Gotta be hard to hold a gun that way.

One thumb to hold the gun, one finger to keep it balanced, and one finger to fire.

Because if they had more fingers then us we would be less superior.

Asari have there mind powers, Turians their... military brain? Salarian's there hyperactivity and brains, and Krogan... Krogan got da beef man.

Humans get 2 extra fingers. I believe we win.

Same reason humans have an extremely low strength to mass ratio ... 'cos it's not necessary.

3 fingers = easier to animate. I'm just surprised there's not an abundance of moustaches in the ME universe... ;o

Why do Humans and Asari have five fingers? Don't all those extra digits get tangled up when trying to type or when handeling something small?

Even a lot of old-style Human computing interfaces (mouses, mice?) seem designed for three fingers. (one finger to hold/steer, two for the buttons)

I remember reading something when I was a kid in one of my dad's old-fashioned paper issues of OMNI magazine (look it up if you've never heard of it... I'm prehistoric) that talked about how man might evolve as a species over the next couple of million years, and one of the things theorised was that we have two digits that we don't use anymore - they're just part of us needed a spatulate, broad hand from being arboreal and not descended from oddball treeclimbers like sloths. As our technology becomes smaller, more easily manipulated, the onus on the two 'spare' digits will reduce. Less stress on the hand, less load to bear... the theorised outcome would be a taller, willowy human with more pronounced thumbs, primary and secondary digits... give it another forty generations or so, and the last two digits could fade away to nothing.

Or hey, it looks alien without making extraterrestrial technology impractical to handle with five fingers - you choose :D

so what you are saying is.. that aliens with 3 fingers would have 0 skillz in comp games? Ironic that they are in one.

1. To make them more alien
2. Because hands are hard to make and animate properly, so if they don't have the default shape, it's hard to mess up
3. Because they're hardly necessary. (There aren't many actions where more than 3 fingers are required)

Probably not though (and 2000 years is a rather shortt ime frame, evolution-wise) becasue while there is no pressure to have 5 fingers, there is no pressure to lose them either - a 3-fingered human is not going to be more successful at passing on his or her genes, so there is no reason for a three-fingered mutation to out compete the existing 5. This reasoning is why, for example, the majority of animals that live in very dark locations are blind rather than eye-less: the eyes atrophy, but there isn't actually enough environmental pressure to actually get rid of them, an eyeless version of the creature desn't do well enough to replace his eye'd kin.

Ehm, I'm saying the exact opposite. I'm insinuating that a three-fingered species might see having five fingers as a liability.

Also, my current mouse looks like Mordin, Tali or Garrus would be perfectly comfortable using it. (you grip it on the left side with your thumb and your palm on the back/top/right and there are two nicely large buttons on the top. With two buttons on the "thumb" side and a mouse-wheel between the buttons) Maybe Logitech employs Salarians? Posted Image

Funny thing is the gene for six fingers is dominant in human, but it has been pretty much bred out of society. A few cases pop up here and there.

true gamers have lots of buttons on their mouse and need more fingers.

I could never imagine doing something like arena with only 3 fingers- so many binds and to little fingers at it is! :P

This.
Mass Effect 2 is an extremely simplistic game, 'cos 8 hotkeys can't possibly be enough for a 1337 gamer.

It's actually quite simple

1 Finger - nub, useless. alternately tentacle, more useful but impractical

2 Fingers - Lobster, difficult to hold things

3 Fingers - Enough fingers to resemble a human hand while being sufficiently alien, can easily grasp and operate fire arms

4 Fingers - Simpsons did it

5 Fingers - Too Human

6 Fingers - Would look silly.

So by process of elimination Bioware gave most aliens 3 fingers.
