I found the two dragons that I killed so far very easy (on nightmare). Here's what I do: my tank (Alistair) confronts the dragon in melee, my two mages move some distance away. Alistair uses Taunt, then a mage casts Force field on him. I kill the dragon simply with my mages firing with their staffs, and whenever Force Field wears off, Alistair uses Taunt again (to make sure the dragon keeps attacking him) and one mage renews the Force Field. It almost feels like cheating, I hardly get a scratch.

Many would say you ARE cheating.

No more cheating than healing as far as I'm concerned, I imagine alot of people would scoff but it seems like a perfectly valid tactic to me, not to mention sensible.

I agree. Force Fielding your tank is lame. Just open the console and type "kill" and save yourself some trouble.  No need to waste your time exploiting some horrible AI.

Here are some tactics for taking on the High Dragon.

1. Force Field the tank after drawing aggro (Cheese Tactic)

2. Micro-manage healer on tank especially after being grabbed

3. Use Pets and snipe with archers

4. Use Shale (problem is all DLC makes the game way too easy)

5. Greater Warmth balm (kind of a no brainer)

6. Arcane Warrior with shimmering shield, Miasma

7. a legit Two Hander with indominatable activated

8. any well built DPS rouge with good poison can finish the dragon from the flank when the dragon's health is down 30% and the tank has aggro

9. Vulnerability hexes and lightning or ice work nice

10. a zillion traps (kind of a waste when they do miracles on doorways and metal shards are in limited supply)

11. the bomb rainbow (throwing about 5 forms of bombs in 2 seconds at the same location preferrably with two - three rogues)

12. Fire resistant gear (like the drake armor)

13. Armor piercing tactics (shattering shot, sunder armour, telekinetic weapons)

14. Spread out your team like a cross, a never have a member behind the tank and/or in front of the dragon unless they have fire resistance

15. Top armor makes sense (Juggernaut, Blood Dragon, knight commander plate, Felon's) for your tank or DPS

16. Typical lineup is Alistair the tank getting aggro ... Leliana using bow to cripple, shatter at a range ... healer curing Alistair or using force field on grabs .. you can DPS at range if rouge, flank if 2 hander or hex and bolt/ice damage as a mage.

Well, I have to agree that this tactic is kind of lame, and I can understand you criticism. But then again, every strategy is about playing more clever than the AI, so it is about exploiting the stupidity of the AI. Personally, I don't want to restrict myself and not use certain tactics, just because they are "too clever" for the AI. I think Bioware should make the AI better.

Actually, I think the whole threat system is not good, because it is a system with the sole purpose of exploiting the AI by making it attack the worst target, that is your tank, who you can protect with forcefield, but also with strong armor and healing spells. It would be much better to have a smart AI that tries to target you weakest spot, the same that you do as a player.
