ME1: Kaiden and Liara, because I was a major biotic abuser. I didn't particularly like either of them. I love Wrex and Tali, but it never jazzed well on the battlefield for me. Wrex always seemed to die real quick and it's weird cause I never hear that complaint from anyone else. I only used Garrus to get the achievement, and I'm still missing the achievement with Ashley. It's the only achievement I'm missing with ME1.
ME2: Thane and Garrus and Kasumi for a major portion of the game, depending on what's going on in the mission I swap them around. Before recruiting Thane, I don't swap out Garrus, and heavily use him with Zaeed or Jack or Kasumi. Before getting either Garrus and Jack, it's Zaeed and Jacob, but I just use Jacob just till I get Garrus on the team and I always go for him first. Zaeed and Jacob are my least favorite, but it works so there. Garrus dies easily like Wrex did for me in ME1. Half the time I feel like I'm only using med-gel to revive him, but if I plan things right Garrus stays alive and kicks a lot of ass
I haven't really used Grunt much at all, he is one that I sometimes forget I have. Legion the same though I think if I got it sooner I probably would really abuse it. I was so looking forward to recruiting Legion long before the game was released and it was even confirmed that the mysterious stalker Geth named Legion was recruitable. Disappointingly, there isn't enough time to use Legion unless I want to lose some people on the Suicide Mission and I really don't.
Samara and Tali I like to talk more to then use. If I'm feeling it, I'll swap Samara in place of Jack, but I've got more favoritism for Jack then I do Samara.
I used to abuse the crap out of Mordin till I realized Thane had biotics. For some reason between the trailer and then recruiting Thane in the game, I forgot and never used Thane on my first couple of playthroughs. Not that Mordin is totally useless now, I do use him when I know I'm going to have problems with enemy armor, like with the three YMIRs, and I combine his incinerate with Thane and my Shepard's warps.
Miranda seems to die the most often out of all the characters whenever I try to use her, so I tend to hardly ever use her.
If I'm forgetting someone, it's probably because I never use them.
I can fly through ME1 without every bothering with the rest of the crew and their levels, forgeting to give them updated armor and weapons and everything.
ME2 requires a heck of a lot of mixing and matching when it comes down to it. Especially on insanity, you have to actually think about it before you bring someone with you that will be absolutely useless. I think the refined skill system creates this.
