i'd like to give the player a timer that when it ends would make an area transition. any ideas on how this could be accomplished?

Let's suppose that the timer is started in a conversation. Attach a script to the corresponding line in order to create and send a delayed custom event to the current area. In the current area script catch your custom event and make the area transition. You have the code in the previous link.
