Kim Stolz revealed how the system actually works a couple months ago:

I've failed then patched it up by switching my class skill to the one which increases your paragon/renegade.

Also, through the game, as much as possible, always choose the paragon or renegade choice (depending on which way you're going). Every time you don't, you lose % of possible paragon/renegade and that's what it checks. It's a lousy system, becuase it forces you to go one way and not choose neutral options, but it is what it is. ( I preffered the ME1 system in this regard.)

Using Gibbed's save editor,I found that it takes a minimum of about 1200 P/R points to regain either Miranda/Jack's loyalty. And why in HELL did you pick Jack?!I mean, she's friggin' USELESS in combat(only one LOKI mech was need to take Jack out on Hardcore, while Miranda needed about 4),and she's NOT hot.Unlike Miranda. And she isn't cute like Tali.Jeez man,you f$*ked it up.

it's nearly impossible to paragon your way out of that argument. it's designed to be easier for higher renegade. the only way to get it i've found is to have an ME1 import with heavy paragon or to pretty much paragon your way through the entire game up until that point. i try to make sure i have 80% paragon w/ the 100% spec before going into miri's loyalty mission. this means doing everyone else first except legion/IFF and choosing all paragon options throughout. then when you finish the mission you should have enough. if not there's no way to patch it up that i've found.

p.s. i've also found it's extremely hard to use renegade in tali/legions argument. had like 80% w/ an import and still wasn't enough. i think miranda's was designed to be easier for renegades and tali's easier for paragons

I play 50/50 paragon/renegade, most of the game having half a bar higher renegade.

I CAN make the paragon check to break up the miranda/jack argument (but I always choose renegade anyway), if I do both their loyalty missions before the collector ship.

Note that I have +190 to both from my ME1 import, as well as +100% from my passive (can retrain for it, I guess .. if I'm playing the +70% option).

Well I have played 6 or 7 times now and have always picked the Paragon option in the Jack/Miranda Fight, I have never failed that check, but I think I had Miranda's Loyal mission done before doing Jacks Loyal mission everytime. the last 2 times, even with the same selsctoin on the final boss Mordin always dies now not sure why.

Its important to leave your heavy hitters to hold the line with mordin. this means grunt garrus  and zaeed(all loyal). best bet is to leave those three guys at least to ohld the line and take squishies like tali jack and miri or even mordin with you. ive had non loyal sqadiies survive that fight as long as you got tanks with them.

I'm pretty sure grunt and zaeed are the two best guys to hold the line. those two guys with loyalty should keep everyone alive

Decibelle I had the same problem. I had a full paragon meter and I still couldn't convince her.

Bioware had the bright idea that having too many renegade points makes you unable to use charm. :l

Well, in their defense, being a complete and utter dick does preclude such ability.

But then Paragon and Renegade are not totally different gauges... we're back to Light Side/Dark Side.  Not that this is my understanding of how it works... though choosing Renegade usually means giving up on Paragon points.  Some are hidden... like bypassing an interrupt and waiting for an opportunity to use a paragon.  The game apparently counts not-seen paragon choices against you too.

That said, I don't see the point in the Miranda patch-up... if you can't make the initial check it doesn't seem like you can ever catch up to use the patch-up option.

I found when I imported my character over from ME1 I was maxed out paragon and I had no problem getting both Jack and Miranda to chill out. It is the option that is when the have the conflict in Miranda's office. On a side note before I played ME1 I had I was just screwed with Jack and I couldn't get her loyalty. It is kind of slick of Bioware making you buy the first game to help with some of the issues you will face in future games.

It's best to always send mordin back to the ship
