Is
Jacob an only child or are you given the impression that he is? He comes
across as someone who's had to maintain a very responsible and mature
outlook at all times. Reminds me of the people I've known who have had
to help raise their siblings, which strikes me as a good possibility
given how Jacob describes his father.

Jacob is an only child.
He tells you when you ask if he has anyone else.

I must've
missed that dialogue, when does he says that?

It's part of the romance when Shepard asks Jacob if he has anyone waiting for him.

Must've skipped that part, well I'm going to bed thread's your Colonel (but don't promote anyone:P)-_-

What does Bioware have against families? Do they want to make it easier for you to put everyone in harm's way if you know that person doesn't have much family to miss them? That actually might be their reasoning now that I think about it; I know one of the reasons people choose to save Ashley is that she has her four sisters she's so close to.

Think making Jacob an only child was another missed opportunity.

Pacifien, I didn't even pay much attention to it until you mentioned it. Ashley is basically the only character with siblings. Wrex has Wreav but while they are broodbrothers they are hardly friends.

Just thought about something when playing my Renegade female Shepard. At least Jacob asks how you are feeling. For all they did wrong with that romance, at least he asks about you. Chambers maybe the official counselor but everyone seems to think Shepard is ships counselor. It was nice for someone to ask how Shepard was doing.

Sometimes I think other squadmates forget that Shepard can be vulnerable. Garrus and Tali saw Shepard take on a Reaper and win. Miranda learned all she could about Shepard's various achievements, not to mention she and the Illusive Man both felt Shepard's role was vital for humanity's survival. Shepard has to break through Jack's barriers first, not giving Jack much time to think about whatever barriers he might have put up.

But Shepard doesn't need to break through very many barriers with Jacob. Soon as he sees that he doesn't have to play the Cerberus distrust game with her, things are good. And he doesn't set Shepard on a pedestal or see her as indestructable. He saw with his own eyes how very dead she was. He's also saved the Council and been tossed by the wayside as they tried to hide the details of what happened. They can look at each other as very much equals.

I agree with both of you, Jacob has the most in common with Shepard. S/he does not have to break down any barriers with Jacob. They can both find comfort with each other because there past's are so similar.

Also I didn't pay much attention to the lack of family.

Why do you think the developers felt that only Garrus, Miranda, and Jacob were qualified to take leader roles during the suicide mission? Garrus and Jacob have military experience, so I thought maybe they thought that military training gave them some understanding of how to control the battlefield and direct fellow soldiers. But Miranda has no military experience. In fact, I've been given the impression she either worked her missions alone or ruled with an iron fist.

I'm not entirely convinced that military training equates to a good leader. You've got your grunts, your political savvy, and then you have the soldiers other soldiers want to follow.

When I learned that Jacob could be used as a leader, I decided to try him out. I got Miranda's snark on how she hoped Jacob was ready for command. There really isn't much leading up to it, though, about how Jacob feels he's ready to be a leader but hasn't been given the opportunity. Would have liked to have seen that particular character point explored in more detail. Perhaps frustration with the corsairs that he couldn't get the job done his way, followed by frustration that Cerberus goes through the trouble of recruiting him, only to put him into a support role such as head of security for the Lazarus Project. He's never been given an opportunity by others to step out and show people what he's capable of, not until you pick him as the fire team leader. But like I said, no build up to that decision.

I haven't played Galaxy, so I don't know if its touched on during that game. Really wish it wasn't tied to an iPhone.

AGREED.
It feels like they were half-way done writing Jacob's character, and then they ran out of time and just filled in all of the loose ends. No family other than his father and no old spec-op mission that he could of told you about. Just Jacob comes across as an awesome dude who has your back, but you really don't know much about him.

You get a little more info when you romance him but it does seem like that he may have been unfinished.

I don't know....

I really should set aside my extreme distaste of Shepard's tone in the romance so I can get into more information about Jacob. I also get the impression it's one of the better ways to get into Shepard's head as well. Aside from maybe some talk with Joker and Kelly, not many other dialogues turn it around and become a discussion about Shepard.

Really, I just hate how I had to romance everyone just to get to know them a little better. I want Bioware to turn the tables a little bit, have a dialogue sequence where friendship gets you further in learning about the two characters than romance would. Guess you get that with Mordin. But honestly, most of my playthroughs would have probably had a single Shepard if I had been able to get to know the characters just as well without romance.

I can understand that. My biggest hurdle, however, is voice. But I don't want to start that tired battle about the two voice actors. I simply can get into the character more with one voice while the other has me constantly aware that I'm trying to ignore the voice in order to play the game.

Think that has always been an argument against adding more detail to the main character of an RPG. Get some hardcore D&D player talking about how their personal character looks and sounds precisely how they want whereas a computer RPG is going to put some limitation on your customization. Oh, how I raged when I learned one CRPG was going from allowing you to pick either gender in their series to only playing a male with their next game. But the company that made that game is dead now.

Yeah, having to romance people go get them to talk to you is really lame.  Wish they would bring back the ME1 style.  Could get to know all the LI's w/o banging them.  The romances also had better flow and were woven into the story better.

Yeah outside of planet scanning, which is much better after the patch, that was my number one pet peeve.

I want to know more about jacob, what he gives us is kind of vague. And i want to spill some drinks on the citadel damn it!

It would be like a social experiment, have shepard (me), jacob, and garrus drunk out of our minds on omega or the citadel and see where we end up in the morning.

Yeah it would have been really nice if you could actually spill drinks with Jacob on the Citadel after the suicide mission.

*Wakes up in room full on manequins with JT and Garrus leaning on me*
"Uh, guys, wake up"
"What, Shepard?"
"What happened last night?"

Though, i'm kind of scared about the aftermath. Especially with the non-human crew.
