I think Jacob is necessary because he's the only person in the group (not including regular Normandy crew) who seems like he's got his head on straight. He has issues, just like everyone else, but he never makes them anyone else's problem unless they come to him about it. He's rock-solid and dependable, and respects authority but isn't naive enough to accept it without question.

I see. His feature is basically that he is 100% normal, even in spite of his share of daddy issues. Like, he is the guy who, when you don't see him, shakes his head and says to himself: "How did I manage to get stuck in this freak show? Take Shepard for example... Damn you, TIM!"

I concur. It adds the flip side to his "OK-guy" personality.

I've already decided to revive him in my canon, as I learnt that he could tell FemShep to bugger off, if she tryed to play Miranda on him.

So, cheers!

Out of the many, many times I've played ME2, I have yet to choose Miranda as a squad leader during the suicide mission. I can't bring myself to do it.  I choose Jacob for the first leadership role and Garrus (or Jacob)  for the second.

Miranda: " Good luck Taylor, I hope your ready for command . "

She's such an ass. I think Jacob is the best leader because of his personality in comparison to the other 2. He's the least reckless of the 3. Garrus is a good leader but a bit hot headed (more than Jacob for sure). Miranda is reckless and her past combat experience is still a mystery to me. Her bad advice during the suicide mission is obvious .

Miranda: (In reference to the biotic bubble) "I can do it too. In theory any biotic can handle it"

If Samara or Jack volunteer, there is no reason for a lesser biotic to do it or even suggest doing it. She'll put others at risk just to gain attention. Bad leader IMO, even if the game developers didn't think so.

Did Miranda and Jacob sleep together or have a romantic relationship a long time ago, or what? That was the impression I got from his comment "she deserves a better man than I" and also her, "I always keep my promises" in reference to his personal mission. I wondered if she is so condescending to him because he was her former lover.

It is implied at the end of Mass Effect: Galaxy that Jacob and Miranda sleep together.  The depth of their relationship is not known.

Jacob:"So what are drinking this week guys?"

Grunt:"Ryncol!"

Shepard:"Some how I knew you'd say that."

Jacob:"What about that green stuff? It really put you on your ass Commander."

Shepard:"I wouldn't say that Jacob. It was the Ryncol that did me in."

Grunt:"Which is why we should skip the green stuff and Batarian Ale."

Jacob:"You always want to go straight to the good stuff, huh Grunt."

Legion:"Shepard-Commander, I do not understand why organics would intentionally lower their efficiency"

Shepard:"Just think of it as a 'repair protocol' Legion."

Legion:"All 1183 programs on this platform have reached total consensus. Analysis of all available data indicate that alcohol inhibits the cognative function of organics. Zero programs on this platform conclude that your statement is correct."

Jacob:"What does your data tell you about the efficiency of an over stressed crew?"

Legion:"393 programs agree that a temporary reduction in ability would be worth the subsequent improved efficiency, 696 programs think rest would be the appropriate action. 84 programs remain undecided."

Jacob:"I had to ask..."

Grunt:"Too much talking not enough Ryncol."

Jacob:"I'm with Grunt, lets walk inside already."

Turian Bartender:"If isn't my favorite two humans....and krogan. Did you hear the latest rumors? Apparrently the Protheans and Collectors may be one in the same."

Jacob:"When did you start doing small talk?"

Shepard:"First time I came in here, you told me you were a bartender not Emily Wong"

Grunt:"Give me dozen ryncols."

Turian Bartender:"I got tired of you humans asking me What's the latest?

Grunt: *clears throat*

Turian Bartender:"Dozen ryncols coming up. Let me know if you guys need anything else."

Grunt:"Wait, you mean the rest of you aren't drinking?"

@BaByUziiReV

Actually Jacob is in the game for the same reason as Miranda, they were both in ME:G and Bioware had said those characters would be in ME2. They served the purpose of showing both sides of Cerberus. Miranda is representative of Cerberus' "the ends justify the means" mentality. Jacob shows that the other side. That good people join Cerberus out of frustration with inaction by the Systems Alliance. This theme is also shown by Gabby and Ken.

@Festi

Thanks Festi, I try to reference things in the game as much as possible. It helps give it a similar feel.

@Fancando

Hmm....never made that comparison, but it's a good one. Jacob is cool and deadly in a fight. He even has few cheezy blaxploitation dialog lines to boot. :wizard:

@Alexine

Yeah Grunt wants his Ryncol and he wants it now dammit  :lol:  I have a few ideas. I try not to make the convos carry on too long. So I'll see what I can come up with. I think you all may like how Grunt gets back to the Normandy.

Jacob:"Well...this is difrent"

Shepard:"Now we gedda make funna Grunt."

Legion:"Analysis indicted Grunt was ingesting alcohol faster than his rate of cellular regeneration. Attempted to inform Grunt of our findings."

Jacob:"I takit it didn't go well"

Legion:"Grunt threatened to punch another hole into this mobile platform's torso. Could not risk further reduction in structural integrity."

Shepard:"Are yoos ever gonna fex dat hole."

Legion:"Creator Tali Zorah is constructing a new torso for this mobile platform from your spare armor pieces, Shepard-Commander."

Miranda:"What is this dire emergency that you need my help with Jacob?"

Jacob:"Yer always braggin bout yer biotics."

Miranda:"Really Jacob, you are supposed to be the one crew member I don't have to reprimand. Not only did you let the Shepard get drunk but you are intoxicated as well."

Shepard: "I shood go.." *thud*

Miranda:*sighs*

Legion:"Shepard-Commander is no longer ambulatory. Overseer Lawson."

Miranda:"I can see that Legion. Overseer?"

Legion:"When cross referencing your domineering personality with you position as second in command, this title seemed correct. All 1183 programs on this platform deemed this title approriate. Initiating link up with EDI to verify results of analysis."

EDI:"My analysis indicates your conclusion is correct Legion. Taskmaster would also be an accurate assessment."

Miranda:"EDI this is no time for your jokes."

EDI:"That was not a joke Ms. Lawson."

Jacob:"ahaha even Legin and EDI think you ar ova bearin."

Miranda:"Laugh it Jacob. Anyway, why did you call me here? Three drunken crew members is a travesty not an emergency."

Jacob:"We need u ta carry Grunt."

Miranda:"WHAT!? Isn't that why you dragged Legion along on this little excursion."

Legion:"The gravitational forces of the current enviorment along with this platform's compromised structural integrity would make that action inadvisable. Proceeding to the Normandy with Grunt's additional weight would result in total structural collapse. "

Miranda:"So much for Geth efficiency. It's been over two years Legion. When exactly are you going to repair yourself?"

Legion:"Creator Tali Zorah is constructing a new torso for this mobile platform from Shepard-Commander's spare armor pieces."

Jacob:"haha, u just sed that like five minats ago."

Miranda:"Ugh. Fine. What a waste of my biotics and my time."

Legion:"Shepard-Commander's mass and weight within this unit's limits."

Miranda:"What about you Jacob? Can you make it on your own."

Jacob:"Yea, and I win da bet. Jacub Taylah last man standin!"

Kasumi:"You sure you don't need a hand Jacob."

Miranda:"Kasumi!? *sighs* How did we manage to stop the Collectors..."

I'm not black, but I think that if I was I'd be frustrated that every time there was a black character in a show or game that people would assume he was the "token".  As a white female (Italian) I find him attractive and have as much appreciation for black male good looks as I do for white male good looks.

@RPGmom28

Well, I am black and I'm just glad Jacob wasn't a caricature. I was worried he'd end up like Cole Train from Gears of War. Thankfully I was wrong.

Side note: Dwarven Warden for the win. I know it's off topic but the Harrowmount/Bhelen decision is my least favorite in Origins.

Thanks, Darc. My canon warden was a noble dwarf warrior, but I lost her when my old hard drive died. Thought I'd replace her with a rogue this time around. And you're right about the caricature in so many things- seems like in a lot of games and movies, the black person is either a dancer or a comedian.

@Gash

I've done a few fan fics here and there over the years. I did a few chapters for Street Fighter when I was a teenager. I did a few stories for my Everquest 2 characters when I used to play that MMO. I liked the RP servers. Before I created a character, I'd map out a rough overview of their background and slowly fill in the blanks based on the games lore, character interactions, and/or in game events. Not sure I'd be capable of undertaking one for ME2. It
would be a huge undertaking and even if I were capable. It would have to be outside of the events of the main story. I'd hate to write up a bunch of stuff that gets immediately nullified by ME3.

@Festi

Yeah "I should go" is Shepard's get out jail free card. I always wondered what would happen if Shepard threw that line out there during the ME1 Love Interest spat.

Ashley: "We need to talk Shepard!"

Liara:"Yes there seems to be some...confusion here, Shepard."

Shepard:"I knew this would happen."

Ashley:"You think you can sweet talk me and have your little blue friend on the side"

Liara:"If there is a relationship between you and Ms. Williams, I would understand."

Shepard:"I can't just have both of you?"

Liara & Ashley:"WHAT!"

Shepard:"I should go"

Ashley:"Wait...what just happened?"

Liara:"I do not know. Well, I was supposed to meet Shepard for lunch."

Ashley:"I guess I'll pencil myself in for dinner then."

Kaidan:"Wait...that worked. You said the exact same thing last week."

Shepard:"Works every time Alenko."

Kaidan:"You think you could teach me how..."

Shepard:"I should go."

I do it too, all my charcters have their background filled in and I have a rough story set up...
I also prefer to us AU's, it's more fun to write, like that Halo/ME crossover fic I'm now writing (with JT of course, he has his own squad of Marines), no crappy human hating Alliance anymore! :wizard:

And about that convo...
I should go.

Alternate universes are always fun. It gives you a bit of free reign on over the story. Although, I do like working within the restraints of a defined story. Trying to create stories around pre-defined characters can be challenging but rewarding at the same time.

I wish "I should go" worked in real life. It's like a verbal easy button. No matter what the situation, you could just say those three magic words.

Anyway I'm gonna put out an APB on Alexine. If Veetor is right, the Collectors may have gotten her. Somebody call Super Jacob in to investigate.

EDIT: Anyone else getting formatting issues. I'll type a post with one
space in between a paragraph but when I post it ends up being several
spaces between each paragraphs.

My pardons, I've been so busy in the strategy forum I've been neglecting this page. One thing I was surprised about was how little biotics played a role in Jacob's character. Wouldn't mind see the writers expand on that as well.

@ Darc

Super Jacob solves all problems... unfortunately he isn't very good at finding people... however! he can materialize a bunch of cake and I'm sure that will lure Alexine back.... also probably a lot of Varren and Krogan.... Krogan love cake... but life is a mixed bag anyway.

Also, about JT's biotics... it seems like there are so many biotics on the crew in ME 2 bioware just decided to gloss over JT once people like Jack and Samara were around. I think they should have expanded on it as well... since you know... the good stuff and what not... but it seems their priorities lie elsewhere. Thane also has biotics which doesn't really get talked about but he has that whole mysterious assassin thing going for him. More biotic focus would help Jacob to stand out more even though he is the stable guy but like I said... there seem to have been other priorities...
