What the hell is "emo" music doing in Dragon Age Origins?

I hate the band, I hate the genre and I hate the fact that such **** was put in the game.

Mass Effect is an example of licensed music used correctly during credits. They picked something that is a) enjoyable to listen to, B) fits the theme of the game, and c) meshes with the existing soundtrack nicely. In Dragon Age, it seems more like EA wanted an excuse to include it so that their licensing deal wouldn't go to waste... or maybe Inon Zur's contract had run out and they couldn't get a theme done.

Who knows? Either way, bad choice all around. If they were going to pick some licensed music, they could have at least used something folky, or neoclassical.

That is true, but this is a video game and there is a lot of "younger" people who are playing it.  Dare to be different, DAO has great music, but something different is not a bad -- I liked the music in the game and Mars. True, the style may not fit with the rest of the music in the game, but it is the credits and plus the music appears close to the end of the list -- think of it as an easter egg.  Like the old saying goes: One's  man trash is another man's art.  So enjoy the "art"B)

I didn't recognize the song or know the name of the band, but I thought the music worked very nicely in the opening. Sure I mostly listen to harder stuff, but that doesn't mean that all other kinds of music are bad or useless. Sounded right to me. It's kind of funny that you're so familiar with a band whose style you dislike, though. ;)

Read the lyrics.

Do you think any of the themes in the song fit the story?

BTW, I like the classical-esque baroque scores that are present in most of the game, but I don't have any problem with modern music in the credits.

I've read the lyrics and I find them inspirationless meaningless crap.

These lyrics fit the game better and the song sounds a whole lot better and less emo too: www.youtube.com/watch

I'm not saying that is the perfect song for Dragon Age Origins, but atleast it fits a million times better than 30 Seconds to Mars.

That's because I liked 30 Seconds to Mars back in the days when I was younger and when they wheren't coplete crappy sell-outs.

30 Seconds to Mars used to be good you know. Now they're sell-outs that make crappy emo-ish music.

Here, listen to this, this is when 30 Seconds to Mars was still a decent band.

Emo... 30 Seconds to Mars? I don't know about that one. I guess it's too subjective to really say. I personally don't see them that way. HIM yes, My Chemical Romance no. Why is it in the credits you ask?

1. The lyrics are very apropos to the situation. The only way it could possibly be more applicable is the mention of Darkspawn and Alistair.

2. The band is popular. Right before the complete album release. The music is still fresh in your minds. It inspires you to question who that was, kind of thing if you didn't know.

3. It is credit music. If someone refused to buy a game based on the design decision of "credit" music would just sound overly ridiculous. Now if the overall game was plagued by it, I could understand your position, but this has no affect on gameplay.

I'm sorry you feel it is a poor choice but I believe complaining about the credit music is... well finicky.

People have complained about almost everything on this forum. It seems to be the biggest trent.
Nobody complained about the credits music and I really didn't like to hear 30 Seconds to Mars after an epic fantasy adventure, so there you have it, a topic complaining about the credits music. Another one to scratch of your list. I wonder what the next complaint will be.

Should have had a bagpipe rap medley outro for the ending credits.

Very true indeed. Probably the most correct statement I heard all day. But I was trying to display the other side of the argument. I apologize for the last statement in my post. We are, collectively, a finicky bunch.

Really? I quite like the song .__.

And besides, you've just saved ferelden from the Archdemon - The lyric's -do- suit that moment imho.

"A warning to the people

The good and the evil

This is war

To the soldier, the civillian

The martyr, the victim

This is war"

"To the right

To the left

We will fight to the death

To the edge of the earth

It's a brave new world

From the last to the first"

"

It's the moment of truth and the moment to lie

The moment to live and the moment to die

The moment to fight, the moment to fight, to fight, to fight, to fight"

'Specially:

"A brave new world

The war is won

The war is won

A brave new world"

It just fits, not whilst you're playing, but it's good credit's music to draw the entire experience to close.

I skipped the credits so no idea what the hell is going on here. Did they really put that song in there?

This title of this thread was by far more emo then the song.

I for one liked the song. Since when did the end credits music have to fit with the time the game is set in? I actually think i prefer hearing this song over one from, say, Two steps from hell or Gladiator. It gives you somewhat more of a happier feel.

But the best music would definitely be something from ratatat. Shiller or Cherry perhaps. I would literally pass out of the epicness.

They should get Nightwish in the somewere in a future DA, just saying.

Anywho, I didn't notice there was a song in the end-credits, its been ages since iv'e beat the game. Concidering I may beat it this weekend, I will have to keep my ears open.

More on topic, I tend to be pretty open about music in games, for instance, the song in the mass effect credits was so good, I actually bought it and still listen to it. I usually hate anything that's not hard-rock or metal.

I think everyone is misunderstanding the point that the OP is making. He's saying that some random pop music doesn't fit with Dragon Age not that he'd rather have Chet Atkins or whatever playing instead. Why wouldn't the credits feature an awesome classical or orchestral score like the rest of the game? Why put in some music that some may like and others dislike when you can just as easily put in a score that fits with the rest of the game? To this point I agree.

well for some odd reason i just never heard 30 seconds to mars this is war play in my game maybe because i have the ps3 version
best answer i can think of
i heard some violin **** and the main menu music

simple fix have an external music source play during the credits?

seriously I need to play power metal when playing DA just fits with the fantasy setting of the game, but again that is just me

As for the "emo" thing I am pretty sure 30 Seconds To Mars sounds nothing like this

Nothing against 30 Seconds to Mars, but THIS is the way to go. But then again, pretty much everything by these guys would work well.

Lmao! Thats great!

30 Seconds to Mars isn't emo and is something I actually like.  I enjoyed it well enough. . .

But for sure Within Temptation, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica a band like that would do a better song.

The brave new world of theirs is making my skin crawl. Now Nightwish or Bathory in the credits, that would be a different level...

Is there any way of changing the credits music?

ITT: dudes arguing over stupid stuff.

The credit music is there because the devs wanted it to be. The lyrics or form or genre of the song have dick all to do with why it's present.

I don't understand, though. Seriously, the music used in the credits is now a point of argument? Seriously? I'd put this down to just being a one time only thing but I've seen the same stuff in the Mass Effect forums. I just can't get my head around it. It just seems like the most arbitrary thing anyone could ever point out about the game, or any game for that matter.
