I am in tears.  I begged, asked nice, posted my system and nothing.  Now it is broken and I can not play at all.

The game emits a high pitched squeal that will not stop.  I downloaded the lastest drivers and did everything anyone recommended but no luck.  Desperate I reloaded the game.  I still get the squeal but now everything is gone.  All my dlc and everything.  I HATE YOU!

Please, please someone help me.  How do I get that damn 1.03 patch and awakenings off my computer so I can have my old working game back? I need step by step instructions. please.

When you say reloaded, you mean reinstalled?

Re-downloading the DLC shouldn't be an issue, assuming you're on broadband. They're still tied to your login.

I uninstalled dragon age and reinstalled it. It did not help. I am still getting the high pitched squeal.

I give up.  I am going to bed now so I won't put awakenings in the garbage disposal.  It will probably just break that too.Posted Image

I can not reload my DLC.  Since my computer just starts with the squeal.  Thanks alot Bioware!.  That is two birthday presents you ruined.

High pitched squeal? Are you sure it's the game? Could be a component in your system on its last legs (maybe your video card fan).

Yeah agreed with Eurypterid. I know this patch / expansion is crap but I have never heard of it actually harming anyone's computer other than loss / corruption of data. A high pitched squeal as far as I know has to do with hardware....usually with not getting proper power supply. Could you please give us a full list of what hardware you have currently installed in your PC? If you answer by saying oh my computer? It's the blue one. I'll just forget I even asked.

It starts up with the squeal? Like, when you turn it on?  Or when Windows loads? Either way, though, that ain't the game's fault.  It's just a coincidence that this started after you installed Awakening.

The only way it'd be the game's fault is if the system was nice and quiet, you started the game, and then it began squealing.  And if that were the case, closing the game or restarting after doing so would make the noise go away.  Unless somehow the game is magically running the moment you turn it on, you've got a hardware problem.

As mentioned above, it could be one of the fans in the case.  Or, if it's coming from the speakers (you weren't very specific on this point), it's the speakers themselves, one of the speaker cables, or the sound card/onboard chip itself.

One outside possibility is that it's gotten stuck in some bugged out state and restarting isn't properly resetting the hardware.  If so, then completely powering off the computer and then powering it back on could clear it up (and to be really sure, power down and then unplug it for a few seconds before turning it back on).

Again though, this only applies if the noise is being emitted by the speakers, and not  from within the case somewhere.  Oh, and as far as removing Awakening/patch 1.03 goes?  If you fully uninstalled DA, then you took Awakening and the patch with it. So, again: they're almost certainly not the issue here.

I apologize I was tired and upset last night.  I posted this originally in the crashes thread with my specs.  My computer is brand new.  When I start the game and it gets to the menu (screen with battle scene and load options) the computer begins whining.

This started only after I installed patch 1.03 and at first it would only happen during special effects graphics during a battle (magic cast or a bomb).  I would turn my screen off and back on and it would go away.  Sometimes I would have to scroll out before turning the screen off to make it work.  I had stopped playing for a while waiting for a fix.

Last night I started playing and was doing warden's keep when it started during a battle and never stopped no matter what.  That was when out of frustration I uninstalled from awakenings disk and reinstalled from DA:O.  It is still doing it as I described at the top.  My system is as follows

Processor:  Intel core i7
clock speed 2785 mkz
Display adapter:  ATI Radeon HD 5700 series
Sound Adapter: speakers  Realtek High Def Audio
Driver Version 6.0.1.5953
Operating system:  Microsoft win 7 64 home prem
Direct x version: X11
physical Memory : 7.96 GB
Vram: 1GB

Please I do not know how to remove the patch.

Do you have another new(ish) game you can try? Does it happen with other games or graphics-intensive applications? This really seems like a hardware issue to me. I'd have a look at your video card. Make sure it's seated properly and has all the proper power connections properly seated as well. Double check the squeal: is it coming from the speakers or the machine itself? Do you still hear it if you disable the sound?

Okay I think I found it. I unplugged everything, opened the computer up and reset it all. As I was plugging in I noticed my surge protector converted to battery backup once everything was plugged in and game booted. It sits directly behind the computer.

It did it on another game that draws alot of power when I tried it. It was overloading the outlet. The whine was because it could not draw enough power. Once I reload everything I will try again. Cross your fingers. If this was the cause, then BIOWARE I'LL OWE YOU AN APOLOGY.

Just out of curiosity.. You say your pc is new, but is your monitor new as well? Some older CRT monitors (old 'tv style' screens, as opposed to the new flat screens such as LCD or Plasma) will put out a high pitched squeal when they are getting ready to go out. Highly graphical sequences, such as using the Fireball Spell or when a bomb or booby-trap explodes, will make an older monitor that's on its last leg start making that god-awful squeal. I know because I just got rid of one for that very reason lol.. Next time it does that turn off the monitor for a second and see if it stops.

Whatever caused it, you can not dispel the abnormality in which DA may have caused it since it has become so unstable after 1.03.

The fact that it converted to battery backup is disturbing.  You may have a bad power supply.  This will sometimes happen and if it is a new computer the folks you bought it from should make good on any defects.  Also there is a fan in the power supply and it might be making the noise if the power is bad it can put a lot of load on the fan.
When you turn your computer off does the power supply also turn off or does it have a seperate switch?
I'm hoping it might be something simple.
Occasionally I will get a CD/DVD disk that is slightly out of round or something and will cause the CD player to whine.
Keep posting.  I would like to see what it is or if you cured the problem (obviously I'm hoping for the latter).
Thanks.

Not related, especially, but remember although the pc may be new, the Drivers may not be the latest versions.

Phenomenal.

having run out of software issues, Dragon Age now apparently destroys hardware. What next one wonders?

Ancient plagues, meteor strikes, floods and earthquakes?

My TV doesn't work and I have a friend who brought his laptop round and it had DAO on it and afterwards my TV didn't work and now my car's run out of petrol Bioware I hate you11111!!!!!11!!1!11!!1!

Yeah, it's possible, but it's not exactly easy (barring the use of, say, explosives or disabling the various layers of surge protection during a thunderstorm) or simply a matter of typing in "some commands".  For one, it helps if your OS normally allows you to mess directly with hardware.  Most don't, and those that do still require a fair amount of knowledge before you could attempt it. And it's also more difficult with modern hardware, which is much more tolerant than older stuff was.  Especially displays, which actually were fairly easy to fry at one point, but even so, most CRTs made in the last couple decades have had circuitry in place that simply shuts it down if you try to operate outside its frequency ranges.

IOW, the incidence of this kind of thing is rare enough that it's not really worth considering, nor is it of much help.

Tornadoes in the US are nothing new.. We get them every year near where I live LOL.. But this seems to be more of a hardware problem rather than software.. I've never seen a game cause hardware issues on any PC. Since the OP seems to be MIA at the moment, we may never know if the problem was solved or if the culprit of the issue has been identified.. Oh, well..

I owe Bioware an apology. Thank all of you for the help, but it seems the culprit was my electrical outlet. It went bad and was messing with my surge protector that was located behind the computer. The high pitch whine was battery power kicking in and out as the power flow was fluctuating.

I am so embarrassed that I jumped to such a wrong conclusion. The timing of it and my personal lack of knowledge when it comes to computers is really my only defense. I apologize.

You might want to change your original post and title to reflect your conclusion...just saying.
