I know I'm late to the party but I am planning on buying a laptop in the summer and wanted to be able to use my 360 controller for ME2.  I own ME2 for 360 and have tried to find an emulator so that I could just use my 360 version on my laptop but haven't been able to, at least not one that I think is legal.

For all of you who own the game for PC have you seen an option or submenu that would suggest whether or not it is supported?

And please, for the love of God, I don't care if you think M/K is superior so don't say it.  It is all a matter of personal preference and I prefer the controller, alright?

Controllers aren't supported for ME2. I have a Logitech controller that works using Xpadder, though (www.xpadder.com) Just set it up, then map the keys as necessary. That's just a USB plugin, but Microsoft says you can use your 360 with a PC (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906347)

I've heard Xpadder is difficult to use.  Is it, or do some people not know how to mess with settings?  I mean, if all it is is change this button to do this function then I can deal with that.  One other question though, using Xpadder, how does gameplay differ from on the 360?  Do you just navigate the menu at the bottom that I've seen with the controller, lacking a pause in gameplay?  How is it different?

It doesn't have any good tutorials, at least not that I found.  There is a forum, but mostly I just played with it.  If you can import an image of your gamepad, that's helpful (search the forums for one).  Click on the picture of the gamepad in the top left, select "new", then select d-Pad, slider buttons, etc, and the check the enable button.  Then it will tell you to wiggle the control, which calibrates it. Then click on the desired key on the picture of the typewriter keyboard (like W for left stick forward).  The mouse settings are over on the right side.  Once you've set all directions for the joystick/dpad, drag the picture of the button/d-pad/etc to where it would it be on your controller.

Once you've done that, just save.  When you start up Mass Effect 2, go to options and set the key bindings as you like.

I can't compare to the 360, because I've never played with that.  But I set the right stick up to be the mouse input, and you just move the cursor around with that.  The gameplay is the same as with M/K, it's just a different input device.  As an aside, you may want to play with mouse sensitivity (options>inputs), as the right stick is pretty twitchy on medium.

Hi GuardianAngel470
As  SuperMedbh  says  Mass Effect 2 does not supported Controllers, but you can use the xbox 360 controller  just go to this link on this forum http://social.bioware.com/forum/Mass-Effect/Mass-Effect-2-PC-Technical-Support-Spoilers-Warning/Mod-Gamepad-360-beta-works-need-help-for-vibrations-1375781-1.html
I use this and it works great the only problem is on the  Powerwheel and WeaponWheel the icons are not  visible as in the 360 version, but it plays like the 360.

I  played  mass effect 1 on the xbox 360  and I got mass effect 2 on the pc and I was the same as you I wanted to use  my 360 controller, I used Xpadder but I did not like it but I find this mod  and it works.

So just download the xbox 360 controller driver at
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=Gaming&type=Gaming
Install this driver and plug in you usb 360 pad and you pc will recognise your pad.
Go to this link At the top of this post  and download Second
Coalesced_MaxFuel=1500_and_MaxProbes=60 .rar
Copy this file to the mass effect 2 folder in programs files on your local Disk.
Go to Program Files\\ Mass Effect 2\\BioGame\\Config\\PC\\Cooked\\
This file will replace a file called Coalesced.
If you do this right it will work like xbox  360 ,but the rumble will not work.

I hope this helps

Ok, so if the icons aren't visible, how do you select powers and weapons? Is is just a pause in gameplay in which you can use the keyboard and mouse to select things or what? I wouldn't mind this much as I wouldn't be very far from the computer, it would be a leaning-forward movement rather than a get-up-and-walk-over movement.  Like saving in Crysis.

And do I need software like Xpadder in order to play it or does the patch just enable controller support, as if it supported it all along?

You could buy the Microsoft wireless plug in adapter which connects the controller to the pc I'm sure it would work with pc games.

I have that plug in but the problem is ME2 doesn't support the controller.  I already use my controller for Crysis and Crysis Warhead and it works great.

@Arbiter

That won't make any difference. ME2 doesn't support controllers, officially. It doesn't matter if they are wired, wireless or from other firms than Microsoft.

Officially, there's no support for the Xbox 360 controllers but someone here was working on a little program that allows for the use of that controller. However, from what I saw in a "preview", there's a lot that needed to be worked on.

Hi GuardianAngel470

We all know Mass Effect2  does not support xbox 360 pads Officially as everybody as said.
But just download the file Coalesced_MaxFuel=1500_and_MaxProbes=60 .rar  from the link in my other post.
You do not need any other software like Xpadder, just the file in that rar you download, I use it and it works fine ,but no visible icons and no rumble.

You select powers and weapons like the 360 version, you hold down the left shoulder button for weapons and  the right shoulder powers then the game will pause and then you select them with your left joystick.
As there are no icons on the Power wheel and Weapon Wheel ,you  see what you select  by the text underneath  the space were the icon was displayed.
Believe me it works just like you are playing on your 360.

Hi Kcirttap

If you did the steps in one of my posts above it should work, but post some details of what you have done and then I see if I can help?

Well I followed the steps to the letter...so I thought. The download appears as an unrecognized .rar file and when I replace the existing Coalescd file the game fails to start. The Coalescd file appears as a configuration file...not sure if that is the issue or not. I don't believe the problem is necessarily with my controller since I have been using the wireless xbox controller with games like Crysis and COD WAW with no problem.

Hi kcirttap

It should work with your  wireless xbox controller as  I am using a wired xbox 360 controller so that’s not the problem because they use the same driver, you can do one of three things:

1.  Try downloading the file Coalesced_MaxFuel=1500_and_MaxProbes=60 .rar again Then  extract  the rar file then copy the file called Coalesced to Program Files\\ Mass Effect 2\\BioGame\\Config\\\\PC\\Cooked\\,
If all is well it should work  .

2. Did you back up your original Coalesced file, if  you did then copy that back and see if mass effect starts up. If mass effect 2 starts up then try downloading the file Coalesced_MaxFuel=1500_and_MaxProbes=60 .rar again Then  extract the  rar  file then copy the file called Coalesced to Program Files\\ Mass Effect 2\\BioGame\\Config\\PC\\Cooked\\,

If all is well it should work

3. If you did not back up the original Coalesced file, you have to reinstall Mass effect 2 but this time back up the original Coalesced file, then extract the  rar  file then copy the file called Coalesced to Program Files\\Mass Effect 2\\BioGame\\Config\\PC\\Cooked\\,

But if you do  the first step I say it should work?

Bioware should  have put in xbox 360 pad support in first place maybe mass effect 3?

I hope this works for you

Thank-you, I was not aware of the need to extract the file. That makes sense as to why it was not a recognized file or working. I knew that I was missing a step. Just didn't know which one. It works just fine now. Not sure that I like it better than the keyboard and mouse though.

Hi kcirttap

No problem I am glad to help, well personally I like the joypad for mass effect 2 over the the keyboard and mouse as I played mass effect 1 on the xbox 360.
If you want to use the the keyboard and mouse  again you got to  put the original Coalesced file back were it came from, just to let you know.

Well I hope you enjoy mass effect 2.

Very good guide uk21 ^^

thanks!

I also played Mass Effect 1 with xbox and I think the xbox controller is the best to play mass effect

why they did not put support for the controllers? it's a shame!

it's a great game but for this it lacks of something.

thanks to uk21 I have found the answer quicky on how use the controller.

but this works only for the xbox controller i thinks...not for all the others...unfortunatly.

ok, i have to buy the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver per Windows and set it up as you wrote if i want to play at best Mass Effect 2 ...

ok , thanks ^^

ciao ^^

Hi karuikuma

I  am sorry for the slow replay, but you are welcome for the guide.
You can get the file Coalesced_MaxFuel=1500_and_MaxProbes=60 .rar here www.sendspace.com/file/2w2c47
I have tried the link  and it still works and yes this will only work for  the xbox 360 pad.

I hope this helps

Hi Mr.bigtime

I looked  around for  the file you are after, but with no luck.
But I used this file in the past and it is not as good as the solution for mass effect 2,when you play the game the screen just keeps spinning around, plus you got to use the mouse to select  some things in the game.

So you could change the  ini file yourself but with mass effect 1 you are best to use something like xpadder and map the keys to your joypad ,but it is a bit of a pain.

Sorry I could not be more help.:crying:
