Is there a save editor for mass effect 1 or some way to modify the save? I want to play the first game just for the story, so I don't want to scan planets or do all secondary missions.
save editor?

I don't know of an editor. But you could just play the story and the grab a save from the mass effect save site.

On the masseffectsaves site, if you scroll down a little you'll see 'TOOLS' in which you'll see "gibbed's save editor".
That should solve most of your scanning and credits issues.
Quick edit: http://masseffect.wi...i/Upgrade_Guide that'll tell you what side missions you need to do for any upgrades and when you can get access to them.

Hmmm scanning a planet is ME1 is pretty much just pressing one button and youre are done.
The amount of resources you gather in ME1 is not the same as ME2 and not for the same reason.
Gathering minerals in ME1 is just for a side quest, optional. Not for upgrades.
The only tedium people refer to in ME1 would be the Mako and exploration. It is just a wheeled tank that you drive around a large area of a planet looking for more minerals, bunkers, and other goodies. It is more interactive than planet scanning in ME2.
