I have the Steam version of the game. It was working perfectly fine the last time I played it, which was in January right before ME2 came out. Now it is doing this black screen freeze during the loading of the game... again. I fixed this in November when it was giving me problems at that time. I have tried literally everything, and I mean everything, I have read in these forums and the archived forums on the ME main site. I don't know why this game is so hard to get working...

System Specs:
OS: Windows Vista 64-bit
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (OC'ed @ 3.0GHz, stable)
MoBo: Asus Maximus Formula (All drivers and firmware updated to latest versions)
Video: nVidia GTX 280 (OC'ed lightly, stable)(197.45 Drivers)
Memory: 8GB DDR2 1066
Sound: Razer Megalodon 7.1 Surround Sound Headset (2.12 Firmware)
DirectX 11(Feb 2010)

Some official help from Bioware would really be appreciated. This is obviously a pretty rampant problem considering that the forums are on fire about this. How about a v1.03 patch? I would just like to be able to play one of my favorite games of all time.

Bioware does not have any tech support department.  EA is the official support source.  You are in a User to User forum here, exactly as desribed in the forum subtitle.

Chris Priestley's Stickie told you

This forum is for fans and customers of Mass Effect 1, both for the PC
version and the Xbox 360 version, to share help and assist each otehr
with technical issues.

Please remember that official game support for Mass Effect 1 is
shared by Electronic Arts and Microsoft.

If you have a Mass Effect 1 PC issue, official support can be found
through EA Customer support here:
http://support.ea.co...y=0&p_redirect=

If you have a Mass Effect 1 Xbox 360 issue, details on official
support from Microsoft can be found here:
http://masseffect.bi...box360.html#int.

Please try to help one another with problems, but remember the
best way to ensure accurate support is to contact the official
support provided.

If this is the same comp that was playing it fine before, I'd look at updated drivers as the first culprit. Nvidia had a long string of ME-incompatible drivers in the past, and maybe something got borked again lately.

What was the problem/fix the last time this happened?

That's the bad part... I don't remember what I did to get it working. I do know for certain that I didn't have to rollback my graphics drivers, or any drivers for that matter, and that I wasn't having any of the audio problems that people were having that didn't allow the game to launch. I tried rolling back my graphics drivers this time, as I stated in my first post I have tried everything including this, and that didn't fix the problem. I have deleted the bioengine.ini multiple times and have yet for it to create an ini file that I can locate anything different from the last time. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the game through Steam at least 5 times. I have had Steam verify the integrity of the install more times that I have reinstalled the game. I am at a loss right now. I really wish I could remember what I did to get it working.

I took a look on Tweakguides.com to see if they had info on what could be causing this since I use this site for any info if I feel like tweaking the settings in a game past what the in-game settings allow. I however haven't checked in the Tweakguide forums... I will have to get on that now that I've thought about it.

I will try to remember what I did that fixed it the last time. Once I do remember, if I do, then I will try and see if it works again. If it does I will post what I did.

SUCCESS!!! I got the game running perfectly again. Launches everytime with and without UAC turned on. Okay, so let me list how to get it to run again.

1.) Go to http://connect.creat...s/AllItems.aspx and download the OpenAl Installer for Windows.
2.)Unzip the installer and run oalinst.exe.
3.)Go to C:/Windows/System32 and copy the OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll files.
4.)Place these two files in your Mass Effect/Binaries folder.
5.)Overwrite the existing files in the directory.
6.)Enjoy!

Now remember. I am running Vista 64-bit, the latest nVidia drivers(197.45), and DirectX 11. I also have the Steam version of the game installed, though this should not have any impact on this fix whatsoever. This worked on Vista 64-bit but I do not know if this will work on other OS's, like Windows 7. If this does work on another operating system make sure to post so that our fellow players can enjoy the game again too!
