AMD Turion X2 2.2 GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570
4 GB of RAM
Just got Mass Effect yesterday, and the game runs completely smooth on medium - high setting, 1366 x 768.
But 5 - 10 min after I start to play, the game begins to skip frames and slow down, and the audio stutters badly. This goes on i about 20+ secs. and then; smooth playing again. 2 - 3 mins. later, it starts again. And so on.
It's completely unplayable in the time it slows down.
I'm getting freaking desperate to solve this problem, and I've tried so much. Driver, patches and tweaks. Just don't work.
I know the game is badly optimized for the PC, but this is just wrong. There must be a fix for this.
Anyway, thanks in advance - hope you people can help me.
Extremely annoying periodic slowdown/lag

That is a very common problem for all laptops, especially those with low end video {you have what can charitably be considered a "borderline" video device, not as bad as an onboard chip, but not a Gaming card (Medium)}.

I'm fairly sure I never added your card, although there a couple of older model bordeline parts included (I think -- it's been awhile since I refreshed my aging memory about what I put in to expand NTK's list, and what I left out!) .

Yeah, I know it ain't the best card in the history-books, but I usually don't play much on my laptop anyway; that's what I've bought my PS3 for
But as I said - the game runs smoothly and playable first 5 mins. Then slowdown for 20 secs, and the smooth again. For me, it just do not seem like the Graphic-card, more like the processor or overheating.
I was hoping for it was the games badly optimization , and there was some way to fix it

Unlike a 4350, your video card isn't "bad", it's just not quite "good enough".
You have to keep laptops COOL or they slow down to protect themselves. Get a cooling tray for it to sit on, and a can of compressed air to clear all vents from any dust, lint, and accumulated dirt. Also, reduce rhe screen resolution to make things easier on the system.

Ok, now I've looked into it, and it definantly seems that it is an over-heating problem. Just try to see this chart: http://img341.images...navngivetmz.jpg
You can see how it peaks, (which must be where it slows down/lag), then down with temperature (smooth running).
And it's getting pretty hot too.
Anyway, thank you for your help. I'll try to see if i can get it cooled down, but right now I'll just have to live with it.

As I say, screen resolution has the greatest impact on system demand (number of pixels being handled, less = better for a lower-powered system).

Intel E8400
Radeon 5770 1GB
6GB Ram
Windows 7 64 bit
Res 1650*1080, all high settings
I have exactly the same problem as the OP, but no way is my system underpowered for this game. I ran ME2 on this system at the same level and it ran v. smoothly throughout, barely any slowdowns.
Might this be an issue with installing ME after ME2?

I found out some more about (my version of) this problem. I have two monitors so while running the game on one monitor I have Task manager and GPU Z running on the other. When the game is running normally, CPU is at around 90% - 99%, GPU load 70% to 100% (High but everything is running OK). When the slowdown occurs CPU hits a flat 100%, but the GPU load DROPS TO ZERO even when rendering 3D scenes. This explains why everything is so slow as basically the CPU has taken over rendering.
The pattern repeats itself every few minutes - at the end of the slowdown the CPU load suddenly drops and GPU load picks up again. GPU temperature is a mere 44 degrees during all this so this is not an overheating issue.

Hmm. Maybe try shutting off your second desktop while playing? Not an ideal solution, but I wonder if there's something wonky with the dual-monitor set-up.
Alternately, have you tried switching to the processes tab to see what the breakdown is when it hits 100%? Maybe you have a background task grabbing CPU away from ME at intervals.

Kloreep - excellent suggestion. Turns out it was Kapersky anti virus butting in every so often. I have now enabled game mode and set MassEffect as a trusted application in Kapersky. This has reduced the interuptions, but still getting some interuption every 10/15 minutes. Maybe a different Anti virus required ...
