into cover" with me everywhere I wouldn't have any problem. For some obscure sexually motivated reason. I always try to take two women. With the addition of Kasumi, that has become REALLY easy.

ME 1: My Shep was a vanguard and used Liara/Ashley and Garrus.

ME 2: My Shep switched to Adept so my ideal squad for max rapage was Samara and Thane. But I usually chose different squadmates for specific missions.
