At least he has biotics in ME2. His tech skills didn't make the transition from Galaxy to ME2.

Would you say the same thing if you didn't like Miranda?  Just as race isn't a terribly important aspect of Miranda's character as she exists in the context of the Mass Effect univerise, I don't see Jacob's race as all that important in that same context.  Obviously we do not live in the culturally advanced universe of the late 2100's that Bioware has envisioned.  Race is still very much a prominent topic in our world.  A Black video game character is noteworthy, while a White one is more common.  And racism is everywhere.  It's often not extremely overt racism, but rather systemic and sadly too subtle for those in the dominant culture to notice without a bit of effort.

Are you serious lazuli? You are the reason he said it. He knew that someone would try and twist his words and make something out of nothing. I have seen many people called racists for disliking Jacob and seen several threads dedicated to making that assumption.

Who is the more racist, the guy who says he isn't or the one who assumes he is? I say that most people who call others racists are racist themselves. Racism isn't a one way street, all sides have prejudices and as soon as those prejudices start ignoring contradictions they become racism.

Every black I've ever know that calls me a ****** is a racist. Every black who immediately assumes that I am racist and ignores everything I say to the contrary is a racist. Same goes for all other ethnicities. 

And for the record, I have no problem with Jacob, I'm a member of the original Jacob Taylor support group, but I do find his romance hilarious and a bit too stereotypical. Hell, maybe even a bit racist, given the contradiction with the rest of his character.

He brought ire on himself by saying it. Whenever someone says I'm not _____ but, it draws more attention to their opinion. Just say you don't like ______, say why, and move on. Then we can continue to have discussion on the pros and cons of the subject, in this case Jacob. People have popped in this thread before and said they didn't like Jacob, I haven't see anyone in this thread accuse them of being racist.



This isn't one those threads on this forums that bring up the topic so there was no need for a qualifying statement. I avoided any thread involving Jacob by title that seemed to imply race as reason for his portrayal. Now can we please banish this particular topic from the thread. I'm sick of the topic of race, I unfortunately have to deal with it real life, and I prefer to avoid the topic in one of my favorite forum threads if possible.

I wasn't accusing him of racism.  I was just highlighting the differences between our world's perception of race and the Mass Effect universe's perception.  I'll drop it, though, for Darc's sake.  If you'd care to PM me about it, I will certainly continue this conversation in that way.

Not to fan the flames but when someone goes "I Dislike Such and Such, but I'm totally not a racist" completely unprovoked, they're intentionally bringing race into the discussion.

It would probably involve his distrust of mercencaries. How about this? Jacob was involved with a mercenary. They got really close. She betrayed him and it caused the death of his squad.

I liked the Corsair's idea. Jacob mentions getting labeled as a "Trouble Maker" early in the game so I could imagine him disobeying orders at one time because of conflicting morals, which ended up with him being in hot water with the Alliance.
