i did the same in ME 1 i thought the blue chick (liara spelt that wrong) was tali so when i found that i could romance tali i was like forget you ashLandline wrote...
My story was similar to yours except I completely forgot about Ash when I found out Tali was a romance option, which was in-game for me.

So I decided to stay with Ash going into ME2, and was interested in exploring alternate options other than Miranda, who seemed like just a regular human.
Then I realized a few things:
A) Ash failed too hard on Horizon, loyalty gone. It would have been different if she didn't go from "YOU'RE A GOD!" to "YOU SUCK!" in ten seconds.
Miranda's evolves and intertwines nicely with her overall story. She opens up to you without becoming a dfferent person. The whole thing seemed more like a natural progression and less like a "hey, so Kasumi and Kelly just told me you want all this."
Anywhoo. So yeah, That's how I switched from Ash to Miranda on my first ME2 play through.
I did do loyal one (meh), a Jack one (okay), and a Tali one (quite good actually!); I stand by my original decision, but I'm glad I played through all of them.

Mass Effect 2 has so many romance options D:
I'm not saying it's a bad thing - it's really very good for the story that pretty much every squadmate is reasonably approachable as a romance option. It's just that I had a very hard time staying loyal to Ashley. xD
Being a male Shepard, at first I wanted to hit on Miranda. Through some reading up I did on the ME wikia I found out, though, that if you don't romance anyone in the game, you would stare at Ashley's picture before the final battle etc, indicating some sort of follow-up for ME3 (damn you BioWare you better give me one). Decided that was the path I was gonna choose. Little did I know that there were so many interesting romances to pursue in ME2.
Jack came around. Now, this is a girl I'd usually run like hell from IRL, but I read a bit about the story arc of the romance and I really, really wanted to give her a chance. Just, to feel love. And stuff.
Then came Tali. Well dammit. Checking a video of the romance I felt so tempted to romance her. Way, way cute. Bit of a clumsy weirdo. Kind of girl I'd run towards IRL.
Miranda wasn't interesting anymore at this point - I just wanted to bang her ingame for her looks. Storywise Jack or Tali were way more interesting.
I didn't really like Samara. Even though it's not a fully explorable romance option, I wouldn't have pursued her even if she was.
Rejecting Miranda was relatively easy - Jack was uncomfortable and Tali just made me feel bad. xD I just wanted to stay loyal to Ashley. Adds more to the story IMO. Due to the amount of characters in ME2 I felt that the individual ones weren't worked out as thoroughly as ME's ones. Didn't really get to know them as well as Ashley so I figured I'd stick with her, seeing as how she's nice and the romance story was quite fulfilling.
How did you experience all the romances in ME2?
With a great deal of FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU---------
"Hey, I think you're sort of ok in an average and very platonic way."
"OH SHEPARD I LOVE YOU!"

"I like to know my crew, Lieutenant. More specifically I grew up in Earth's urban blight, signed on young and served mostly garrison duty. I don't have a lot of exposure to human biotics; tell me about your experiences."
"Sure thing, Commander. Want to see my genitals now, or shall we go to your quarters?"
../../../images/forum/emoticons/pinched.png
<_<
"Dismissed, Lieutenant!"
And why all of the ME2 "full" LIs are toxic to her (either literally or merely psychologically - nobody wants to be a more realistic goal than the person their partner actually wants) I'll never know.
At least there's somebody she can have a nice meal with...

In ME2, Tali was a crush for Shepard with all her cuteness and mystery... But, hmm, I dunno, Miranda was more "enjoyable".
Anyway, back to ME1, another playtrough, kept Ash alive this time, and I say: the best "romantic" character is the Gunnery Chief, she's like a mix between Tali and Miranda, with some poetry.
Even after her ****ing on Horizon you still get a mail form her making apologies for her behavior and reinforcing how much she likes you. And the scene of the "faithful" Shepard looking at her portrait before the suicide mission is very sweet.

Never chose a ME1 romance. It was a choice between a naive person and a rather strange blue person, and at the time it made more sense to save the Galaxy.

Also easily cast as "between one of your subordinates and an alien teenager". Shepard's like 30, and commanding officer of an Alliance frigate on detached service with the Citadel. It's just inappropriate.
Now, on the civilian SR-2 working with a paramilitary intelligence agency, all bets could be off.

More like an alien 10-year-old. *gag*. God, I hate that "I'm barely legal!" vibe.

When I first played ME2, I had full intentions on staying loyal to Ash with my "canon" Vanguard Shepard. And then I met her on Horizon. Despite my perfectly good reasons (IMHO) for why I work WITH Cerberus (not FOR) that ****ing of hers really got on my nerves. I understand the reason and emotional hurricane she had going on, but her reasons were still so wrong and totally uncalled for. So yes, she could go to hell for all I care. And then Tali made a move on me err my Shep and rest is history.

Not sure I'd call Liara "an alien 10-year-old"... I mean, as "young" as she may consider herself to be in comparison to other asari, she's still been around for over a hundred years. Besides, that would imply that she has been doing scientific research, alone on uncharted worlds (and apparently capable of defending herself with lethal force) since she was "five".
Just because asari live ten to twenty times longer than humans doesn't necessarily mean they take ten to twenty times longer to develop. To me her outlook seems quite a bit more adult than, say, Tali's (or, frankly, even Garruses' for that matter). There's a difference between being immature and just not quite experienced.
Also, I think Liara is in fact the only romance interest who actually comes forward talking about the romance, rather than being more or less "pushed" into it.

It's called hyperbole. The instant she said "I'm considered barely more than a child", as far as I'm concerned, she'd acknowledged that she's there to cater to the just-18, inexperienced virginal little girl-loving crowd and I find that incredibly repulsive. I couldn't stomach having her around let alone romancing her for a variety of reasons that I won't go into here, but I will say neither I nor my boyfriend could get past the creepy 'little girl' vibe from her.

But then i started femshep playthrough and chatted with Garrus. "Wut, i can romance him too? :O" And i romanced him too lol. Those other girls and boys i didn't like for some reason. They weren't so familiar i guess.
And when i saw Ash or Kaidan i was like "F- those boring idiots again.."

Well, I dunno, I personally took that whole "she is 'only' 106" as a kind of a joke... guess if you really look for that kind of vibe you can find it, if some might look at a character who's over a hundred years old, holds PhDs in archaeology and ass-whoopery, and is voiced by a 30 year old VA, and still feel like they're molesting a little girl, can't do much about that... Frankly, she doesn't even quite seem to actually act like that kind of girl, at least to me (again, that's more like Tali); and I certainly wouldn't go as far as saying that she's just there specifically to cater to that kind of crowd... But then of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Liara - The awkward and naive scientist
Tali - The adorkable tech-girl
Miranda - The loyalist/alpha female
Jack - The little spitfire with heart
Samara - The wise but sexy madame/sophisticate
Kasumi - The cheeky ninja girl/kunoichi
Morinth - The femme fatale/seductress
Kelly - The "anything goes" girl
I'm done. Carry on.

I also agree that the games seems to be have a bit too many romantic options to the point that it is over saturated, almost a gimmick.
