Possibly somthing that they were "allowed" to do, as other actions may have had red tape, but because it was allowed it might have made it much worse. Like he was a willing participant and no one cared in the situation but it was ok, when morally it wasn't.

I am curious about what everyone in here likes about Jacob.
- His voice acting is great, even though he gets some bad lines.
- He doesn't open up easily.
- Shepard can make him mad if she tries to psycho-analyze him.
- He is very effective in combat, especially with recent DLC (Firepower + Lair of the Shadowbroker re-spec).
- His romance gets better on subsequent playthroughs.
- He's an underdog on these forums for many reasons.

He is the only character who does not have a character arc. Don't you feel that's unfair?

But how do you feel about the fact that you can't really talk to him as a person, informally? How do you feel about how he'll never really let you in?

You can talk to him as a person, or at least he offers just as much as any other character in ME2 in that department. He has a friendship style dialog that you can access while female, contrary to popular belief. And I don't feel that "he'll never really let [me] in." People master their emotions in different ways. I don't need to see Jacob blubbering or pounding his fist dramatically into the table (not that I have anything against Thane) to understand him.
As for character arcs, dynamic characters are overrated. It seems largely assumed that for a character to be effective, that character must undergo change. Yet sometimes a static character makes more sense for a given situation than a dynamic character.
I do feel that Jacob was treated unfairly, though perhaps not by Bioware. He has a terrible reputation on these forums and people slide in jabs at him in the most bizarre places. You could be discussing the benefits of one shotgun over another and find diatribes against Jacob interspersed throughout. There's a lot of "Come on, it's just Jacob" talk as well. Don't ask me to dig any up, please. I'd bet you've seen it.

I'll admit, it would've been nice to hear some more about his past, but in all honest I can find just as many flaws in other characters as I can in Jacob.

edit: And his skill-set is pretty sub-par compared to everyone else. Except for maybe Jack.

Jacob actually owns with the firepower pack. I know I've said this several times in this thread, but Jacob+Inferno Ammo+Geth Pulse Shotgun+M5 Phalanx+Heavy Barrier= WIN

Jacob pulls and Garrus, pops them.
He is very hard to kill though with Barrier, and has the same amount of staying power from Grunt or Legion almost.

I do wish he would open up more but I hardly blame him for it. I think that has more to do with the writers and limited dialog in ME2 which honestly bothered me for all of the characters. Especially Jack... that was a real let down for me as Femshep.
I have to say my biggest problem with Jacob is the design... his waist looks to small to me in his default outfit.... but that not a huge issue when it comes down to it. Maybe he isn't a cool alien but he is a cool guy which is more than I can say for Kaiden at this point.... (I'm still mad about the whole epic change of character backstabbing thing.... :<)
Honestly though... when it comes to opening up... there are other characters who really seem pretty closed off too. Jacob is just up front and honest about what he does and doesn't want to talk about and is very clear about it. I know Jacob stops talking to me because he doesn't want to talk... Garrus (as much as I love him) stops talking to me because.... I'm assuming.... he just doesn't want to talk to me... I mean... how long can you calibrate for anyway...

Lately I've been trying JT with Improved Barrier instead. There isn't a huge difference between them strength wise. With all the upgrades, his improved barrier was still in the 600 strength range and it last much longer. Good for keeping that biotic glow during cut scenes.

Through my multiple playthroughs I've discovered that Garrus and Tali are the squadmates who talk to you the least if you don't pursue their romance. Three conversations a piece and 2/3 of them are dedicated to their respective Recruitment & Loyalty missions.
But I digress, I agree with lazuli's early point about Jacob being a good example of a static character. Unlike ME1, I felt the flow of character development was pretty shaky for a lot of the other romances. Jack pulls a total 180 in character in-between cutscenes, Shep is ready to jump Thane's bones after he was just talking about his dead wife, Tali's is completely about how they'll touch and have sex.
Personally, I found all the ME2 romances to be rather shallow, so I have to scratch my head on why only Jacob's gets so much crap.

I completely agree with your first statement.
As for his skill-set, I used to agree with you. I've seen the light, though. I rank him right after Miranda now, at least on Insanity.

Festi, I also noticed Jacob's waist looking very tiny. It makes me wonder if there was a measurement in his character mesh that was just a little off. Zaeed is also a male human and doesn't seem to have the same waist/torso ratio issues.
It's the black and white used in his outfit. Black is especially slimming when contrasted with a bright color on the interior. Jacob's outfit features black on his sides and then white closer to the center of his body. I don't think his proportions are any less realistic than Miranda's, though that's not saying much.

I also found that his suits makes his shoulders larger. Jacob's got big shoulders.
And to a previous topic, I never thought of Jacob similar to Garrus in ME1. I never liked Garrus in ME1, since he was too hot-headed and to a lesser extent "whiny" (People thought Kaidan was whiny, but Garrus was much worse). Jacob's more of a level-headed ME1 Garrus who's already gone through what path he has to go.
