Why is Shale so fragile?

Can anyone give me tips on how to build and use Shale? It is of course very tempting to use her as a tank because of her size and so. Problem is, though, that she drops dead within 10 seconds if more than 2 enemies attack her at once (for instance the skeletons in the werewolf ruins). She is also surprisingly easy to knock down and uses an eternity to get back on her feet. She is also so very, very slow and has an abysmal hit rate, which also makes her ineffective as dps. The only time I really felt she was useful was in the fight against Gaxkang. I put her in Stone Aura which reduced Gaxkang's magical attacks to the degree that the fight became easy. Ironically, Shale is most useful when passive! So, what am I doing wrong? I've tried concentrating solely on her strength as well as dexterity. Should I try pumping constitution to the max to make her a good tank?

Sorry for an answer you won´t like, but to make Shale a good tank you should choose another tank imo.

Ok, I suspected that. But I've also tried to concentrate on her damage output without particular success. So what is she actually useful as?

I didn't use shale much except as a sort of decoy. Baddies would attack her and then I'd walk up to the fight and backstab them all. mwahaha

So yeah, all of her points went into constitution. I play the game in a weird way...

Shale is most useful at low levels when warriors don't have enough dexterity or gear to make a big difference. Also, she's better as a constitution tank against dragons and ogres than anything else. You'll find she's pretty useful against spiders, werewolves, and wolves, too, since she can't be overwhelmed.

Ok, seems like constitution is the way to go. Thanks for the tips.

The fact that her usefulness diminishes really bums me out because I love having her around for all the pithy one liners.

Getting Shayle's str and con to 38 so i could equip brilliant stones then putting the rest of her points in dex worked pretty well for me. i prefer a sword and board warrior for tanking because you have more options as far as talents/sustainables go, but that approach made her pretty efficent when i want a change in pace.

To spec Shale as a tank you must have the typical warrior tank talents taunt, precise striking, threaten etc. To set her up as a tank you need the following talents from her tree, Stone Heart, Bellow, regeneratin burst and i can not remember the last one, there are 4 total in that line. Also spec her with a bit more dexterity i try and keep Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution all equal, when she levels i will add one point to each.

Shale is a good tank if specced right, she will not mitigatge damage like a sword and board, will but she is immune to overpower and grabs which a sword and board is not, it is a trade off. I like Shale the best for fights where the mobs are dragons, ogres, or mobs with overpower.

I hope this helps.

Assuming PC ver. you could DL the mod below and give Shale the neccessary Constitution boost to better portray the solid stone golem or tank shale could be.

Unless of course cheating is not an option.:P

Excatly.

I used Shale this way on my second playtrhough, and found him eminently useful as a tank. With the "stone heart" line of tallents, in addition to threaten, he becomes the best NPC to attract attention away from your "squishy" chars, like the mage I played last time. :)

I actually didn't use the other Shale tallents at all - only the stone heart line tallents, and basic warrior tallents. I had the tactics set up so that Shale would always have the stone heart active. I think Shale got "killed" in battle only twise or three times during the whole game.

I concentrated on dexterity at first, spending a few points on strenght, and only later added constitution. That worked out pretty well, though I could have switched to boosting constitution a bit earlier, as some of the high-end large crystals have a high constitution requirement. (38, I think.) I only got to use those near the very end.

Yes, bit of an understatement? LOL. And thanks for the rest of your tips. I will experiment more. I am not giving up on her! Shale is cool and I want to have her in my party and not just as a statue in the camp. Quake is probably the talent I have found most useful until now, but the problem is the friendly fire. PS: I am on the 360, so no mods available...

I think the best tank build also contains the aura-line.

After successfully getting the aggro, turn on the aura and all team-member benifit.

Honestly, Shale is very versatile. In Rock Mastery mode, she's much like another mage -Hurl rock is basically fireball with all of the damage upfront instead of half impact half over time, Earthen Grasp is pretty much just better than Mass Paralyze, since the trade off of range for no cast time is more than worth it, and Rock Barrage is simply Earthquake+Damage.

As a tank her biggest downside is lack of knockdown immunity, but she does make up for that with immunity to all of the other stuff that will tear you apart.

Stoneheart, max constitution and nature crystals are usually the best for tanking.

personally I only use her for the deep roads/anvil of the void as she has several dialog options after that pending on what char Im playing Im the tank or Alistair is the tank

I play on the Modded Nightmare dif and she always falls like a rock and way to fast even when some of her benefits it just doesn't out weigh her weaknesses

Plus I hate the stomping, makes sense to hear it but after a while you almost want to mute volume since you have to run alot in this game ;-)

If you purchase a new copy of the game, it's going to be behind the booklet on a square of cardboard, but if you bought a used copy, the codes have probably already been used.

well the way nature almost all the time tends to form most types of shale .
ends up being i close relation to hard cystal but instead forms in a layer configuration
that is most affected by shear force. It will always give up its bond rather quickly
with any number of layers per resulting specimen for both pieces from the seperation.
And has been known for an average unit to split into multiple single clones of itself
anywhere from 30 to 50 of said clones making it ideal for many applications.
Mostly where strength is not a high requirment or need. so there you go pretty clear huh.
its without a form  as this is 100 %  made from  cow or bull patties thats right bull **** .
Sorry it sounded kind of real didnt it ? but all made up to sound workable

Shale is very versatile, it's quite easy to pick up both her tank and dps talents, if you are only using her for one role you aren't utilizing her strengths imo. She makes a good damage sponge tank at lower levels before you spec her out completely, late game I keep her mostly in her damage stance, only switching to tank mode for the first half or so of the fight if there are a lot of mobs. Hard for mobs to do much damage when they disappear in a red mist as soon as they get to her. If you are using a low dps party I can see how she would fall short compared to a sword and board though.
