Has anyone gotten Dobly Digital to work over an SPDIF connection to an external receiver with the spearkers connected to the receiver in Dragon Age?  It works for everything else ... but not Dragon Age.  For some reason Dragon Age thinks I only have two speakers (since the speakers are not connected to the computer it can't determine how many I have).  It really sucks to have to play it in Dolby Pro-logic with the system I have.  I believe I have checked every possible setting in the control panel, and in Dragon Age ... there just doesn't seem to be a way to get it working.  So if anyone has gotten it to work with that configuration please let me know.

I have the same problem. After extensive searching, I think I know why its happening. For reference, my system is running W7 64bit and Realtek HD audio.

Windows 7 allows each program in the system to take exclusive control of the audio device. Presumably, this is so you don't have go change global settings, for example, each time you switch from skyping (mic on, echo suppression) to playing music on the stereo speakers (Mic off, custom EQ) to watching a movie with spdif (Mic Off, speakers off, spdif) surround output to your home theater.

So, you might notice that Realtek HD Audio Manager does not give you the option of switching to 5.1 surround even if you set the default device to Digital Output. Yet, playing a DVD in WMP using spdif output works fine. It works in VLC too, if you set the audio options within. This is because these programs take control of the audio device and tell it to do 5.1 surround.

The problem is Dragon Age does not take exclusive control of the audio device, but instead relies on global settings to tell it what to do.

The solution is either (1) find a way to set global settings to 5.1 surround, or (2) BioWare releases a patch that allows you to set the audio settings specifically for Dragon Age.

So Bioware, please, even if you don't fix it for DAO, get DA2 in line with the way W7 is designed, and include an option to force 5.1 surround.

I plan on checking out AC3Filter, and RealTek's SoundBack app, to see if
they can work around the lack of audio options in DAO. I'll let you
know if it works.

SOLVED:

Neither ac3filter nor 3dSoundBack did anything useful. But I installed the Vista 64 drivers for my system which included Dolby Live. This gave me True 5.1 surround int DAO, but then my mic didn't work. I reinstalled the W7 drivers and they left Dolby Live alone. Now everything works, and I have true Dolby 5.1 surround in DAO.

Apparently all you really need to do is install Dolby Live.

Note: when I set the default audio device to Digital Output and turn on Dolby Live, when I open up the configure panel in DAO and click on the Sound section under System is says "Speakers_Unknown" next to "Speaker Configuration:"

Well, Dolby Live is supported by specific audio cards, correct? This workaround then is a limitations and only applicable on certain cases.

Anyhow, I also experience the same issue. My machine is based on a ASUS Maximus III Formula mobo with VIA audio driver and the mobo comes with a dedicated Creative sound card Supreme FX. I'm running Win7 64bit.

I noticed the following: Inside the sound preferences Windows 7 offer to run some tests. You can also specify what your A/V receiver can accept as incoming signals. I selected both DLS and Dolby Digital and in either test attempt I can see my A/V switching to the corresponding processing. So the driver works fine within Windows and the collaboration with my A/V receiver looks fine.

But when I run the game, no Dolby Digital signal is fed from the coaxial connection. So it seems for some reason the game is not collaborating with the VIA driver or the Creative card. I do have sound but no DD or DTS as if only basic functionality is present.

The same applies also as mentioned over another forum with people experiencing issues with the wheel button on mice that work inside Windows but not inside the game for zooming in/out.

What version of the Realtek Driver did you use?  I am also using a Realtek codec and still haven't gotten any games to work over spdif with dolby digital.  I can't find any old vista realtek drivers on the web ... a number would help greatly.

Thanks
