I just bought ME 1 (EA value games version) and installed it on XP SP3, patched to 1.02.
I had a borrowed version on this computer very briefly just to take a look. That version didn't have the problem I'm having now:
When I try to create a custom profile, I get to the face reconstruction okay, but then the trouble starts. If I cycle presets, it eventually freezes and nothing can be done, clicking on 'back' or 'finalize' doesn't do anything (it is highlighted, though) and all I can do is kill the task. If I skip the presets and go to the next option in the list, I get to the next screen, where I find that whichever setting I try to change, they all change only the first one. And then it eventually freezes. Rinse and repeat.
I can start the game with a quick start character. But once in game, I get the same problem I am also having in the character creation at some points in the process: Buttons won't react to mouse clicks (again, they highlight). I need to press 'enter' to proceed - I somehow doubt this is how it's meant to be? Does anybody have an idea? My attempts with the search function didn't turn up anything useful.
Oh, and I can't figure out how to register the game. The link I found here http://social.biowar...index/1335293/1 is loading to death but never goes anywhere.

It sounds like you may need to uninstall and reinstall the game. Make sure the older installation you borrowed is completely wiped too. You might want to do a registry sweep using "CCleaner" before you reinstall it.

Thanks for your quick reply You're right, my installation is jinxed. I can tell because I also have a Win7 and ME installed on it to see if it'd run on it and it does (only I don't really use Win7, so...). Right, always find the most obvious and embarrassing possibility, like "did you push the power button?", haha.
Only, when I uninstalled ME, I got a wierd message about de-authorization of my machine and how it was impossible to do so... did I unknowingly catch myself another SuckaRom? Argh! And do I need to do something about that?
Oh well, reinstallation is running, I'll see if it worked, keep your fingers crossed for me

So, after reinstall I was finally able to create a custom character and I thought the mouse issue was gone, too. I could even esc my way through the half dozen splash screens. But only the first time, after that they were un-escapable again. How odd is that? Fixed that issue with a mod. But the mouse-click-doesn't-take problem was back again, too. Accessing codex entries is a real pain in the backside, because I need to highlight them with the mouse and then hit enter twice. Same in the main menu, highlight and hit enter. Is that supposed to be that way? Not really, is it? 
And screenshots don't work either. There are bitmaps in my screenshot folder (after editing the BIOInput.ini), but they are empty (drawing failed). And alt tabbing doesn't work at all, game dies if I do that, so using the print key the old fashioned way doesn't work, either.
